I don't mind that this has been done before, and it was just the kind of story Pinkie needed as a character.

Speaking as a big sister myself, I think it was a pretty realistic way of showing all the work that goes into taking care of a child, especially if you're not used to it. I also liked how the episode showed not only how bad it is to be too care free, but also too authoritative. Pinkie kind of had to find a place in the middle to work.

A show like this is always going to have certain stock episodes. It's how those stock episodes are handled that's the trick and I like what they did here. I also identify so much with Pinkie's problems as I'm the oldest of four and sometimes babysat for a neighbor family. Taking care of babies can be a bit of a horror story.

What I like about this episode is that it's one of those rare occasions where Pinkie is in here usual happy fantasy world, and then gets a wake up call back to reality. She thinks babies are all play and no work, until she actually has to takes care of them and see's what real responsibility is.

The best part about this episode is the lesson in the end. She says something like "sometimes your desire to help can overcome your actual capabilities." I thought this is one of the BEST lessons, at least to me, because its no newand fresh- not little lessons like how to share or how to care, and its even extremely relevant. The whole episde, i thought Pinkie was learning to be responsible- an old and tired child lesson. But at the end, she surprised me with that lesson. I realized, perhaps Pinkie DID now it was a big responsibility to take care of kids, but she UNDER-ESTIMATED the job... since she's rarely been placed in areas were she had to be responsible, and is mostly placed in situations where she wants to help others have fun and be happy, she didn't realize how much this responsibility differs. She thought if she just kept the foals happy, and she could do that with her regular antics, then she would be fine. She just didn't EXPECT the situation to go so out of hand(..hoof). Keep in mind, she showed this in little things throughout the episode. Most characters would completely ignore that giant list on taking care of the foals, but pinkie read it all. She even acknowledged is length in the beginning with nervousness, but she brushed it off because she thought she could handle it. She showed motherly moments here and there, while keeping to her Pinkie roots.

I believe that episodes like this, episodes that show a character maturing and gaining life experiences are great, but only if they can keep the growth consistant. Unlike currencies and other shenanigans, this is something you simply MUST take into consideration if you want to make a good series. About the twins, I think it's just something they did just to make the caring part all the more overwhelming, and I believe that they made up the unicorns and magic just to make it somewhat sensible. Or the babies are just cursed :P

Arguably my favorite part of the episode was whenever Pinkie tried to set her desire for fun time and her desire in this particular episode to prove her level of responsibility is high enough to justify leaving her alone with a couple of one month olds and even then pumpkin cake bust the lock and starts sucking on her toys like a pacifier while pound cake is zipping around being rambunctious and it actually breaks pinky to the point where she's not afraid to show the twins that even grown ups can sometimes ball their eyes out and then the twins use the one thing they both found funny the whole time their parents were gone to try and cheer Pinkie up and it was super adorable! Long story short my favorite part was Pinkie's emotional breakdown that made the twins think that maybe they pushed her a little too far!

A story like this becomes common because it is a common situation. I don't see that as a problem, as long as it is used to good purpose - namely giving the character a chance to grow in a realistic way. The setup might have been cliche, but Pinkie was the perfect character for this, and she did have a great moment where she really grew as a character. As for how the cakes were able to do what they do, I don't really see a problem. Baby horses can walk within hours of being born. Why wouldn't a baby pegusi be able to fly just as soon? After all, pegusi often live in the clouds, which we see requires an amount of magic to stand on, so a baby pegusi would almost have to be able to fly immediately (at least enough to be supported by the clouds), or else the land under Cloudsdale would be a baby-pegusi graveyard, and their race would go extinct pretty quickly. The unicorn magic is a bit tougher to explain, but for the most part, all we saw her do was levitation. This is something that every unicorn can do, no matter what their specific talent is. So it's likely a very basic and innate form of magic that doesn't require practice to work. Levitation for a unicorn could be as innate as grasping is for a baby human. The only exception is when she leaves the improvised cage by walking through it. It appears that she makes it insubstantial so that she can walk through it, but this could be an animation oversight, and really all she does is push the strings aside. Even if it is some kind of phasing effect, it was just the once, and could be explained by the "magic surge" that they describe.

I kind of thought that the Cake Twins' abilities were holdovers of survival traits from a more primitive and darker time. Similar to human babies able to crawl for a short while to reach the mother's milk and actual horse foals being able to walk and even run within a short period of time and that they disappear after a while once the babies develop more and are better able to keep up with their parents, taking away those potentially disastrous talents from youngsters with volatile emotions. Obviously this isn't the case with horse foals, but with human babies, keeping the ability to crawl all the time might be disastrous if a mother has to put the baby down for a moment to do some task or another. Similarly with the cake twins, once a certain amount of time has passed and they have found safety within the herd, their abilities disappear. Which would be why we don't see the twins doing a whole lot of magic or flying later on when they're featured. Or something. I'm tired and it's late and this is completely off the cuff.

