"What's in this drink" is an expression even I've used. It's an old one that means "alcohol." In other words, the woman in the song is trying to jokingly blame her feeling tipsy on something outside of her control...as in, "Oh, there's alcohol in this alcoholic drink?" The duet was performed by both the composer and his wife anyway.

hold up okay so the movie that this is from the woman’s like in her twenties and she lives w her parents because that’s what they did in the 40s (u didn’t move out until you got married),, “what’s in this drink” was a phrase used to imply that her behaviour was because she’d had a bit to drink (alcohol, nothing creepy)!! the whole song’s just about girl who wants to stay but doesn’t want the neighbours to gossip and has to pretend that she doesn’t want to bc that’s what fitted into what was socially acceptable!! v cute song from the 40s!! nothing creepy happening here!!

You people can be as intolerant as you please but stop ruining things just because you're bored.

@theodorechandra84508 жыл бұрын
AnymousScreams what in this drink? please explain that line
@master17498 жыл бұрын
Theodore Chandra it's probably implying the drink is mixed a bit strong, I don't think there is any harshness to this song
@sarahlaurent22398 жыл бұрын
Theodore Chandra Actually this entire song makes way more sense when viewed from the mindset of someone from the time! Women, even if they actually wanted to were expected to say no to sexual advanced because they weren't allowed sexual agency. The line "what's in this drink?" was actual a common joke, (like asking someone what's good) that everyone knew was a woman making an excuse as to why she had sex with someone. If you look at the lyrics, it's her commenting that there will be talk tomorrow, because she wants everyone to see her as a proper young lady even if she wasn't in the context of the time period. So that was a little wink at the audience, even though now in our era it sounds a little rapey. (To answer Dodie's question as to her age, it wasn't common for women to leave their homes and strike out on their own like it is now, they lived with their families until they were married and then they lived with their husbands.)
@erynnegriffin52197 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's as simple as intent now, people are addressing the implications *now*. It may have been written then, but it's still being sung today. Also, it definitely has a few predatory undertones. (Like the original writing of the song, in which the female was meant to be the "mouse" and the male was meant to be the "wolf". Because that isn't creepy.) Also also, marital rape wasn't considered to be a "thing" until 1995, roughly 50 years later. There were plenty of rapey marriages going on in the 1940's.
@paolagutierrez70447 жыл бұрын
Erynne GriffinI don't see it that way at all. It sounds like a flirtatious banter between two people who clearly want to stay together longer, but the girl is supposed to play coy. If there is any obvious undertones, it's more sexist than rape ones.

At least there will be plenty implied (If you caught pneumonia and died!) I really can't stay (Get over that old out) Baby it's cold Baby it's cold outside Okay fine, just another drink then That took a lot of convincing!
@eykyra8 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's a rapey song I think is just that she's not "supposed" to stay late with a guy because as you said it was a time in history were women weren't allowed to do most things, but she clearly wants to stay, though she's supposed to say "well, I should go".
@eykyra8 жыл бұрын
***** Yes but I didn't understand it so literal I guess. Since later she says something like "breaking this spell" I thought it was more like "I should be more responsible what's happening to me?". The answer may be love or not, we never know, but I guess I chose the first. Even at that age when society wasn't concerned about feminism I don't think singing about taking advantage of drunk/drugged women was seen as very cool, you know :P

I've always been so creeped out by this song but this version makes it not as bad thanks dodie
@silverbroom028 жыл бұрын
Not Josh Dun Agreed! I can't even listen to this song anymore (whether the "rapey" interpretation is the correct one or not... it still perpetuates these ideas as acceptable and romantic). But I love this. It's so pretty I can ignore the lyrics.

Hey this song isn't rapey! Like you said she is playing with the social expectations, like when she says she /ought/ to say no. You were pointing out that she mentions the whole family but yeah she doesn't need to be young to be worrying about that. The infamous line about the drink is because she's joking that that could be used as an excuse. I once saw a really in depth explanation why this song honestly is ok, I can't remember all the reasons but genuinely! Not problematic! Also this version is luuuusssshhh nice work 😍

tips to people trying to play along, transpose frank loesser's version -3, and put a capo on the first fret. also, the solo is in the key of b flat. :)

I think when she says "what's in this drink" it's in a playful flirtatious kinda tone, like she still staying because she wants to although she has to leave.. idk just my opinion :p

If you want to find a problem you'll find a problem. I think this song is sweet. Listen, she's talking about how everyone else will feel about her staying, not about how she feels. I love this song. And LOVE this version.

Also, "what's in the drink" was commonly asked question. Like small talk in the 40's!
