I wonder if the people who designed the B3 had any idea what they were creating. It is THE most iconic organ of all time.
@koshersalaami3 жыл бұрын
Hammond wasn’t even particularly friendly to the market they’d created. They at the time didn’t work on developing a more portable version for rock, which you know would have sold hugely. Instead, companies like Yamaha build portable organs imitating B3’s. It was one of those stupid decisions like Rickenbacker not accepting the Beatles’ offer of an endorsement.

They were mad it wasn't being used for churches as designed and instead for the devil's music. Lol

Naw, I don't think so. From a basic church organ to replace the pipes to revolution of jazz and rock and roll? Not a chance they knew.

In his younger days, Laurens Hammond was a genius aiming for perfection. He tried to sell clocks, but when he didn't sell enough of them, he made great organs.

Steppenwolf was called The Sparrow until sometime late in 1967. I saw this energetic band under both names at the Fillmore Auditorium, the Avalon Ballroom, and Winterland. (actually the band was called The Sparrows, but when they started playing in the San Francisco music halls, the posters around town billed them just as "The Sparrow"). Goldy McJohn was like a beam of clear light. Solid, rhythmic, harmonic.

I was finishing a sound system install at a very time being but yet to be opened funeral home. Got emergency call from the owner of the company doing the install, who also sold them the organ for the chapel. I also worked on piano deliveries. Apparently the speaker for that chapel got placed as a loaner in a church about 2hrs away, and I was there on that delivery. They were almost the same but different finishes so there was a mix up. I was told to immediately take the instal van and retrieve that speaker and be back in time for the owner of the funeral home do a walk through of the place, including the chapel, where there was a big hole where the Leslie speaker was supposed to be and after a few other small mishaps, I ABSOLUTELY had to have that speaker in place by 5:30pm. It was then 1:45. I used the floorboard for cruise control, and hauled royal ass up to that church, worried the old straight six engine in the overloaded van was gonna blow up. Got back at 5:25pm. This was way before cell phones, and I had been told to meet in the chapel and get the speaker in place. So I pushed it through the side doors of the chapel and proudly and loudly announced that I was back with the speaker. There was a funeral service happening and my side entrance put me right at the front of the guests. Ooopsy. Afterwards and for years on some great laughs were had.

Nice Bro! In the 60's in my first rock band I had a Vox Continental Organ, a Wurlitzer electric piano all going thru a Leslie 145 and it had a conversion pedal that you could plug a quarter inch plug into and it then sent the signal to the Leslie. I loved that set up. Wish I still had it. But time marched on and so did technology so changes were made, but I still remember it fondly. These days I no longer tour but use an old KX 88 yamaha MIDI controller (which I love and that's why I dont "upgrade" it) into my DAW which has a myriad of plug ins to choose from, one being a Hammond that is just mind blowing to be software. Also have many electric piano plugs as it were and a ton of software synths. Today's tech is off the charts, but those old machines are treasures!! I admit it's hard to beat sittin' in a room with a real Leslie!
