When I heard this song I was transported back to a little cottage in Dorset that I shared with my good friend, Jenny. Oh such good times way back in 1981 to 1984. The smell of Meadowsweet, climbing the iron age fort Maidens Castle at dawn with our employer's 5 dogs, walking through bluebell woods and our mountain of Planxty records that we bought from Collets in London. Such a long time ago but this song brought it all back!

The first half is a memory, a clear vision to a different time and place without to question it. A time spent with good weather, rewarding work, spiritual companionship, and missed friends, a beautiful period of time with a balance of nature and civilization, with no chance of lasting forever. The instrumental part feels like raw emotion of memories that need needs to be released. This song created in memory of something beautiful is very powerful, a great example of how art is a key to our experience as human beings.

Beautiful recording. I am very, very familiar with this tune, but it is amazing to see the people in the audience, and how they were dressed. I would have been nine years old at the time of this performance. I did see him and Paul Brady at the Birchmere (I think?) in Alexandria, Virginia in about 1992, and Andy as a solo performer at the East Ave Tavern in Portland, Oregon in about 1996. He wasn't having a great night, but it was still good. Wonderful music.

Well, the mandolin and bouzouki are relatively recently "borrowed" instruments by Irish music - borrowed from Eastern and Southern Europe. Andy Irvine was one of those who drove this borrowing and he studied the original types of music they were designed to play.

Great music and even better playing. Look, the instrument Andy is playing is a german waldzither or the so called german bouzuki. You can see that there are nine tuning screws on the machine head, but only eigth strings. So the c-string, it´s always a solo string ist missing. Niece to see this great musician playing a waldzither. cheers🤘
