Mad Cat is because the first contacting target computers couldn't decide if the target was a Marauder or a Catapault so designation would flick between MAD and Cat

Yeah that's the official lore. One thing I couldn't get is that Catapult's short name (prefix or whatever is that) is CPLT, not CAT

Phelan Kells Sensors were flickering between Marauder and Catapult while locking the first Timberwolf in the Initial attack of the Clans. Hence its name MArauDerCATapult. ^^

They called it a mad cat because in lore it was showing up as alternating between marauder (mad) and catapult (cat) on the iff system when first encountered. Mad/cat/mad/cat

AKCHUALLY b33f, you're half right on the origin of the name "Mad Cat". The name came in lore from the targeting computers of IS pilots first seeing it not being able to decide if they were looking at a marauder (MAD) or catapult (CAT). So they called it a mad cat.

I'm sure this was posted before, but here's the real lore on the Timber Wolf. It's called a "Mad Cat" by the Inner Sphere because when first contact was made with the Clans, it was Phelan vs. Vlad and Vlad was piloting a Timberwolf. The Computer of Phelan's Wolfhound couldn't decide if it was a catapult or a Marauder because of the catapult chassis with arms. Kell Hounds called it a Mad Cat and that's how it happened. PS - the Marauder they did in here was actually very close to the original, before BattleTech got sued by Robotech. The new marauder looks horrible, IMO. MW2 had the original Marauder in it and although it looked awesome, the legs were way too long and not enough armor. They were always legged so everyone avoided them like the plague. Not to mention, PPC's traveled slower than molasses in winter uphill in that game.

Mechwarrior is really old.. ( Same with BattleTech and Robotech, Though Robotech is younger.. But each "shared" mechs. ) So I was a bit confused by these being early mech concepts.. Since I do not remember them at all. Unless Mechwarrior Online has its own version of the past separate from all that came before it.

PGI does and did a lot of things wrong, but you have to give it to them for bringing the 3d models up a notch. Some of those lanky marauders from the 80's looked pretty bad, the ones they have in the game now look like the walking tanks they are supposed to be.
