Definitely encouraged by the parent. It's called sibling clutch reduction. When there isn't enough food, the parents will ignore the violence and intentionally feed the aggressor, allowing the aggressor to reduce the number of mouths to feed

They always ignore the violence even in times of good food. They just have a total policy of non-intervention. It is possible as you mentioned that sometimes the behavior is subtly encouraged by the way they handle food delivery although there's some debate.

It is badly hurt. I don’t think it’s gonna make it. Mother nature could be so cruel. It took such a long time for the second egg to hatch. The size difference is so evident. Remember there was one eagle last season that raised three of them but she had lots of fish to feed them. When they were born, so close to each other.

The parents won't kill their own chicks, but when food is scarce they'll depend on the strongest to "clutch reduction" aka reducing the number of mouths to feed. The chick killed will provide food for the killer. Nature is brutal, and too many watching it are in denial, make excuses, or try to silence the reality.

This is simply instinctive avian behavior when there is insufficient food. Fratricide is common among raptors. The two smaller chicks are fed to the oldest, strongest chick. In this way, one chick survives, rather than all three being lost. Sentiment has no place in an eagle's nest.

@@trissloan663 No, on some other nests...like Harriet and M15....M was distracting 17 from beating up on 18 and even a few times using his beak to stop it....17 must be a female because she is a bully and 18 a male is very submissive...Shadow is another male that has gently interceded with his young...so its like humans ...some good parents and some bad. BTW if you noticed Mom was eating while the one eaglet was killing the other...NO lack of food....just a bad parent.

That's interesting. Just like the Cowlitz Osprey nest, the younger chick became the aggressor and ultimately, dominated that nest/feedings this year (2021).. I never fail to learn about BOP every nesting season. I wonder if little dude made it?

Three chicks gives one or two a chance of reaching adulthood. When one dominant/aggressive chick kills his two siblings, there is only one with a chance of reaching adulthood. The animal behavior of the chicks is detrimental to the survival of the species. Don’t give me that “survival of the fittest” nonsense. The two murdered chicks might have been very fit, but just hatched a few days earlier. Meanwhile mom just goes about preparing dinner for three, er two, er one. Just another day in the animal world.

eaglet has to learn to fight for its food and protect its self .if they can’t learn to fight for themselves at this stage, they more than likely not survive within the 1st year . There is always sibling rivalry . As they get older . There is less of it . 3 eaglets is tough to feed so the weakest of the bunch probably won’t survive .

The mother or father of eagle is heartless, they should stop the stronger chick which attacked the weaker. If check the real story, the U.S should not make eagle to be the national bird.
