海灣戰爭期間，美軍等部隊的特種部隊乘坐輕巧的小型快速車輛，靈活的馳騁在中東沙漠之中。
執行諸多偵察、救援、通信等任務。
此後，這一被統稱為突擊車的快速車輛發展進入高速階段。
美國陸戰隊USMC 2月正式購買了144輛全地型UTV。
UTV是一種越野能力靈活的輕型全地形越野車，現已投入到伊拉克、阿富汗等地使用。
有助於提高戰備效率，實現戰地條件中人員物資的快速轉移。
UTV採用輕巧的框架結構，重量輕、體積小、機動好、暴露特徵小，在稍微遠的距離上就無法聽到它的發動機響聲。
採用引擎後置、四輪驅動設定，獨立避震懸掛，框架式車身，不設置門窗，非常容易進出。
通過前低後高的佈局，增強了視野範圍，改善了抗扭曲能力，懸掛、車架、上部框架構成了完整的受力整體，使得在保證強度的基礎上能夠明顯降低重量。車尾的動力艙容納了發動機、變速箱、離合等等設備，上部空間形成了一個載貨平台。
非常輕巧，因此能夠輕鬆的裝入V-22魚鷹傾轉旋翼機和CH-53E超級種馬直升機內部，落地後可以迅速開出機艙，直接空投戰鬥。
它的長度只有3.7M，美國陸戰隊認為，它將被作為陸戰隊士兵的現代“馬匹”使用，從而實現更大的負重和機動能力。
它能運載四名士兵，或用於裝載近七百公斤的貨物。並設置了多個武器支撐點、攜帶設備，從而提供步槍、機槍、榴彈發射器等火力。
比如安裝小口徑班用機槍，或輕型榴彈發射器。頂部能夠安裝重機槍、榴彈發射器、火箭筒、單兵反坦克導彈等等。
美國陸戰隊認為，現在已經服役超過了30多年的悍馬車，個體太大，配備的裝甲過於厚重，導致機動性很差，反而使得車輛常常陷入敵方伏擊火力之中，無法快速脫離。
新的UTV將成為有效的補充，在需要高速靈活機動的場合，特別有優勢。而且悍馬只能使用大型直升機進行吊運，而UTV可以由大型直升機內部轉載，或者由黑鷹這樣的中型直升機吊運，機動能力更為出色。
目前的一大缺點是沒有裝甲保護，也不太可能增加沉重的裝甲，所以美軍將藉助其高度的機動靈活性，實施快速穿插，彌補這一缺陷。
但需要有效防護的作戰任務，仍將交由防護更好的戰車進行實施，而UTV則負責提供偵察或者火力支援。

CERTIFIED AIR-TRANSPORTABILITY
To be as expeditionary as the warfighters that use them, MRZR vehicles are designed for easy air-transport. Engineered with a roll cage that folds on the hood without tools and air-craft tie down points connected to the frame, it has been certified for internal air transport in a V-22, H-53 and H-47. MRZRs have also been proven for sling load or air drop thanks to their ultra-light vehicle weight and design.
MISSION VERSATILITY
Off-road mobility means nothing if you can’t easily carry mission critical gear. The MRZR not only transports the operator through challenging terrain, but the cargo as well. The warfighters can quickly configure their MRZR for various missions with these key features:
