@EverydayCinematicBirds3 жыл бұрын
@@friendofcoal I’m not sure what type it was… could have been a yellow jacket as well. Only bees leave their stinger. I think it was stung based on its reaction and if you watch closely it does lower it’s abdomen onto the chick. I watched the chicks a lot and they don’t move like that unless there is a significant stimulus.
@EverydayCinematicBirds3 жыл бұрын
@@friendofcoal So I’ve done more research on the subject matter and wasps or yellowjackets do not loose their stinger when they sting. It also seems like they can sting very quickly. I think this chick was indeed stung but very quickly. The reason it is so quick is that a baby chicks skin is practically transparent and very soft. This meant that the stinger didn’t need to go far and was removed immediately when the chick reacted. There wasn’t anything that the stinger would get caught on. Just my thoughts, I’m no wasp expert by any means…

Why put hate one bees and be angry at them when it wasn't even one of them? Yellowjackets and honeybees aren't the same kinds of insects. There are differences between them. Honey bees tend to be a darker yellow and more fuzzy. The wasps are brighter and not as fuzzy, and the reason why the wasp tried to sting the chicks is because they don't just feed on flower nectar like bees, they eat meat too. Once a wasp was pulling the skin from a poor baby bird to eat. Not something honeybees do.

Most of the time bees sting is because they have been provoked. That was a yellowjacket wasp, they feed on meat and will attack baby birds for the flesh. We have carpenter bees in our garden and they are very good bees. Sometimes they will land on me for a few minutes just because they needed a rest and I was a good thing for them to land on, but they never try to sting me. I be kind to them, they are good with me. I even rescued one with an injured wing that was sitting outside in the cold rain.

This yellow jacket desires to feed on the bird. Carnivorous wasps will scavenge or feed on defenseless prey, or the hamburger you're eating. The bird is reacting to having been bitten as the wasp tests his possible food source. The wasp is not threatened by the bird and would have no purpose or reason to sting it.
@EverydayCinematicBirds3 жыл бұрын
Very interesting theory! I honestly didn't realize that wasps bite flesh. It's hard to tell in the video but something (either stinging or biting) is taking place. I've watched a lot of nesting footage from all the nests I've filmed and the chick in this video isn't just reacting to the wasp landing on it. For the chick to move like it does at the end there has to be a significant stimulus.
@theotheseaeagle3 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayCinematicBirds wasps are scavengers by nature, their young are primarily fed on carrion. My cats killed a mouse and a bunch of wasps came and started ripping out chunks of flesh of the mouse carcass and taking it back to the nest for the larvae. The larvae will also eat caterpillars and flies too
@EverydayCinematicBirds3 жыл бұрын

wasps are actually a very aggressive for a reason, because when you get close to their nest, they release a pheromone that smells like bananas, and they go right to the smell of bananas, because they see it as a attack pheromone
@jeffreardon90522 жыл бұрын
When social wasps get injured/killed, they release an attack pheromone. Residue of this pheromone often ends up on the body of the predator animal that killed the wasp, marking it as the "wasp killer." Other wasps can smell the pheromone and will seek its source, and then attack the predator that killed their kin. I wonder if one of the robin parents previously ate a wasp and/or brought it back to the nest, thus contaminating the nest with the attack pheromone, the smell of which prompted the wasp in this video to find the nest and attack the chicks. The chicks (which were still blind) were certainly not the ones antagonizing the wasp nest.