I hate the fact that poundcake can fly so well without any practicing. They could at least show him fail few the first few tries. and finally getting almost at the end. I did read that babies can swin well without failing for the first few tries, but I see this more of a bird first flight not a baby first swim. They could show Pumkin Cake unable to control her magic.

having just had a baby, i can understand Pinkie's dilemma perfectly. you want to have lots of fun with the baby, but then he'll start to scream and cry and distract you from the most simple, basic things like eating. it's a lot of hard work. but then you get that one rewarding moment with the great big "i love you!" smile and it makes it all worthwhile.

I hold a soft spot for Baby Cakes, and I think that's largely because of a parallel experience I had with my niece. The majority if the episode hovers between entertaining to funny, but the ending always gets me. I think by *not* having a letter to Celestia at the end of the episode, it allowed for a less obtrusive lesson and let those that have had similar experiences feel that again and let those that haven't feel it vicariously. I think that's where FiM handles this kind of story much better than most other shows. As for the cake twins, when I first watched it, I took the whole thing at face value -- that is, that they were having "magic surges." At the time, I looked at Pound Cake's wings and noticed they were the same size as Scootaloo's; so I figured that maybe Scootaloo had yet to go through a growth spurt and that she was underdeveloped. I've since questioned that reasoning but haven't come up with a sufficient answer. It's kind of a case of "not enough data available," though I'm wondering if even Rarity's foalhood magic gem-hunting expedition (from her cutie mark backstory) wasn't also a magic surge. Twilight's similar magic surge when hatching spike I can chalk up to her natural talent as much as a magical surge, so I'm not willing to call that evidence for my point.

The reason why this is a common story media, is because it is a common story in life. Being responsible for another life is not easy and requires dedication. What I like about this episode is because for the first time pinkie looks human. Up till now she is best described as “cartoony” but now we see some genuine emotions and even see something we up to then thought was impossible, she looked and sounded tired. And for the first time she is on the receiving end of zaniness.

Even without the surges explanation, a very young baby knows how to swim at an instinctual level as well as other things. However because the bodies grow and they don't constantly use said skills while the body changes they lose this. I'd say the same would be true for Pound Cake at least. Most times he doesn't even fly and eventually his body will be too heavy if he isn't constantly flying since his muscles have not developed as fast.

The adultry joke and Trainspotting reference are the only two jokes in the series that genuinely made me somewhat uncomfortable. The adultry joke didn't bother me as much as the Trainspotting one, though. I mean, the context of the joke was that this guy who was watching a baby was took drugs and the baby died under his care. Later on, he was drugged again and hallucinated that said baby was crawling across the ceiling over his bed, rotated his head to look at him with dead eyes, and came down on top of him. The reference wouldn't have been so disturbing if the episode didn't also feature a scene where Pinkie made a similar mistake to the one that killed the Trainspotting baby.

I can get why the Cake's would be hesitant i would too, but Twilight's explanation for coming over is a bit tactless almost to RD's if she just asked if she needed help then PP would be happy to accept & not saying PP wasn't responsible. But i do like how even though PP knew she was in over her head she was determined one of my all time favorite traits. like i said this was my 1st episode i watched w/ the Mane 6 & rewatching it FS & Rarity seem flandorize. but still 1 of my favorites.

This one is actually one of my least liked episodes. We got the typical babysitting cliches like feeding time, bath time, diaper changing and the kids being (shocker) too much for the sitter to handle. There wasn't really a reason for the twins to be a unicorn and pegasus either. My only guess is because the writers couldn't think of a creative story alone with just earth ponies or it was just so they could throw in a cheating joke for the adults/parents watching. I'm all for seeing Pinkie in some serious moments because she's my favorite and I want to see her grow outside of being silly, but this one was definitely a weaker episode.
@matt004411 жыл бұрын
"There wasn't really a reason for the twins to be a unicorn and pegasus either" Actually... there was. Mr. Cake explains it and apparently, it checks out that genetic traits (in animals) from past generations can skip a few and appear in the current one. It's very complicated.
@Deverer9311 жыл бұрын
matt0044 It's called the Punnett square system; which was exactly what I thought of when I first saw this episode and not the adult 'joke.' I got the idea that like eye color being a possible recessive (dormant) trait that can appear down the line in a family tree, so too can (in this world) the race of ponies. I'll leave off there, since trying to determine what's the dominant and recessive aspects of the race genotyping is something that would take to long to wrap our heads around right here and now. (Note: I've yet to see the video, just saw the comment and wanted to reply while it was in my head).

