Howard Johnson's and Lum's were WONDERFUL. Interestingly, Milton Berle was a vegetarian.
@muffs55mercury61 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the additions. My uncle and I ate at the Brown Derby in 1984 and of course had no idea it would close the following year (Los Angeles is very bad at preserving it's history!) so I was lucky to see it. On Jan 17, 2023 it was announced that Steak and Ale is reopening with 17 restaurants mostly in the upper Plains states and NE, OK, KS & MO. In Arizona I can think of two seldom mentioned. There was Grandy's that came in the 1980s but never drew huge crowds. Also there was Ozark Fried Chicken that emerged around 1968 but closed their locations a couple of years later. Farrell's was another victim of an investment group who bought them, stole most of the cash and then closed them down. I liked going going there in the 1970s. In 1972 a Farrell's in Sacramento made the national news after a privately owned fighter plane crashed into it after failing to get airborne. 20 patrons were killed.
@crankychris2 Жыл бұрын
the death toll was 23, an elderly couple crossing the street thinking their grandchildren were in farrell's were killed. the f-86 had a fatal flaw, it couldn't rotate more than 5 deg, the pilot over rotated on takeoff, knowing that the runway was too short and stalled. impact speed was 240 kph [150 mph]. one family lost 9 people.
@muffs55mercury61 Жыл бұрын
@@crankychris2 That was very sad. Made the news everywhere. That store should never have been put there but again no one would likely think of a plane failing to get airborne and crashing into the place.

Rio Bravo Fresh Mex in Atlanta in the 90s was a hotspot that went on to expand statewide and was sold to Applebees and then to Chevy's to go nationwide. They took a great concept and ruined it by outsourcing the food, nothing fresh, just frozen, and then putting it in a bag. Best Queso and fresh tortillas and Margaritas ever.

It's been a while since I've had a reason to drive that way, but one of the old Red Barn buildings was still standing on 8 mile Road between Telegraph and Greenfield in Detroit. We used to see it on our way to the State Fair. Assorted independent Resturants occupied the place. We stopped going to the fair after the family friend's we used to meet there retired from thier food booth buisness, so I can't swear that the place is still there.
