These films are simply living proof that jazz drumming was all about the bass drum and snare drum, and even modern Drummers should fully understand that and learn this business first. Cymbals, high hat, cowbells etc. are extras, effects. If your bass drum and snare drum aren’t holding it down, even if it’s not IMPLIED, your stuff in the drums will not swing. Every single drummer on earth owes a bow and huge gratitude to the old guys of this generation and should really understand what’s happening here in these wonderful films.

I made this film with my father Barry, amazing to see its had so many likes. We spent a hot afternoon at Milford's house on Pauger st in New Orleans. He was a kind and gentle man. I remember he was a plasterer/builder by trade and outside his house was a low wall he had built that he had painted pink and then covered in silver glitter. Richard Knowles, my Godfather was present that day too. He shot the Chinee section back in 1962. My father laboured for hours on the Baby Dodds part, trying to get something approaching a sync. I made two other films in the 80's, one on street drummer Cocomo Joe, the other on pianist Sadie Goodson. Both films now property of The Historic New Orleans Collection.I continue to make films for Tulane University, and the Historic New Orleans Collection. If you are interested, both their archives contain many films and recorded interviews on New Orleans music.Many thanks, Emile Martyn

hi Mr. Martyn, thank you so much for this important work preserving New Orleans and American music. I am researching early use of the term "Boogaloo" before the 1960s, did any of the elder NOLA drummers mention a rhythm or a style called "Boogaloo"? A colleague of Earl Palmer mentioned Palmer used a double-time rhythm called Boogaloo in 1957, I am exploring if this was a known rhythm in New Orleans second-line music. Thanks so much! Feel free to email me if you have any guidance or resources on this topic fishsaucefunk@gmail.com

Thank you emile504! You are doing a sacred act for the world, making documentaries to preserve music history. In my humble opinion, all great jazz musicians should have at least one documentary-biography about them. There's plenty of work to do! Gratitude!

Thank you, Mr. Martyn! This whole film is extraordinary. Each of these drummers is a repository of so much history and musical knowledge themselves. The work you do and your family has done to record and preserve them is priceless. The Baby Dodds film in particular takes my breath away. I’ve been knowing his playing for over 40 years but had know idea this kind of footage of him existed. Such a pioneer and master of the instrument. Your father did a great job getting it in sync as well as he did. Thank you again for your wonderful, important work!

I actually watched a video on you tube of Thomas Lang saying the drummer's of the 1920s had sloppy techniques he was referring to Dodds and Arthur Zutty Singleton these modern drummer's of today have no respect for the drummer's that paved the way for all of us..he should've been more respectful...

So-called drummers of today or yesterday, Moon, Baker, Starr, are not drummers, they are phoney skin bangers who do not even deserve the title of drummers. None of them hold the sticks right, in the traditional grip which as any true musician knows is the only grip which offers ease of entry into any musical genre. Can you imagine Starr sitting in with Benny Goodman, or Collins with Harry James? But Gene Krupa would have easily coped with the Beatles, and Sonny Page with Genesis, get yourselves musically educated my friends, it is a long journey, but well worthwhile, I am still learning...

@thomashall9182 4 жыл бұрын
@@RSMGsndchannel A fine drummer, or fine drummers are drummers who play with big bands, read the dots, lead the band and play before people who understand music, all types of music be it tympanists who accompanied Kathleen Ferrier, Jazz drummers who backed the Monk, rock 'n' roll drummers who played with Buddy Holly, they all knew how to play the drums, they all used the traditional grip, which is as Buddy Rich one remarked, the only grip in which access to all the skins is easily available, [Buddy could play a drum roll one handed], if you prefer to see a drunken skinbanger flailing about, good for you, I prefer to see the sticks never more that 12 inches above the skins making more noise and in much better tempo.
