I was fortunate enough to visit the ruins of Babylon. Bar none, the most memorable location I’ve ever been too. It’s remarkable, impressive, important and should be protected. Preserved for the sake of history and humanity.

Oh man I'm jealous. I've been to Rome, Pompeii, etc. (Italy in general), but I've longed for my entire life to visit... well everywhere lol...but especially places like Babylon, Persepolis, etc. Places that are less "mainstream" than Italy, Greece, and the like. Although, don't get me wrong, I'd give anything to visit those places too lol. Even Italy again; I'd be happy going anywhere with ancient history.

A concise, lucid and masterly lesson on the history of southern Mesopotamia. As some one similarly passionate about Mesopotamian history, i can not help noticing a recurrent pattern in it. The forces from the desert, the forces from Elam and forces from northern Iran/ Caucus have interplayed with the native Sumerian culture that shaped its story over millenia. Akkadians, Amorites, Assyrians, Aramaeans were those desert forces ( later Arabs). Elam had love - hate relationship from Sumerian times till Neo- Babylonian times, It should be noted that the Achaemenids came under Elamite tutelage before they conquered Medes and Neo-Babylonians. Then there are these forces, the northern Iran - Indo European ones. Possibly Gutians, but defenitely Hittites, Mittani, Kassites, Medes and Parthians. These three forces interacted with the native Sumerian core, inheriting its wisdom and spreading it to farther parts of the world. That story continued, in Greece and Rome, In Iran and India. Thanks for your brilliant history lessons and you really rekindled my interest in the history of antiquity. A few suggestions. If you can dwelve more upon the bronze age collapse and its consequences in both Mesopotamia and also Egypt, that will be great. Also if you can link the Mesopotamian history with Indus Valley history. Second millenium BC saw the end of that civilization as well and its links with Mesopotamia from Sumerian times is well known. Hoping to see more content from you.

I love the animated way you read primary sources, it really makes the history come alive and feel Real and human. Like, I'm not just passively learning about this historical topic, I felt like I was hearing and making a connection to the people living so long ago. You are a brilliant story teller. And it felt like I was there in the palaces and courtyards of Babylon, witnessing a scribe recite the great history of the city to a crowd on the edge of their seats. Many thanks to your channel and your work!

HOLY HELL man, this must have been a _huge_ undertaking to do sucha well researched 3 hour vid. thank you for amazing content :D I can't remember if I have requested this before, but do you think you would be able to do a video on the city of Rhodes? I'm not sure if that falls outside of your focus as a historian, and if it does I apologize for the non-relevant request

Now that was a journey. It's amazing to me that civilization was so complex in the era where so much rich history is glossed over in favour of Sargon and Hammurabi. It also astounds me that this era, which was as distant to the Late Roman Republic and Early Principate (my favourite period of ancient history) as they are to us, is yet remembered in such detail. So much calamity has occurred over the millennia since these people lived and these men ruled, yet somehow the remnants of their civilization can be recalled by us now.

Great info. I never heard of the Kassite people before. I'm wondering if they might have been Scythians since they spoke an Indo-European language, were great horsemen and their art centered on depicting horses. Is there any evidence that they came from the Steppes and might have been Scythians? Thank you for this comprehensive video on the Babylonians. Much appreciated.

Hi, thanks for watching and great question! So I think most scholars would agree that they were not Scythians since that group would come about 7-800 years later and move south from the steppes of Eurasia, With regard to speaking an Indo-European language, that is also debated but some believe this because as you pointed out, they were great horsemen and charioteers, like other Indo-European peoples. The issue with the language though is that our knowledge of it is limited to just some vocabulary - knowledge of Kassite grammar at this time is pretty much non-existent. The only proven speakers of Indo-European languages that we know about that were contemporary to Kassite were Hittite, Luwian and a few others, and to my knowlege, the Kassite words available to us don't seem to be related to them or could have been loan words. Some also compare them to the ruling class of the Mitanni, who have very Indo-European sounding names. As for their homeland, Babylonian and Assyrian texts just mention that they came from the central Zagros mountains. My opinion is that the Kassites very well could have had some link to Indo-European peoples like the kings of the Mitanni, but there is just not enough evidence out there to definitively prove this. Hope this helps. Thanks again for watching and all the best for 2023!

Brilliant and I've not even watched it yet. And what is good is because it's from Cy we know it will actually be about the Babylonian Empire and not the earlier Summerian or Akkadian civilisations who some KZbin commentators seem unable to distinguish between, electing to refer to them all as Babylonians. Sometimes even at a time before the City/Town/Village/ A single hut there.... in Babylon existed .

Hi, thanks for your comment, really appreciate it. That is the assumption yes, but as of now there has not been any actual text or document uncovered stating that he or Nabopolassar were indeed Chaldean. The texts regarding Nabopolassar's ancestry (Babylonian and Assyrian documents) merely state that he came from the "south near the sea" or something of that sort but whether he was Chaldean or Akkadian is not explicitly stated. While it may be tradition and indeed correct, because it hasn't been conclusively proven by any archaeological text is why I stop short of saying that he was definitely Chaldean. This is not my opinion but that of the consensus of scholars in general. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

@History with Cy hey man thanks for the response. i know the biblical text calls him Chaldean and King of the Chaldeans, but not sure about archeological documents, hopefully they uncover something.

I love Sumerian and Babylonian history and I don't think it's a coincidence that in Australia so far from there I happen to live on Eridu lane and are madly in love with a Persian Elamite haha. I don't think anything is as beautiful as a Persian woman

Imaging 3000 years in our future there will be people looking at our history like we are looking in our past
My Two Cents
My Two Cents 4 күн бұрын
They absolutely will. And 3000 years after that, people will be looking back at our society similarly to how we see the latter part of the Neolithic. What REALLY fascinates me is to imagine how the past will be viewed in the far future, more than 10,000 years from now. We only have a very small frame of reference for that far in the past. 10,000 years ago we'd barely figured out agriculture. Who knows how the future will look at the past

Retired Assyriologist says... Babylon means in Akkadian; Bab + ili = Gate + of the Gods = Gate of the Gods. As Erbil = Arba + ili = Four Gods. Aššur (Assyria) = The god Aššur. Language is the best place to start understanding Babylon and its contribution to the history of humanity.

A small circle of enlightened people can "move mountains" and create grand civilizations but when they are gone so is the magic that made them great. Much like when a son takes over a father's business empire and it flounders and fails.

Cy you say in that video That Shamshi-Adad and the Eshnunna kings hated each other that much that there is no way they would join forces to attack Sin-Muballit but I've just been reading about the Stele of Dadusha which commemorates the joint forces of Shamshi-Adad and Dadusha The King of Eshnunna (son of Ipiq-Adad II and father of Ibal-pi-el II) victory over the King of Qabara, Banu-Ishtar.. It does seem odd though why Shamshi-Adad would join forces with Dadusha considering what his father Ipiq-Adad II had done to him in the past taking his city and sending him into exile. And then unbeknownst to him at the time, both Dadusha and later his son Ibal-pi-el II also become his son's (Ishme-Dagan I) main enemies in the future.
