I am a 79 yo white woman. I was blessed with people in my life and life experiences that allowed me to be given such an open view of humanity. I came to CA in 1950 from a farm in MN with my parents and grandparents. My parents and I moved into a home my grandfather bought years ago in Compton CA. I was the only white child in my class and one of a handful of white children in the school. I had my first best friend and my Mom later told me I was mad at my Mom for not being able to give me braids like my best friend. After I spent my year in kindergarten my father found a permanent job as a blue collar worker and we moved to be closer to his job. When I turned a few years older my Mom and I were talking and it was only then that I learned that I was not of the same race as all my schoolmates in kindergarten. To this day I can picture myself playing and running on the playground and my friend and I walking home together with my Mom but I still don’t see that our skin was a different color from each other. Tell me racism is not taught to kids!

Enjoyed your childhood reflections. I too had a best friend & many school aged friends who did not look like me. We never knew what racism was & we didn't care to know. I remember one bus ride home, when a little boy said to me, "i'm gonna marry you." I thought that it was the funniest & the sweetest thing i had ever heard. We spent many after school days together, went to the local skating rink & got into childhood trouble together. (trying my first & last puff smoking in the girl's junior high bathroom. Only to get caught by a male science teacher who smelled cigarette smoke in the hallway). My first experience with racism was around age 13 when a friend said not to call her house, "we'll talk at school because my grandfather's racist". That was my introduction into the ungodly, but real world of racism which entered into the happy & safe world of the 80's we were living in. Racism is taught, or at best, is a learned behavior from being exposed to that type of environment as a child. I'm blessed not have been brought up that way because as an adult, i can respect, accept & stand for, equality for all in the multicultural nation we have here in the US.
