Great reaction, thanks! "Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs by fans and their most played live one (up to 277 tines to be exact... and counting!). It's also one of my top favorite songs. It was released in June 2013. Su-metal was 15 years old while Yuimetal and Moametal were both 13 (about to turn 14) back then. The style sub-genre is called electronicore, a mix between electronica and metalcore with a hardcore style breakdown. The word "Megitsune" = "me" + "kitsune" which means female + fox so, vixen. Hence the "kitsune" masks everywhere. In the Japanese folklore, the kitsune is an entity which is able to transfigure into a human form, mainly into the form of a young lady, with the objective to deceive men and cause them pain. So they sing that they aren't kitsunes but megitsunes, "pure-hearted maiden-like female foxes". BABYMETAL fans are known as "The ONE" collectively and "kitsune" / "megitsune" individually. So you can tell this song is important! And I'm sure you have seen our 🦊 emojis on comments. That breakdown hits hard and besides the pig squeals, the melody is from a Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms). It took 36 demos to Takehiro Mamiya best known as Yuyoyuppe (or Yuppemetal), the song's arranger, until Kobametal (their producer) was 100% happy with the final result. It may sound crazy but this is why "Megitsune" is one of their best songs (if not the best). In my opinion, this music video is a masterpiece. And about its locations: - The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo at Asagaya Shinmei-gu Shrine in Tokyo. This is a stage where music and dances are performed during festivals. - The shrine right before the breakdown with the orange-ish torii gates is the famous Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto. The girls were so happy that the director traveled to Kyoto just to film that sequence. Until next time! 🤘🦊

road-runner -- Well explained! And still there are so many symbols and elements in the vid that one could talk about them for half an hour, e.g. the traditional instruments, the mirror scene, the glass pearl game, the dagger mic, the pantomime similar dance (forming a fan with the hand to cover the face), the lyrics, etc. Megitsune is not just a song, but a little compendium of Japanese art. Although from a purely musical point I prefer other BM songs (e.g. Rondo of Nightmare), Megitsune is BM's "deepest" and most important song and became the anthem of the Japanese fräulein wonder in rock and metal (see the Nemophila cover).

_Sore!_ 🦊🤘🔥 Glad to see you're back with this suggestion, they were quite young in this one but wait to see Doki Doki Morning or Iine!!, you can enjoy this song with the live sound of the Kami Band at Budokan 2014 or Budokan 2021 with the new formation. Fans were enjoying and having so much fun watching this live every night at Sabaton's Europe Tour and later at Asian and Australian Tour, and The Babyklok Tour in the US, they also got another Europe headline tour this month, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this song like they did recently in all these concerts, we always love the shanenigans when performing live between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown. This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 (Yui and MoaMetal )and 15 yo (SuMetal, the lead singer), so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri). "Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them. During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance. In summary, song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox. "Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself. When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it. Megitsune is a quintessential BM song and among top ranking songs by fans, SuMetal said she didn't mastered yet, that's why she used to sound check with this song before live concerts. The origin of the "fox sign" is really long to explained but here's a short summary: The Fox God (Kitsune Sama) is the Metal God who sent these girls (and Kami Band after to help them with the metal sound) to unify the world and set them free from Jpop slavery. The kitsune sign came out by accident around the time they created the group by the girls when trying to imitate the typical metal horn sign they noticed it was similar when doing fox shadow shape, they implemented this as part of the lore, imagery, theme and live concerts, the lore is huge so take your time and keep digging and riding the Foxhole 🦊🤘 Btw they praised for real and made a ritual to the Fox God for this song to be a hit and successful, and thanks to the Fox God this is one of their major hits and favorite BM fan songs. -NotACult- 👀 This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want. Next suggestion: - Ijime, Dame, Zettai live at Sonisphere Festival 2014. See you next time. 🦊🤘🔥

