As we say in the aviation world "Good stuff". Excellent job at reminding us that sometimes if we look back there may be an older concept with a newer slant. Today, that old method seems to be a better and a more simple solution for acquiring multiple internet access points, at multiple locations without having to go wireless. Thank you for providing a newer alternative.

Wow i stumbled upon this video. Never heard of powerline but i think i will try this now. As far as how powerlining works, I'm gonna take an educated guess since i've done electrical work that it's because of the wires in the walls. They are carrying that wired internet throughout the house the same way the ethernet cable is, just on a larger scale. Which is probably why he said it might not work with an apartment because the wires might connect to the next apartment over so technically your neighbor is the one who could use your internet through a wired connection

From what I've been told, the reason why PLC won't work in a lot of apartment buildings or townhouses is that each PLC box must be plugged into an outlet where both outlets are connected to the SAME SIDE circuit breaker of the building's power supply, and that is nearly impossible to determine in an apartment building/townhouse for most people.

Great video. I have the HITRON 3GN3 modem from Rogers and it is on the second floor of a detached house. A ps4 in the basement and on the second floor constantly lags and loses the connection. If I were to by a router and a powerline kit .... would I have to place the router right next to the modem and connect the main powerline to it there or can I move the router elsewhere and bridge it somehow? Not sure what to do. Also, I would need the main powerline that hooks into the router ...and two other powerlines. Can you buy a multi-port powerline by itself? Thanks
@Babblingboolean

The Dude I don't know anything about your modem type, but yes as mentioned the router must be kept with the modem and the main powerline kit must be connected to the router.Some powerline kits come with multiple ports, some don't you'll have to Google search.

I use it in our appartment, as we were not allowed to drill holes in the walls. It is working just fine for basic internet browsing (and basic streaming), but it is terrible for high throughput from one side to the other via the powerline. If you are setting up a server you will constantly access it might not be the best idea. I got lots of disconnects. If you are not running a virtual server with multiple services running you should be OK though. :-)

Great video. I am just contemplating installing my first home network ever, and looking into powerline as an option. I have a question...... Can I plug the "primary" adaptor (downstairs) into my modem Ethernet port and then plug my wireless router (upstairs) into the #2 powerline adaptor? Thanks for the help!
@Babblingboolean

+kaffepojke The power line kit connected to the router is usually considered the primary.
@dragonsfoeva

for those who are asking why the power lining is getting the same or less mbps it's probably because of the power lining kit. If the max mbps on the kit is 100mbps and your internet is more than that the max you can get from it is 100mbps. or say you have a kit that goes to 300mbps on the main end and a kit with 100mbps on the other the max you can get is 100mbps. Also consider the number of people using the internet at the same time, if there are multiple people online at the same time the mbps that you would get goes down. Also take note of what others do on the net as well depending on what they do, the speed will drop either more or less.

Just stumbled on this video. Good job, pretty well explained brother. My only question is, how fast of the speed should i expect. My rogers gives me 300-400 from the wire. Unfortunately im always on wifi and speed is only under 50. I would love to buy one kit for my room if speed can reach the same as on wire.
@staffan144
@staffan144 6 жыл бұрын
okayGK in your own house/apartment, and if u buy good stuff, it will be faster than 50 i think almost garanteed. Good advice: when setting it up, begin with two power outlets close to each other, make sure they connect and everything works the best, then move one of the devices to the next closest power outlet and make sure they connect again and everything works fine, and then move it to the next power outlet and repeat etc etc until you have reached the power outlet u want it to be at. (instead of going directly for the power outlet that u want to install it in, perhaps far away. Doing as i described above helps them to find each other and connect with a better signal when far apart). However it will lose speed when far apart, but when it is in your own house or apartment, my experience is that they r good. When i talk about far apart, i mean, my brother and i share internet connection via powerlines through different apartments in the same building and it works fine (but he gets maybe 30% of my speed). in my own apartment (when testing) maybe 70 percent of the original speed remains.

victor larraondo The powerline kits sends a physical internet signal to other powerline kits connected to the power outlet. There might be ones that send a wireless signal as well but I haven't looked for any and they would be very expensive.

It actually depends. Some powerline adapters run slower than a traditional cat 5e Ethernet cord. In my current setup for example, my wireless speed is just as fast as many older powerline kits, in some cases faster. Wireless technology has come a tremendous way in the last 5 years.

does this constantly use electricity while transferring data?
@staffan144
@staffan144 6 жыл бұрын
Lundo good question. I am not sure i would describe it like that though. Nevertheless, the units r warm and there r light indicators switched on when they are in use and connected, so they definetly use some electricity/power, but probably not very much. Compare it to... for example your regular router. It is switched on, there r light indicators and probably some heat is generated too, while in use, i.e. like constantly. BTW me and my brother shares internet while living in different apartments in a bigger 'house' (or whatever it is called) with many apartments in the building... ('house' in city)

babbling boolean, i have a question that you probably have not received. first of all thanks for the info. the reason i am interested in wired internet is because j am sensitive to EMF's. the reason you are setting up wired internet is different than my reasons so i'm asking you what the solution can be for me. your solution includes lots of wireless devices (the routers, the power kits, etc.) which is what i'm trying to avoid. i want zero wireless around me and only wired internet. i have an upstairs and downstairs so i do not want to drag long ethernet wires all over the house. so what can i do? you mentioned your solution prevents you from having to hire someone to drill holes all over your house. what exactly does that entail? who do i hire and why exactly? thanks a lot!
@Babblingboolean
@Babblingboolean 6 жыл бұрын
Technically you could remove the wireless antennas from many routers, it doesn't turn off the wireless signa completely but it's almost obsolete. In some cases, some routers from the console interface allow you to disable WiFi but I'm not sure if that means disabling access or turning off the signal itself. As for a profession that runs cables through walls, usually electricians do that sort of work.

@Babblingboolean 10 жыл бұрын
Okay to confirm from your last message you average 180kb/s download speed and your internet provider is giving you 1Mbps service? If so this won't help much. Put it this way; with my old service I used to download at 800kbp/s with 10Mbps service, now I get 2.2mbp/s download with 25Mbps service. So the speed your getting is about the cap of your internet anyway, powerline most likely won't help.

You're thinking about it the wrong way, the power can be measured differently in each apartment but at some point the wires could be shared. Imagine a 30 floor apartment building with 10 apartments a floor, I seriously doubt each apartment has individual lines coming from the ground up.