I have a feeling that all the ponies have magic. Not just unicorns. The reason the unicorns' magic seems more obvious, is because of their horn, which seems to act as a focal point or an outlet for that magic. Similar to a wand. It's possible that pegasi use a type of inborn magic to move and stand on clouds. Possibly even the reason why they can fly is because of this magic. Even earth ponies have their own magic, but it's not on display in the same manner of unicorns or pegasi. Perhaps it's earth pony magic that makes the Apple family such great farmers, and why Pinkie Pie has the 'Pinkie Sense'. It's not surprising they can harness this magic instinctively at a young age. But when a foal becomes older, and develops higher sentience and intelligence, they forget how to use these inborn abilities. Which is why young unicorns must learn how to use magic, and how pegesi must learn how to fly. Although, earth ponies never have to truly learn how to harness their inborn magic, because it doesn't manifest as strongly. It remains buried inside them.

"Pinkie continuing to mature as the series goes on" Last two stories had Pinkie getting lost in dreams and being son inconsiderate she had to be fired by the teachers, only to then randomly scare her friends for no reason without checking as to why since only RD and AJ would have any reason to need the scare tactics applied..... SURE she matured.
@CrittersRule24711 жыл бұрын
Well season 4 is still early and Pinkie really hasn't needed to do anything so she's just been being Pinkie Pie so far - also new writers get a free pass with going nutty with Pinkie their first time - if you want to see how far Pinkie has come in maturity just look at the Polsky arc - need I say more.
@masteroflag11 жыл бұрын
CrittersRule247 you have a point. But considering Polsky so far is the worst writer in the show average wise (the guy who did the latest episode needs at least two more for him to have an average) his Pinkie episodes come off more as only working by making everyone else dumber. it's why too many Pinkie pies while the funniest episode of season 3 was also the worst episode to me outside the premiere. Because despite Pinkie maturing over the course of the episodes AND the clones all having a single mindset that even Pinkie at the start of the series didn't have...they still could not tell who the real Pinkie was and Spike was the only one who had even a educated guess on this. And while I'd give that guy a pass it doesn't really excuse McCarthy from doing it. She seems to think the fact Pinkie's best episode with not issue was "Party of One" and keeps making that version of Pinkie and makes her more and more random as it goes without any place for it.
@CrittersRule24711 жыл бұрын
masteroflag Polsky the worst writer!? Too many Pinkie Pies one of the worst episodes of season 3!? The Chrystal empire THE worst out of season 3!? Ok, this is going to be a long conversation - First off Polsky is by far not the worst writer for the show, Chris Salvo and Charlotte Fullerton have both got two of the worst episodes of MLP each, which equates to Polsky also having two really bad episodes however he is left with four really good episodes while Chris has none and Charlotte has one, so as an average they are worse however even without the statistics Polsky is still a great writer for the show, he is always consistent with how he writes each member of the mane 6 which for the most part is just the same as any other writer but he manages to break Pinkie out by making her as zany as possible while also developing her as a character and making her not only grow but also seem really intelligent, he also without question is one of the funniest writers with one of the greatest knacks for comedic timing so almost all of his jokes work, he even pushes the tension limit with the hydra in Feeling Pinkie keen which I was quite shocked to find was legitimately threatening....which leads to his greatest weakness, he can writes some awesome creature moments and then spoil them with unneeded comic relief, he doesn't seem to know the balance which is why both collaborations with Merriweather Williams, the shows best dramatic writer, didn't work as both went for comedy when it should of been Polsky writing the gags while Merriweather wrote the story however this doesn't make Polsky a bad writer and Too many Pinkie Pies is a prime example of his best work outside of comedy with one of the most original and genius spins on the "clone" genera to ever hit media with the clones literally being character clone of what someone taking the very core stereotype of Pinkie's character archetype and having that be the core basis of the clones - cheap knock offs - not only is that very original and a fantastically subtle toy reference but it also shows just how much Polsky understands the character which even if you think the mane 6 not being able to tell the clones apart from the real Pinkie (which I will defend as from a narrative stand point they are never given a clear sign that the real Pinkie is the real Pinkie just because she looks depressed and the reason people use to attacked this character act is the ultimate solution they use to find the real Pinkie anyway as only the real Pinkie would care about being with her friends more then random gags) -You must admit that Polsky really is a great writer for that amount of perfect character understanding and subtle parody. OK, I will wait to see your reply before I get onto The Chrystal empire (I assume that's the episodes you were referring to as the worst of season 3) which is my favourite of all the season premiers - It would help if you told me what you disliked about it particularly.
@masteroflag11 жыл бұрын
CrittersRule247 I don't count Chris because you need at least 3 for an average to me, hence why I said worst average so Charlotte is saved by her season 1 work. Polsky is very good at the subtitle stuff and keeping up the comedy like you said. My issue is more that he can't stick the landing and season 3 had a real problem with having a decent final act in every episode because McCarthy was new to story editor work. Thus Polsky's biggest issue is made even worse and his episodes become the worst in season 3 as a result. Too Many Pinkie Pies had that issue of her other friends being too dumb in the last act. Spike at your Service I can forgive for being bland because he had to rewrite Williams' script. Keep Calm and Flutter On has a real timing issue with showing why Discord would care and seemed very rushed like they only had 3 minutes on the clock to do the climax that needed 7 at least. And Games Ponies Play does well with Twilight, but the ending is again screwed by being so muddled that it actually becomes worse if you rationalize it.

