I’m Hispanic and making tortillas is a thing we do very often in our household. We also have a tortilla press and we cut circles out a plastic bag and put it on the tortilla press so that the tortillas won’t stick to the press!! Love you Colleen💐💜💜!!!

As a Hispanic myself and growing up in a Hispanic household I learned that the best way to make tortillas with a tortilla press it but cutting out 2 circles or squares out of a plastic bag and using that instead of parchment paper or flour. Hope this helps luv you.

Right!! That's how I learned too. But our family has only ever done it with corn tortillas (masa + water), I wonder if flour tortillas would flatten out as easily with a tortilla press? The thing that u used to flatten out the dough balls is actually something Mexicans made/invented personally we cut two circles of a plastic Walmart bag that are a little bit bigger than the flatner thingy so then u put one of the cicles on the bottom and then u put a ball of dough on top of that then u put the other circle on top of that ball and then u squish it and then u open it and flip the dough on the other side

When you make tortillas like that, the best thing to do is make smaller balls and USE OIL, any type of oil works, just smear it on the top and bottom. Hope that helps😊

We only use that kind of press for corn torts. Flours torts have gluten that makes them stretchy so they need to be rolled out by hand. 😊 Tedious but so worth it! Hope that helps:)

I don’t know if there is a way to press that kind of dough and get a flat tortilla but I’m from Mexico and we use that “pressing machine” it is call PRENSA but we only use it with dough made of corn flour, with this kind of dough we get a nice flat tortilla ready to cook. This activity is so important to our culture and it is very common to find places to eat where you can see how the tortillas that you are about to eat are being made.

I cut the sides of a gallon sized plastic bag to use, so it already had a fold. Then I clean it to reuse it as many times as I can. I also do the first press, rotate 180°, 2nd press, rotate 90°, third press, rotate 180°. Then I've had all 4 'sides' close to the handle, which is where the most pressure is.

Hi collen! I'm from Mexico and when my grandma uses that tortilla thing, she usually cuts in half a plastic bag and puts each half on each side of the thing, she puts the ball and presses it and just separates the plastic from the dough and it usually work's, there's no flour or parchment paper. "The press thingy" as you called it haha, it's normally used for another kind of tortillas (tortillas de maiz), I'm from México and this is a very common kitchen utensil, maybe yours didn't work because of the type of dough, but like Erick said the size of the balls it's also influencing, so that's maybe the reason why it's not working :))

Hi Colleen in my house hold we use a tortilla press often and the way my grama has taught me to not make the dough get stuck is by cutting two circles out of a plastic bag you make them around the same size as the press it’s ok if they’re a little bigger. After that you put one circle on the press then you put your ball of dough and then you add the other circle on top once you do that you press it down and then remove-the dough very gently from the circles ! in my experience w my latina mom lol, she always told us to line the bottom and top with parchment paper or my mom likes to cut out circles from plastic bags but both work fine, but that will help prevent it from sticking and also making it easier to clean!
