Asian Music Night 2022, which took place on March 12 at Willard Straight Hall Memorial Room, was the second Asian Music Night hosted by CEME and the first one after the pandemic. We were honored to have 13 groups with over 180 performers showcasing their talents across the three sessions. There were performances that spotlight cultures from China, Korea, the Philippines, India, Japan, as well as showcasing Asian American identities. CEME also performed four small ensemble pieces at the event, featuring both traditional and modern Chinese music with a combination of Chinese and Western instruments.
The third performance, brought by our Bayan accordion player, Boao Dong, and pianist, Veya, Zhao, was called 贝加尔湖畔 (Bei Jia Er Hu Pan), Lake Baikal. The piece was composed by Chinese artist 李健 (Jian Li). We included Bayan accordion in our ensemble because the instrument has the same ancestry as the Chinese free-reed wind instrument 笙 (Sheng), and thus the two instruments also have similar tones.