if true, the following should explain why the cake twins are capable of doing powerful magic the basis for the emotio theory of magic: unicorns have horns which allows them to directly manipulate magic in its basest form (at the cost of concentration and effort). then there are pegasai who use their wings to make magic cause them to fly (which they would be incapable of flying without using it). then there are earth ponies who have been shown to posses no naturally functioning tool with which to manipulate magic. except that in recent developments it has been shown that different emotions evoke different forms of magic. hate and fear have been shown to be a powerful source of energy, as well as friendship and love. and the show has established that of all the ponies in equestria, pinkie pie has the most friends. it only makes sense that she should have access to large amounts of magic. but with no natural tool to shape magic, she has no natural outlet for that potential. yet we see her perform many miraculous and magical feats. knowing this we can come to a reasonable conclusion. just as magic is produced by strong emotions, it is also shaped by them. pinkie pie has no control over her natural abilities and can only use them when her emotions activate them (and maybe even this magic allows her pinkie sense to reach into the future [or the past... take your pick] to warn her friends of impending danger because her strong feelings toward her friends [which is everypony]), making emotions, much like a horn or a pair of wings, a tool for manipulating magic. a good example of this working theory is twilights magical surge during her magic exam. as infants the cake twin's entire being runs on emotions, making them very in touch with their magical abilities. this also means that as they grow up they will lose the ability to fly and cast spells as they rely more on critical thinking to accomplish tasks.

1:50 You might have got this wrong or I misreading it, but Mr. Cake said, that he has a unicorn on his side of the family and Mrs. Cake had a pegasus. If your talking about the combined family of Mr. and Mrs. Cake then that works. 5:30 I don't get why people get mad that the twins can fly and use magic right away. This should have been implied that was going to happen. As for me, I don't really believe in that whole using magic to make pegasus fly. I think there is magic at work, but only to let them walk on clouds and control weather. If you remember we saw little Pound Cake break a bath room faucet and carry Pinkie Pie around. That show's that he has super strength. I think that his super strength is being implemented into his wings, giving him the power to fly. As for Pumpkin Cake, maybe because she has such a small body, she might be able to store up magic really quick and release it in a big burets. Giving in the name magic surge. For the episode, I really like this one. It puts Pinkie Pie in a position that she is not used to and she has to solve it on her own. Also the Cake twins are ultra cute. Nothing is as cute as Pound and Pumpkin. I also like the idea of Ponies of 2 spices being able to make other spices. It's an interesting idea if you ask me.

My biggest problem with this episode is it doesn't portray childbirth realistically as something horrifying. They had a responsibility to do so, and despite it supposedly being a show for kids I know childbirth is far easier for ponies, but the show is still viewed only by humans, not ponies so they still should have shown graphic childbirth her screaming bloody murder as her vagina tears and all. Instead, they just show up from nowhere which was a very irresponsible thing for them to do because they are basically showing childbirth to be something it's not, fun. Encouraging little girls to get pregnant as teenagers. At least they showed how actually taking care of kids is a pain in the ass.

My only real issue with this episode was that at the end of the story, Pinkie becomes their twin's babysitter, even though throughout the entire story she failed to do even the most basic things required to take care of children! Am I the only one who finds it strange that the Cakes would leave their foals in the hooves of Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, and Rarity but not Pinkie? Twilight likely has never taken care of a child (besides Spike) in her life. Fluttershy learned the same lesson in another episode. Rarity's only experience with children is Sweetie Belle. And Rainbow is...Rainbow Dash. AJ I can see, and realistically Pinkie should be only SLIGHTLY worse than Rarity and Twilight, should be EQUAL to Fluttershy, and better than RD. I mean COME ON...the Cakes are practically entrusting strangers to foalsit for them.

DR.Wolf002 I managed to find this on the MLP wiki: mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Pegasi According to Faust: “Unicorns are the only ones that can control [magic] willingly. Pegasi have involuntary magic that allows them to do things like walk on clouds, and Earth Ponies have a magically ingrained connection to the Earth that makes them better at working with plants and animals.”
