The novelization by Peter David adds some really nice extra scenes, by the way. Including a little bit more in the future scenes on Centauri Prime; Londo and G'Kar meeting for the first time ('I'll have my eye out for you Mollari!') and John and Jeff meeting at the barracks just prior to the Battle of the Line.

Of all the things Babylon 5 does well, I think it is the best at dramatic irony -- when the audience knows something and the characters do not. We grimace when Londo asks the young boy "What do you want?" We tear up when Ivanova gives her brother her earring. We are tried up in knots watching Michael York have first contact with the Minbari. We're yelling at the screen when Delenn doesn't care even a little bit about her prisoner Sheridan (until he passes on Lenonn's message). We go through that incredibly traumatic speech by the Earth President, but we know it's going to be (somewhat) okay. The dramatic irony is, I think, the greatest tool in the B5 toolbox.
@simonoleary92642 жыл бұрын
In Londo's monologue, there is one line that is particularly poignant. "I only hope that when it is my time, I die with half as much dignity as I saw in their eyes in the end. " As he is saying this, Londo KNOWS he will be dead in a few hours, this is his final wish. For me, Peter Jurasik absolutely nailed this monologue (and Londo generally).

@sdfried48772 жыл бұрын
Both Kosh's were in agreement and acting on behalf of their government in trying to bring the humans and Minbari together in their philosophical war against the Shadows. They are essentially the same at this point. It is not until Kosh spends extended time in the company of humans that he begins to empathize and relate to them. He feels responsible for their suffering and eventually he's obliged to help. As JMS put it, Kosh went native. When Ulkesh shows up on the station, he has no relationship bias and cares for the humans about as much as a scientist cares for the lab rats he's using in his studies.

For the Vorlons this has been a delicate game of "how do we ensure none of this gets fucked". Since they got all the information about current-day events from Sinclair 1000 years ago, they knew how things are *supposed* to work out, but not the precise details. It's like doing a puzzle, but if you don't fit every piece correctly on your first try the entire galaxy gets screwed over.

Very glad you waited, it's clear from the videos it was worth the wait. In case no one has mentioned it, the second Vorlon's name is Ulkesh (JMS mentioned this at one point), and both of them (Kosh and Ulkesh) are the Vorlons at the end of War Without End (that's how and why Kosh knew Sinclair/Valen, leading all the way back to The Gathering any why he was willing to open his Encounter Suit to him). This movie ties in so many strings, loose ends, and plot points over the entire series to date (and a few I won't mention going forward) - it's a masterpiece. I still prefer Thirdspace as my #1 B5 movie, but this is a very, very close second. And don't neglect to notice the true desperation of Humanity at the end and how in earlier seasons you had people on ISN going "But we won the war, the Minbari surrendered." and just how fast that revisionist history took place (only 10 years) - but those that lived it knew the truth. Seeing how so many of the characters backstories were forged, who they were and how that lead to we they are is so well done because it's organic, there's no retconning, it all actually ties in. JMS for all he's written I consider one of if not the best writer/storyteller of our time. And he, along with all of us, was so lucky to have the cast he did.

It's a rare thing to put together a prequel to a series where we generally know what happens overall, but getting down into the nitty gritty and nuance and different perspectives is why this movie always resonates so well with myself and probably most fans. I wholeheartedly believe that if you have no emotional response to Londo's narrative at about 1:10 (In the actual movie, the one that ends: "...They never ran out of courage. But in the end…they ran out of time.") then you have to be a robot.

What always gets me the most in this movie is how Londo describes the war, how the humans never ran out of courage for two years during the war and after the movie we know he also speaks about the courage his people will need in the days ahead, that he himself will die soon, sacrificing himself for his world. The moment where we realized when exactly he tells the story came to most of us as a shock. Time and time again Babylon 5 has shown us what you can do with an ongoing story that has been mapped out. And even though we have heard al lot this movie shows us from so many people, from different point of views, it still gets to us. And yet, as we are in the middle of the streaming war, no one seems to remember how to build up stories. In a time when views and the ability to rewatch would boost their numbers, we get mostly sub-.par stories. Also to remember that Babylon 5 had only half the budget of Star Trek back then and CGI was still in it's infancy. I can't help but wonder what we could have today.

While the close encounter between John and Delenn during the war was an interesting detail, I doubt she actively sought him out before he was assigned the Babylon 5. Remember, some Mimbari were so offended by him that they deliberately killed themselves to try to discredit him. Even Leneer was hostile towards him at first. If Delenn was more inclined to be friendly, it was probably because she remembered that when the Gray Council was split on how to react to Dukhat's death, she screamed "No mercy." As such, she had no right to be judgmental, and she knew it. The Universe may have had plans to put John and Delenn together, and Kosh may have been in on them, but I don't think Delenn was.

This movie really demonstrates the Vorlon adage: Understanding is a three-edged sword. There is so much to every story, some elements we never know. The misunderstanding that started everything. The involvement of Londo and how his choices exacerbated things. And even the plans within plans that got Sinclair aboard the Minbari cruiser. Also, if you remember, Londo does the opening voice-over for The Gathering, and one of the lines he uses is "I was there at the start of Third Age of mankind," the same line he uses to start his story to the children.

That would explain why Ulkesh is so cold and ruthless. The second thing is, I seem to recall John being told that he was the Minbari’s choice to replace Sinclair if anything ever happened. There was some minor retconing to the death of the Black Star if you compare the scene to what was said in the series. Sinclair specifically said that he never saw any Minbari pull a sneak attack and they fought honourably. And Sheridan in his own right explained to Ivannova at one point how they couldn't lock on to Minbari ships, so he got the idea to use mines, since they need to target lock, and how he mined the asteroid belt in Sol and lured the Black Star in. Here we clearly see Black Star use underhanded tactics to pull a sneak attack and Sheridan is doing a desperate last-ditch effort, rather than something pro-active. Apparently someone high up (probably the studio) felt Sheridan pro-actively setting up a minefield and intentionally luring the enemy into it would be too dishonorable and cowardly for the main hero of the series and forced these changes.

