I really like B&W sound. My 706S2 with Marantz PM8006 play incredible😊👌

Got these delivered and setup a few days ago, on Wednesday and have listened to tons of music, mix of 50/50 Vinyl/CD's. None of the criticism I've heard about these speakers in the many reviews I've read and watched on KZbin, including this one, make any sense to me at all. At first, in the showroom, I sort of understood the criticism of them being "forward", being "bright", but in my home, in my living room; those words haven't entered my head once. The words that do is "Sparkle", "Detailed", "Spacious", "Lightning Fast", and the lows are insanely good and tight. In fact, the last thing I listened to was a 10/30/73 grateful dead performance of Dark Star and the bass, which is powerful in this version, was incredibly reproduced. One would think I had a sub woofer hooked up; I don't. The bass was deep, present and extremely well defined and mixed with the rest of the sound stage. On a few recordings, I found some artifacts that sounded bad and took me a while to realize it was the recording and had nothing to do with the speakers at all. They were just revealing everything that was on the source. For example on one song there was this annoying pop like sound and I could of sworn maybe it was a defect of the vinyl, until I realized the drummer was occasionally tapping his snare drum in a manner that sounded terrible. lol After-all, we can't expect our equipment to change what the musicians did . ;-) My musical passion is quite vast with regard to genres. I adore opera, classical (mostly the romantic period like Mahler & Sibelius, etc) though Baroque also moves me; and of course the Blue's, Rock, Folk. No matter what I played, I found the speakers to be incredible and a HUGE HUGE step up from the Thiel 3.5's I was using in every manner. I understand when it comes to electronics, component matching, listening space, all that, can play a roll; so maybe that's a huge part of what's happening here. I use a Mac C-42 preamp to a Mac MC-7200 amp and my living room is; I don't know, maybe something like 20 feet wide by 30 feet long with vaulted wooden ceiling, lots of rugs and fabric curtains. All I know, is this is freakn delicious. One other thing I'd like to mention. I know many feel B&W have a certain sound, and maybe they do; but that said. I am a musician by hobby since I was a kid of 10, now 68. I know what various instruments sound like. Also, as an example, saw the Grateful Dead hundreds of times from 71' to 95' and can only say this. What I hear in terms of instruments and in terms of the Dead (only referencing them because of how many times I've seen them) is exactly perfect to my minds understanding of instruments and voice that I know very well in terms of a reference coming from first person experience. I don't spot any coloration at all.

They sound better than my B&W 706s. Piano is more klangy in a good way. Not bad treble even through my treble shy FR driver speakers. They are semi open cone speakers with a unique acoustic mounting (with an added woofer). I like them better tham my B&Ws cos mine have that open sound and that also extends the treble (being semi open). And along with that is my FR driver mod that also extends the highs. But the mod doesn't incease overall treble intensity, it just extends it higher. I use a small diamond shape piece of normal al foil to make the whizzer. The thin stuff cut to the size of a grain of rice (fat grain) with a hobby knife. And a small cardboard triangle glued vertically inside the voice coil tube. So it's strong and transfers the vibrations with a hard edge to the sound. And the vertical triangle reaches into the voice coil tube, towards the center. It's just a few mm (like 6 or 7 mm) so the diamond shape foil is exactly in the center of the voice coil tube (when it's glued onto the end of the triangle). You have to make triangles and pick out the ones that take the diamond exactly to the center. 7 mm X 5 mm right angle triangle as a guess. It depends on the voice coil diameter. Use PVA and a minute amount done with a toothpick. Tricky but great sound. Except for a cloth dust cap below the vertical triangle (done first) leave the hole open. FR drivers are (inherently) chiffy! Any whizzer any larger than the tiny diamond will increase chiff. We have inough from the main cone and the diamond is too small for chiff and it doesn't drown out the (precious) tizz. The really high stuff like the ride cymbal played softly. Mount the FR drivers like a cm above the speaker hole with longer screws and spacers made from flexi hose. And jam a short bass vent tube down the speaker hole (from strong cardboard). Only about 2" deep though! But it is still essential. Also to extend highs get a 1 mf electrolytic speaker capacitor and a 2 ohm resistor and a 270 ohm resistor all in parallel. The way difference in the ohms somehow causes the highest frequencies to increase. A magic trick! Hear it before you believe it (just with the two resistors as an experiment).

Hello Soundsommelier!! Thank you for these posts... Listening all these speakers I arrived in a conclusion.. The Focal Utopia is the best.. The sound is really natural and looks like that you are in a live show. What do you think about it... B&W 702 signature is good too.. The coust benefit is better... Thank you..
@OSQQ1234 жыл бұрын
I listened to them this afternoon at a dealer. They sound amazing with B&W signature sound, but I couldn't hear a difference in sound compared to 702 S2. If you don't care about the look, you save money by going for the 702 S2. B&W has not been very innovative the last few years

This amp is good but not quite good enough for these speakers, Class A or tube is best for high end B&W, but even with this amp you can tell these 702s offer super resolution.

@@pavelkohout351 really? Haven't heard anyone else say that. Reading the forums and watching reviews, sounds like you need a pretty powerful amp to drive these properly.

@@spikespiegel323 Yes and no, first trust your ears not on forums and sellers. If your amp handle drop into 4 ohms load and handle constantly deliver power and sound is please your ears why spend ridiculous mount of money for amp? Musical Fid. handle BW 702 nicely so why?