Great reaction - and good job with the pronunciation. The masks are all Fox masks (still no wolves here). Megitsune even translates as female fox or vixen. You've had all the explanations already so I won't repeat everything. This was from 2013 - they were talented from the start and the whole concept was formed around Su-metal's vocal talents .... earlier songs include: 'Doki Doki Morning' 'Iine' (that is iine pronounced ee-neh) 'Ijime, Dame, Zettai' (call it IDZ if it is easier) 'Headbanger' 'Uki Uki Midnight'

From the outside, it just looks like any normal shrine with a sizeable stone torii gate but just a short walk beyond that is the main filming location for the ‘ Megitsune ‘ (2013) music video. The Noh Hall is used for various traditional performing arts, festivals and a Babymetal video! The three girls and the band perform the song on stage with the modern impression of bonsai pictured on the wooden panel behind them. This part of the shrine complex is not open every day so please be aware of that should you wish to see it in all its glory. Sunday seems to be the best bet for when it is open for public viewing. This is one of the “Ten Shrines Of Tokyo‘ which are considered the most important as they were selected in 1868 by Emperor Meiji after he had moved to Edo and renamed it Tokyo. The beautiful red torii gates also featured in ‘Tokyo Pop‘ (1988) and they are proof that you really don’t need to go to Kyoto to see such an image!

Another cool live BabyMetal song to check out is Ijime, Dame, Zettai live at Sonisphere 2014. It was there first big concert outside of Japan. It was there big breakout into the international metal scene. Supposedly they were going to appear on a smaller stage but got switch to main stage. People were there to see METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, SLAYER and more and up comes BabyMetal. By the end of the show they had the crowd cheering for more and they were the surprise talk of the festival. Very cool anti bullying song and the solo section is sick! You will dig it.

⚡ 💀 💕 / 🦊 ⛩ [MOA] SU-METAL will slash you. Really. [YUI] Yeah. [SU] (laughs) (Megitsune video commentary from the BABYMETAL members) You were pretty close on the pronunciation of the song title. They spell it out, but unfortunately in katakana: メギツネ. It's "Meh-gee-tsoo-neh". Su was 15. Yui and Moa were 13, almost 14 when the music video was released. Even though they were wearing white robes, this was not the Kami Band. The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments in this video are dancers with the Movement Design group. Chidori Yakumo is their director. She is the woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown. Megitsune is my jam. It's still my favorite BABYMETAL song, video and choreography. Definitely quintessential BABYMETAL. Like their new song 'Metali' (メタり!!) you could even call this Kawaii Festival Metal. BABYMETAL's producer Koba sent this song back to the song arranger Yuyoyuppe dozens of times before he was satisfied with it. This one consistently tops fan polls, and has been performed live more than any other BABYMETAL song. Much of the video was shot on location on a Noh drama stage by the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has since become something of a pilgrimmage site for BABYMETAL fans.

If you want the earliest, 'Doki Doki ☆ Morning' is their first song and first music video. The DVD single and the abridged music video were released in October 2011. Suzuka was 13, Yui and Moa were 12. They recorded it a year before that. The 'Megitsune' single and music video were released in June of 2013.

It's great to see how the production managed to create a light song, with 11, 12 year old girls singing and mixing very well done metal elements. I saw that you reacted to other bands from Japan (I follow Nemophila, Band Maid, Unlucky Morpheus, Lovebites and Wagakki Band). i heard this song back in late 2013 and been hooked ever since. to think they were 15 and 13 years old here. now you have to do this song live. just remember Babymetal was formed when Su was 12 and Moa and Yui were 11. their first video was Doki Doki Morning. in that video they used borrowed clothes. they even taught the fake band to dance and move. Amuse thought it was an experiment so no budget for the video. and now look at them now with their shows in Japan. again i will make a suggestion for reacting to the Guide to Babymetal by Cryptic Misery, the 45 minute version. it will help you with the history of Babymetal and how it came about. well worth the reaction.

