Elephants are highly communal mammals, just like humans. Not surprised by this display of compassion, they are among the few mammals on earth alongside humans that will intentionally endanger themselves to aid a member of their community and even sometimes animals from outside their community that aren't known predators. It is a bit of a miracle they don't run in terror from humans though considering the fact it is our species that is wiping them off the face of the earth :(
