By how responsive these little darlings are to touch, it is clear they must make amazing mothers. It is so great to see little hippo getting so much love. It looks so time consuming and I don't know how you find the time to care for all the babies.

Maggie comes and feeds the babies 3 times a day so that frees me to do the logistics and the rescues and keep everything ticking over. Making up bottles - working out how much they should be having. Doing the washing and washing up, doing the records and weighing and measuring them and doing the vet visits. I know they will have been washed and fed and played with by Maggie.

@@TheSharron When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. They learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.

I had to move her along to another carer around 6 weeks old - she and Sequoia weren't having a good relationship and were displaying a codependent aberrant behaviour we call "sucking". The only way to fix it so both babies can grow up emotionally, is to separate them.

How lovely to revisit Hungry Hippolata, when she was so tiny. Loved the different hairstyles! What a success story she is, and how she thrived and grew strong thanks to her devoted human carers. Many of us remember when Hippo's mum sadly died, and left her baby a tiny, motherless scrap. Meg promised she would look after her lil' bubba for her, and she was certainly true to her word. She did a fantastic job and the optimistically named little Hippo blossomed in the loving care of Meg and Maggie. Hippo's mum would be thrilled to see how well she's done, and how she continues to go from strength to strength in creche. When Hippo is finally released back into the wild to pick up the baton and do all the important things a bat has to do, I like to think her mum will be watching somewhere, with pride. XXX

Do you remember all the wonderful battys you rescued over the years? That’s a lot of sweet memories! 😋
@Megabattie4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think I remember most of them - I remember the babies and can bring up a story about each of them if you give me a name or a location. The adults - sometimes I only rescue them and drop them to a carer immediately - which means I name them but do nothing more than immediate care. I generally remember those - I can drive around Sydney and say pretty much at every suburb or street - I rescued a bat there - I called him X - he was trapped on a balcony or in a courtyard or whatever. there have been thousands now. I rescued a bat this morning... I called him Arturo. I've rescued bats in that street before (it's a long street). I remember rescuing Ding Dong from powerlines in that street. The energy company worker called him Ding Dong. He had a burnt thumb which was dead and was amputated when he was a few weeks old.

@@JoltJackelope Walter was in care with Mandi, and she sends me videos. Walter was a hand raised baby who couldn't be released for some reason (the origins aren't entirely clear since it's been 28 years or so) - and he went to a wildlife park. When he was too old to hang in the display he was assessed by vets and the options were euthanasia or retirement to Mandi. We were all lucky Mandi took him and gave him 10 years of happy retirement till he died about 3 months ago.

Also Banksia was tiny and quite broken, with metabolic bone disease and many broken bones, and there was Mongrel whom the Princess renamed Shoeey (who was in a shoebox called Mongrel Boots). Try those vids to see the smallest of the little ones. Also I think there was one called Cameo who didn't make it either. And Espresso who also didn't make it. Not sure I put that vid up though. He was short and black.
