Bennett Wilson The song is called "Ces gens-là" which means "those people" (but like it can be perceived as pejorative) It’s basically about a typical french/belgian (maybe even european) poor family during the 20th century In the first part of the song, each verse is about a different member of the family, from the eldest son who’s alcoholic and so can’t work to the grandmother who is "vibrating" and everyone want her to die bc she has all the money, but "surprisingly is still alive", describing what each of the members are going through The first chorus is “Faut vous dire, Monsieur Que chez ces gens la On ne vit pas Monsieur On ne vit pas, On triche" Which can be translated by : “I have to tell you Mister With those people We dont live Mister We dont live, We cheat" The others chorus keep the same rythm but the verbes at the end change ("We dont talk Mister, we count" , "We don’t think Mister, We pray")

The second part of the song is about a girl called Frida which is the love of the narrator (the narrator is a part of the family described in the first part), they love each other and want to live together, have a house and a family. "Others" dont want him to live with her, telling him she is too pretty for him, (I think Jacques Brel meant that they aren’t on the same social class) The narrator say that Frida say with blurry eyes that she is always okay to follow him everywhere if he decides to leave The song end with the narrator saying that he always believe her for an instant (probably dreaming of them leaving everything behind them, fleeing poverty and the narrator’s poor family) but "Only for an instant because with these people, Mister, You can’t go Mister, You can’t go And because it’s late, I have to come back home" Hope it help, the choreo is really amazing bc it portrays every single details of the lyrics (mimicking the dad drinking soup) and all and it gives so much emotions, just like the song Some of it are just my personal interpretation tho, It might be wrong (and my english isn’t that good either) so feel free to ask if you have any other questions

And in such an accurate manner.. Bravo, I'm impressed ! As a French native, I will add that my understanding of the lyrics is that Frida is actually part of the family that Brel describes in the first verses.. and that the "others" are simply Frida's family, telling the narrator that he's not good enough for her The final lyrics : "On ne s'en va pas / You can't go / One does not leave" would be the narrator suggesting that her family will never let Frida leave (or might have even taken a radical action about it), and being so desperate about it that he felt the need to tell this to a random stranger (this "Monsieur"), his only perspective is to just come back to his own home and go on with that sad life of his The choreography chosen by the performers in the video seem to suggest this interpretation, since Frida is the one being kept back
