My grandfather was a B58 test pilot for Convair(later he also flew the F111) and remembered when Jimmy Stewart actually got a ride in one. He always wanted to go supersonic so the agreement was that he'd do the film, they'd sit him in the back, take him up over Arkansas and break the barrier. He never flew it. He(my grandfather) was also a friend of John Denver's father (Col Dutchendorf) who was an Air Force test pilot for the Hustler program. My Dad was in high school the same time as John Denver but went to rival schools there in Ft Worth. I still have pins, tie tacks and manuals all related to the Hustler. Even a cool old J79 tie tac! My father always said that although the Hustler was loud(they lived south of Carswell which is the direction they usually took off in) the B36 was the loudest he remembers. He said the 6 props snapping would rumble the house then the 4 jets would just add to it!

Cool memories of you Pop and his time with the Hustler, and great keepsakes to boot. Yes, I know that General Stewart took his flight in the DSO's compartment, but I put him up front to match the film. Thankx for watching, and if you use facebook, come join us at the B-58 Hustler Modelers Association group page.

hankx Bob! I've had this kit in my stash for a long time waiting until I felt I had the skill to do it up right, as the original plan was to cover the entire thing in foil, and that would have been a daunting task. Alclad was an option, but seemed to delicate for my world, but when A-K released their Xtreme metal line, I felt the time had come. Even with the XM paint, I went through half a dozen models testing and learning before I felt ready to put down the finish on such a large model. I'm happy with results, while not perfect, it's lightyears over foil. I'm not sure yet about the scheme on the P-47 yet, but I do like the boxart.

Ahoy Bob I can say it in one word SUPERBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB Very nice I love to get one of these kits like the real machine apposed to the Monogram kit short lived. The metal work is superb I built a old Revell box scale of the B-58 I covered it with kitchen foil and added panel work using Archers Hobby World liquid plate the worlds first bare metalizer paints and then SNJ. Great vieeo the beginning of the video was very enjoyable Jimmy Stewart was a fine /gentleman a great actor I loved his aviation movies like the Strategic air command spirit of St louis a great B-24 pilot The video is Superb through out. great video. love seeing the F104 model too. The 104 is one of the best looking planes ever made. the B58 also. Those 50s jets look so futuristic compared to 1st gen jets.

had a 1/72 kit as a kid, not sure of make but all three cockpits opened as i recall. always wondered how the nose gear retracted with the pod underneath.
@BobBuesking4 жыл бұрын
There are several brands that make the smaller Hustler kits. The nose gear folds in half to fit around the po on the real aircraft.

Made two attempts at assembling and metalizing this particular model from Monogram. It's somewhat easy to assemble but given the extreme demands of bare metal paints the slightest fit problems are pretty hideous. Very few people have actually completed this model properly. You are one of the very few who have and finished it well. One of the toughest kits to complete and have it compete in an IPMS contest. Your model is IPMS regional contest grade. It's too bad that during the demise of Monogram the molds for this kit were lost. I highly doubt any other model kit manufacturer will remake this kit
@BobBuesking Жыл бұрын
Thankx! I practiced on three or four smaller kits F-86, MiG -15, and such to get the feel of the A-K Xtreme Metals paint. Getting everything perfect does take time and the better you get the black base, the better the metal will be. AFAIK, The tooling went to Revell Germany after the merger with Monogram, but hoping they will retool the kit to modern standards. If you use facebook, I'd like to invite you to join the B-58 Hustler Modelers Association. facebook.com/groups/b58hustlermodelersassociation
