Matt Berninger (the vocalist of the national) wrote these songs while struggling with a very strong depressive episode so that's why 'your mind is not your friend' sounds so raw. They really are amazing musicians. I'm glad they're getting more views and recognition because of Taylor.

The National is one of those bands whose music just exude warmth, beauty and this special feeling. Truly. I know sometimes they're classified as "dad rock" whatever that means. And that their lyrics are sometimes a bit too dense. But they're so so enjoyable. Aaron and Bryce's music is just so amazing and Matt's voice is brilliant, unique, stand out. First Two Pages of Frankenstein is their most gentle, approachable album to date. I hope fans of their featured artists, esp Taylor's, give it a listen. And then listen to Boxer. You'll thank yourself!!!

I feel like Taylor always felt he was above her in some way.. Much more high valued moralistic and out of her reach and sights altogether... In the song "peace" she sings "Your integrity makes me feel small.. You paint dreamscapes on the walls.. I talk s-h-t with my friends & its like I'm wasting your honour" Sometimes Joe feels unreachable.. I think that's why she sings in "The Alcott" "I had to do something To break into your golden thinking" Here golden thinking is his high moralistic values that are so far above from Taylor's reach, and makes him superior to her inner child inside.

Also in my head The Alcott made me think of right where you left me and The Alcott being the person who actually visits the rwylm person at the bar/restaurant and what they imagined in their head sitting there in the dark corner actually becoming reality. Lyrics like “I'd go to the corner in the back where you'd always be (…) Writing something about someone who used to be me”. Or referencing “twisted in threads” and “your golden thinking” in relation to invisible string, meaning the other person still thinks about the golden times of the early stages of their relationship. I love The Alcott, if I should rate it between the similar songs, it would have to be exile>The Alcott>evermore>coney island. But the pararelssss. I am gonna focus on the Taylor lines, like "have I become one of your problems?" callback to exile if you ask me. "everything that's mine is a landmine" as you mentioned, peace vibes, "why don't you rain on my parade?" TIWWCHNT?
