The origin of the crisp (also known as potato chip) is attributed to Kitchiner, with The Cook's Oracle 1817 including the earliest known recipe. The book contains what may be one of the earliest references to crisps, in a recipe for "Potatoes fried in Slices or Shavings", which instructs the reader to "peel large potatoes, slice them about a quarter of an inch thick, or cut them in shavings round and round, as you would peel a lemon; dry them well in a clean cloth, and fry them in lard or dripping"(From wikipedia) research is cool, huh?

I think the Kellogg's story is a but untrue. It was the brother who created the company and sold the granola and accidently created corn flakes when trying to salvage a batch of dough for granola. The inventor of the granola wanted nothing to do with commercializing it. Also, Mr. Post was a patient at the place where Kellogg was dispensing the granola. Upon his discharge he took the detailed receipe from the brother's notes and start Post cereal company.

There is a little bit more to the potato chip story. The restaurant was famous for its potatoes au gratin. The customer who was a famous writer didn't like it he said the potatoes were too wet. So the chief made the dish again and again it was sent back. That is where the revenge comes in. Not only did the chief cut the potatoes thin and fried them but it salted them too. It backfired because they were a hit and everyone wanted these Saratoga chips.

So there was another guy next to him selling waffles and then that is where the idea came from. Maybe they are both correct. Ice cream cones have been around since the early 1800's (discovered in a French cookery book)Marchiono didn't invent them. He (in 1903) along with and Italian gentleman from Manchester UK (1902) both patented a Machine that makes icream biscuit containers 👍
@BabbleTop4 жыл бұрын
Edible cones were mentioned in French cooking books as early as 1825, when Julien Archambault described how one could roll a cone from "little waffles". Another printed reference to an edible cone is in Mrs A. B. Marshall's Cookery Book, written in 1888 by Agnes B. Marshall (1855-1905) of England. Her recipe for "Cornet with Cream" said that "the cornets were made with almonds and baked in the oven, not pressed between irons". Edible cones were patented by two entrepreneurs, both Italian, separately in the years 1902 and 1903. Antonio Valvona, an ice cream merchant from Manchester, UK, patented a biscuit cup producing machine in 1902, and in 1903, Italo Marchioni, an Italian ice cream salesman, filed for the patent of a machine which made ice cream containers. At the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904, a Syrian/Lebanese concessionaire named Arnold Fornachou was running an ice cream booth. When he ran short on paper cups, he noticed he was next to a waffle vendor by the name of Ernest Hamwi, who sold Fornachou some of his waffles. Fornachou rolled the waffles into cones to hold the ice cream - and this is believed by some (although there is much dispute) to be the moment where ice-cream cones became mainstream. Abe Doumar and the Doumar family can also claim credit for the ice cream cone. At the age of 16, Doumar began to sell paperweights and other items. One night, he bought a waffle from another vendor transplanted to Norfolk, Virginia from Ghent in Belgium, Leonidas Kestekidès. Doumar proceeded to roll up the waffle and place a scoop of ice cream on top. He then began selling the cones at the St. Louis Exposition. His "cones" were such a success that he designed a four-iron baking machine and had a foundry make it for him. At the Jamestown Exposition in 1907, he and his brothers sold nearly twenty-three thousand cones. After that, Abe bought a semiautomatic 36-iron machine, which produced 20 cones per minute and opened Doumar's Cone's and BBQ In in Norfolk, Virginia, which still operates at the same location over 100 years later. 🍦

George Crum didn't actually invent the potato chip. Recipes written in such books as The Cook’s Oracle (1817) and the Virginia House Wife (1824) both predate this story. (even though I love the story). Having said that however, one could argue that George Crum (also known as George Speck) helped introduce the potato chip to a wider American population through his Saratoga chips. I think he was also the first to start selling them in bags (similar to how peanuts or popcorn would have been packaged at the time). In the history OF the potato chip he's definitely an important figure both as the invention myth and as a connection to black culture in terms of him being able to operate a business and market a product in a time when historically black individuals did not. That part should definitely be respected.

At 12:31 in the video "10 Famous FOODS Discovered By MISTAKE!" states that aspartic acid is "classified' as a neurotoxin. This statement is false. They author of the narration for the video is confusing aspartic acid with NMDA (N-Methyl-d-aspartic acid). Aspartic acid is produced by the human body and is an essential component in the body's ability to make proteins. It's present in every cell in the human body and you can't live without it.