@@Dragon-Believer Thank you for my poor English.😀 I wonder what I like about English stuff... As for music, the majority of my generation in Japan discovered Western music when we were teenagers and almost got into it, but I had moved away from Western music since after that. Nevertheless, after I grew up and had the financial means to do so, I collected at least one album by some major Western rock artists. I hardly listen to hip-hop or anything like that. So I had listened to Japanese jazz fusion for a long time. In movies, I like Clint Eastwood, and Woody Allen or so. In TV drama, I liked the early ER series. As for Band Maid, it had a live on 2th September at the live bar, Club Junk Box in Nagano city, near my hometown, but it was no announcement about tickets going on sale anytime soon, and when I found out, they went on sale and were sold out immediately, (tears). But I did see Ningen Isu live the other day at the same place. It was great.
Megitsune will go down as among the greatest non English heavy metal songs of all time, right up there with Rammstein's or Sepultura's classic bangers.

The Fox God is Babymetal's patron deity and so you'll see lots of foxes in Babymetal's imagery. The Megitsune lyrics draw parallels with the traits of foxes in Japanese myths and the traditional way Japanese women (and maybe all women) have to behave in patriarchal societies. If I had to choose one song to sum up BM's soul it would be Megitsune. BM's path to today has not been entirely straight; the third album wasn't Kobayashi's best work and it took them a long time to recover from Yui leaving and the death of their lead guitarist, Mikio Fujioka. Actually, the Kami Band hasn't really recovered because their integration into the performances has changed and they now wear masks, which I will always dislike. But they are back touring with a new member, Momoko, and the latest album, The One, has some great songs on it. Megitsune, or vixen, is an early Babymetal song released in 2013, so Su will be 15 in the video and Moa and Yui are 13, and it is one of BM's female empowerment songs. The temple and the Japanese instruments sets a very traditional tone, but right from the start old Japanese values are challenged as Yui and Moa pull on Su's obi (sash) to release her from her kimono so she can do the high leg lift dance. That dance contrasts with the traditional restrained dance in the break down. That break down is a very old song called "Sakura, Sakura" and is about the cherry blossom, but BM even subvert that and Su sing's "kitsune, kitsune" (fox, fox). This is also a call back to their parent idol group which is Sakura Gakuin or Cherry Blossom Academy. In Japan the fox is seen as a clever shape shifter and the lyrics liken women to female foxes in the way they have to change themselves to please others or to hide their true feelings. In the dance BM mime wearing a mask and also putting on make up as another way to hide themselves. But the strength of women is emphasized and the expression of this peaks when Su shouts: "Otome wa nametara ikan zeyo" and draws a knife from her microphone. The phrase is translated as "Maidens shouldn’t be underestimated" (credit Du-metal), although that is a polite interpretation. It's also used in a famous Japanese gangster film called Onimasa and is translated there as " don't you sh*t with me". Some of BM's lyrics can be quite shocking to Japanese audiences and native speakers say that gets lost on non-Japanese speakers who have to experience Babymetal's lyrics through the distorting lens of translation.

Kitsune ja nai! Otome na Megitsune!" ("Ты не кицунэ, ты не кицунэ! Ты дева Мегицунэ!")

Megitsune means female foxes. She pulls out a knife and says... Don't underestimate maidens... (female foxes.)

This song’s themes focus on women’s tendencies to hide their true intentions and emotions in order to be perceived as “ideal women”, making comparisons to actresses and, more notably, foxes

The song is about a woman who transforms into a fox goddess, and how she can change her appearance to fit in with the times but still stay true to her inner self. The lyrics emphasize the idea that women are like actresses, always putting on a show and hiding their true feelings, but ultimately they have the strength to endure and overcome their challenges. The chorus reminds us that women are always changing, just like the fox goddess, and that they should never be underestimated.

This may be the best summary I've seen of it that doesn't become long winded and starts inserting random western ideologies into it. 😆

The fox mask is representing the kitsune. Kitsune is the Japanese word for fox. Foxes are well known around the world as cunning tricksters, but Kitsune (Japanese for fox) are a little different. Kitsune are spiritual beings that can shapeshift into either male or female forms and possess superior intelligence. Part of the Japanese folklore pictured in the video (orange Tori gates) are Fushimi Inari which are guarded by the Inari fox statues at the gates. 🦊🦊🦊
