May 19, 2010 So I found this baby fawn crying off of my porch and when I got close it's mother sprints out of the woods to the rescue.

I've lived in rural areas all my life and seen fawns and deer, but I've never seen anything that incredible before. To actually see a tiny fawn in the wild is rare, but to be able to see Mama come and get it is awesome. Our natural tendency is to want to "rescue" the adorable little things so that we can pet them, but if Mom is there, the natural life's really the best life for them. I loved the way you talked to the baby and the mama, and I found myself "talking" to Mom, too. Great video.

You are very right in that regard, mama will often leave her fawn somewhere safe so it's spots can camouflage it.

The mother often leaves her baby for a whole day or night so she can find food. Her milk is very rich and will keep the baby fed all day. It's completely normal. I suspect this baby was talking/crying because it was frightened of the man, and not in any danger at all.

Oh wow, hunting season must be rough out there. These deer are terrified of humans. Our local deer are skittish of humans, but never that scared. It's fascinating to see the difference in environments, that the deer in a peaceful environment never cry out in the presence of a human (they do not get hunted in their territory) or in general. It's kind of heartbreaking to see such an adorable creature recoil so horribly at the sight of a human, as I'm so used to them sniffing at me and being generally curious, watching them play with our cats and our dog. I've watched them play with the rabbits. I'll go out to cut down the alder tree's growing in my back yard and next thing I know I'm surrounded by deer dining on the freshly fallen foliage with a baby deer waiting patiently for me to fall another one. I've seen them run from dogs, and the mothers go from very peaceful to bloodlusting battering rams (i've seen a deer chase a dog for an hour straight attempting to stomp it to death for trying to attack it's child). Both those deer were really tense, I'm a little surprised the mother wasn't more aggressive and confrontational. They look terrified. Poor things must have a real hard life... thank you for being so sweet to that fawn, but don't be too nice... something tells me those deer wouldn't last long if they trusted humans to any extent.

Looks like momma deer was trying to teach baby deer a lesson on survival by keeping a short distance away, but close enough to respond in a dangerous situation. Maybe she was hoping the little guy would find her on his own. I am so in envy of your house location! I dream of living in such an area far from the big city and bright lights. I imagine your view of the night sky is stunningly beautiful on clear nights. Since moving to the city the beauty of a star filled sky has disappeared.

I live in East Texas and we have a sizeable white tail population. I was driving to work one night on a county highway and noticed a big doe just standing in the road. I slowed then stopped and she bolted to the other side of the highway. I walked back to where she had been standing and there was a week old fawn that had just been hit. Sadly it was beyond my help but I knew that the mother would be next if I didn't get the fawns body off the road. I moved it well off the road and shed a few tears. The mother doe could grieve safely and hopefully live to produce a new fawn.

also people think the fawn is abandoned cause its momma isnt around. well the fawn can't walk very good so momma leaves it in a hiding spot and only comes back to give it milk a few times a day. The fawn doesnt have a very strong scent but mom does so she stays away so she doesnt lead predators (foxes,coyotes,bears,mountain lions, even racoons) So just cause you watch the fawn for hours and momma never shows up it is NOT abandoned, leave it alone
@stringE626 жыл бұрын
Young fawns spend almost their whole day sleeping. I saw one have breakfast, lie down in the same spot, get up to stretch a couple times until Momma came back. It takes them a while to grow into their legs, so they appear wobbly at first.

Us humans always want to help - and rightly too - but the baby was just scared of the man, there wasn't anything else wrong. The mother was fine, she was just feeding nearby and left her baby in a safe spot. That's normal. She ran across the yard to try to distract the guy (who she thought was a predator) away from her baby. If you see a fawn like this, just walk away and leave it alone so the mother can come back.

The primary defense a mother deer employs when their fawn is in danger is to take off running to draw attention away from their baby. She lingered hoping the filmer would chase her and leave the fawn alone. It's already been said but abandoned fawns are almost never abandoned, leave them alone.