"My shoes are too tight and i've forgotten how to dance." still love that line. JMS proved again and again with this show that you don't need to make everything a mystery. You can know what will happen and it is still intersting and engaging and emotional to actually experience the journey. In this we basicly know all that is shown already. And it still hits all the feels. It is exceptional storytelling. I wish writers today would remember that a mystery in a show matters way way less than they think. For example: In the gathering we are told how Londo and G'Kar will die. And we see it happening in season three and it is still surprising and emotional - maybe moreso since it was lingering since the very first tv movie. There has never been a show planned out and told like babylon 5 has and maybe we never get one like it again. In the whole run of the show JMS wrote all episodes except for 18 (mostly from the first seasons)

Indeed, all Sinclair scenes were archive footage - Michael O'Hare wasn't well enough to film at the time. But they still made it work. This movie is so incredible for achieving so much with so little. It essentially takes place in three time periods without any time travel involved, it is constricted by budget and actor availability, they needed to convincingly have the actors play their characters ten years before the start of the show five years after... and it is just an amazing piece of film. With heartbreaking speeches and music (though I will say there is one single piece of soundtrack in the show that is even more emotional than that during Londo's speech about the war - I think some seasoned fans will know). Re: Dr Franklin & his medical ethics That was always one of the interest moral questions for me, would it be wrong to use such information & weapons if the alternative was humanity people completely wiped out? The scene where the President is giving the Battle of the Line speech always makes me shiver, that one desperate hope & asking for volunteers to hold the line for it.

So pleased you enjoyed the film it is very clever how they spun the tale and revisited the beginning.

It is the story of the Earth Minbari... It is a prequel movie ... :)

I'm curious as to what you think of the new B5 series that was in the works (not sure if it still is tbh) B5 has been one of my favourite series to watch since its release and watching your reactions has kept me entertained for ages now. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

two sides of the same medallion. Good Kosh: These people have to follow our path but let's convince them with hints ands signs. Bad Kosh: I agree. But if they don't follow we have to root out the evil no matter the cost.

Wonderful! Thanks for keeping on. :) Now to watch. Here we go!

Who's to say these scenes weren't filmed in full from the get-go, and throughout all these seasons and movie we've been seeing little pieces here and there. Also, I've thought of Kosh & Kosh as brothers. I know, how can they be related? Probably Lion King getting in the way of rational thinking. :p

When the President of Earth gives her final address to everyone; I find it heart-wrenching and so convincing that this is our last stand. 😥 What a show! 😃

JNS was at the top of his game in this one. Perhaps the best of the B5 movies.

This movie was such a beautiful gift to all of us who had experienced the week to week unfolding of the previous 4 seasons. Why some fans, who should know better, would try to deprive newbies of that experience by watching it early baffles me.

I barely got one person to watch the series and it was right when it got yanked off Amazon so they did not finish. It's a different experience if this is what they see first but better than nothing. I'd personally do it after season 1 at the earliest for someone new if there was a commitment. The Sinclair to Sheridan switch would make more sense than it did in real time I suspect.

Never understood why Sheridan was considered expendable. I mean, he was a visible hero.

It's a crazy level of detail, but if you go back and look you'll see that Ivanova wears one ear ring.

I don't think this is spoilers. I think its the books that explain "not kosh" was Kosh's mate, which is why he got so anti anyone not vorlon after Kosh's death. But he's also the one from the episode when they stole B4 and Jeff became Valen.

Back in the day JMS himself used to post on the old B5 Website he broke down the difference between Kosh and Faux Kosh (real name Ulkesh according to JMS) Ulkesh was more pf a traditionalist seeing human as nothing more than primitives while Kosh saw the potential humanity.

It's much better to avoid the spoilers posted by people who get so excited they just spill all the beans in their frenzy to 'explain' things that haven't happened yet.

With this movie and seasons 1-4 out of the way, it is finally time to say it...... Now you know John' Sheridan's fandom nickname... John "Nuke'em' Sheridan.

She's already seen Thirdspace as well, so she has seen all three occasions that John "Nuke'em" Sheridan has earned that nickname.

Glad you enjoyed this so much. Personally? I don't much like these "flashback-heavy" (or flashback "injected") episodes/shows/movies. I dunno, it just feels a little Heavy-Handed to me or something. (Like it is a bit TOO dependent on our main characters.) The ONLY reason I "like" it in THIS case is because it is Babylon 5! AND it was done rather well.

I think I'm in the minority with you here. There are a lot of good bits, but the likelihood that that the two main narn and centauri negotiators with earth happened to be G'kar and Londo is silly. The idea that G'kar, Sheridan and Franklin all went on a secret mission during the war is silly. And that they ended up on a Minbari ship in front of Delenn is very silly. Without those kind of things I think it'd be a lot stronger. But obviously almost no one agrees with us.
@zingzangspillip12 жыл бұрын
I've never liked the convenience that Sheridan, Franklin, G'Kar & Londo are all involved with the meeting with Lenonn. It is such a huge moment in the story, but no-one ever mentions it. The rest of it is great, though. There is an excellent scene in the screenplay/novelisation where Sinclair and Sheridan have a conversation. Anyone who can track it down, should.

JMS is a master of setting seeds to grow when he wanted them, a tour de force of clever writing... i miss this level of quality scifi... the expanse is the only thing thats come close for me.
