Babbitt Pour 2024 Part Three

I'm bringing you along on my biggest babbitt pour since I left the shipyards back in 1994. The two bearings are from a work boat and supply support for a five-inch propeller shaft, which was re-machined to new custom diameters.
The Babbitt material is ASTM B-23 Grade 1 Babbitt
Melting point solidus 223C 433F
Melting point Liquidus 371C 700F
Pouring temp 441C 825F
Part Three, I got it all figured out and created a good seal on the mandrel rings and have very good results in the lower Bearing shells halves.

It is refreshing to watch you after all these years being so efficient, sure, and precise and in my eyes leaping tall buildings and going faster than locomotives to actually struggle and spaz around. Keith, I noticed the difference between pour 1 and 2. here is an idea. Use a piping bag (like for iceing on a cake) or a ziplock with a small corner cut. This will allow you to pipe the cement into the mold or onto the spacer without touching the surfaces.

Too bad on the Part Two pinhole leak pour. Part Four machining the bore diameter? Good to see the drill press table, I embarrassed myself a month in on my new job by bending the second from the left spindle and walking that end 2 feet from the wall. Drilling a 7/16 waterline in a 7" x 7" x 7" Vega steel cavity block when a chip caught on the second pulley up rpm! The toolmakers on each side quickly abandoned their projects until I could reach the E stop.

Thanks for another fine video, babbitt pouring bearings isn't as easy it initially looks. I was wondering (I know, no good can come of that (:-), but would you ever consider restoring the shells to original diameter (silicone bronze brazing followed with machining). Could that have helped with sealing the leaks and reducing the number of pours?

Great question, but brazing it up and machining would be a lot of extra work, beyond the benefits
