Is Tracing BAD?? (rant)

Tracing is kinda like the "with great power comes great responsibility" quote. Like yeah, it's a great tool for artists to learn, but to just straight up trace something that someone else made and call it your own? 👎👎👎

I don't think tracing is fully bad, it's not bad if you trace the shapes of the characters and stuff, but if you trace over all the details and such it's bad.

My sister traced my own art one time. Like, literally stole a physical drawing on a piece of paper, traced over it, and then showed me her traced drawing and was bragging to me about it. I found my drawing in her bed the next day. She tried so hard to convince me that her traced art was her own as if she didn’t literally take my paper

Absolutely love the responses everyone had I forgot to add on my post that story boarders exist as well so the animators know what the filmmakers want :) so it is in fact used in professional settings!

The only reason I'd be upset at someone using me for tracing is if they claim my mascot is their oc. She is very personal to me with how/why I designed her that way, same with the gender bent version (I'm gender fluid)

Some weeks ago i used to be OBSSESSED with your artstyle, but never really got to trace It (i would watch your speedpaints for hours) i remember tracing over those Pinterest bases and oh boy...it did NOT HELPED, but now i do Something similar to yours, and i agree that's it's a pretty easy way to study bodies Anyway, still Obsessed with ur artstyle, please post more speedpaints 🧎

It annoys me so much to see people straight up saying tracing is bad. I use tracing when I can't get the proportions right or I resort to it as a last option. Tracing your art isn't bad, like who's gonna get mad? The creator 💀? As long as it's used for the better good, like adjusting, fixing, etc. And not for the bad, like profiting, not giving credits, etc. It's fine. My younger sister tried drawing in my art style once since she liked how it looked (she was a beginner.), if I'm not wrong, she would either come to ask for help or just lightly move the pencil in the direction of the strokes and try to do the same. Never bothered me once knowing that she just wanted to get better 🤷‍♀. I remember I used to try and understand poses so I'd trace them and stylize them in my own way. Later on, I saw a video on KZbin that talked about it and how it was wrong, it threw me off of drawing for a bit before I decided to start little studies now and then. (Btw, you're art style is really cool :) )

I remember in like, 2020-2021 I would often trace mha and I don’t even know why but after that I started to draw my own characters in my style and I think that helped, kind of, idk man (Also I got into the video :DD)

I only trace to get the proportions of my subject accurate as possible then use other references to look at for the ideas before excuting the end result in my own artstyle (linework, coloring, shading)

Omg this reminds me of when I started drawing digital, I was 11 and got IbispaintX and hated drawing on there until I found out about Body bases and traced over it. I found out about tracing and was so scared because I thought it was a sin and felt like I was a failure. I deleted all of my art and took a break because I was so scared I started crying so much that my dad who's an artist found out, he told me about tutorials and tips and I got used to it. Now that I'm older I finally got used to it and I'm still practicing about drawing more dynamic poses. I only use bases if I'm lazy or can't draw a dynamic pose. I never had my art traced thankfully but I have had not only me but my friends art stolen by a KZbinr that we didn't like. I saw him post my artwork that I had just done. I told him that it was my art and that he needs to take it down and he said "No I worked on this piece really hard and would like to post it on here to show my creativity" I scrolled more and more and realized that he stole my friends art as well. I told him this was art theft but he still claimed it was his. So we reported it and it got taken down thankfully.

Tracing is fine as long as you don’t directly trace, claim it as your own, or attempt to make profit off of the traced art. I drew all my life also and also drew the power puff girls (90s) and they inspired my art style with the bug eyes big head style also MLP as well, but over time i improved on that style and made it my own over time as seen on my DA account butterflygirlco. I love your CMC art its really adorable 😍

I'm not gonna lie I use your picrew as to help figure out what I want to do with my OCs and how I want to design them. I don't trace them. I draw them. I draw them in my own style, but I credit you as the art style, and then I credit myself as importing my character into it, so I like using your picrew sometimes to make my character by using what you give me and then I import my own ideas and my own styles I don't copy every exact thing anyway I like your style and I like your videos it gives me a lot of inspiration ❤

I guess it depends on the situation. I've seen people trace or draw over ai images to spite the ai supporters, I don't mind that. But if someone is making an ai image, then tracing over it to act like they drew it, that's strange. Like you still didn't draw it💀 I remember seeing videos about people scamming others that way, like taking ai images, maybe drawing over them and selling that as commissions. JUST LEARN TO DRAW DAMN💀💀💀

When I used to trace before actually getting into art it didn't help. That's mainly because I had 0 idea what I was doing, I mindlessly traced the lines without understanding the shapes behind them, hence why I couldn't recreate anything and make it look good without tracing. But I'll give credit where it's due, my line quality improved SIGNIFICANTLY, I no longer had shaky lines, I wasn't even aware I had such a problem until I looked back at my old art, I was shocked by how squiggly and weird simple lines were. This problem was fixed sub conciously because of my tracing phase. I had no idea I was even improving my line quality. I still trace now, not in my final art but as practice , usually over real photos to break down general shapes and practice when I just can't grasp how to draw something. After tracing I keep the photo on the side as a reference and try to draw it again without any tracing. This is the type of tracing that actually helps and I wish I knew that sooner.

i’m gonna be completely honest, when i was younger i used to trace a LOT (which i am not proud of), but i eventually realized that it wasn’t helping me improve so i didn’t trace anymore i just used references and used the poses instead of stealing the character designs. it can be a good way to learn but, as you said, don’t completely rely on tracing.

For me personally tracing is only good when you use it in a good way, like poses,drawing weapons or objects that you can't do free handed ( but the drawing can still look stiff) But then there are people out that just straight up Trace art and claim it as their own or just steal the art and climate it has their own it's so annoying and disrespectful( I'm not referring to fan art for people that just think I am. just wanted to make that clear) it's good to like another artist art but then stealing it and claiming it as your own is just so disrespectful and you will get called out anyway so I do it😭🤚( I'm not justifying it) Moral ofthe story: instead of tracing and getting called out for it just try to take some time out of your day and draw something with hard work so you can actually be proud of yourself and what you created😊 (luv ur vids btw)

I think tracing is helpful if you need a bit of help from a more experienced artist and a good way to appreciate art (because copying is the biggest form of flattery ) but it’s not fair to steal art style and drawings completely and claim their ours I think personally we should all be unique with art style because that’s what makes it our art but whateves

I think it's fine to trace poses from photos! I do it sometimes to save time lol. With artworks I would suggest maybe asking the og artist if that's okay, and crediting them. Especially if their style is unique. As an alternative you can draw guidelines over the reference, then use it as your guide to actually draw the pose! There are no original poses, so I think it's fine to reference or take a pose from somewhere else :)
