I'd never heard Gutman play Bach before I saw this, but I love her sensitivity to the harmonies, and IMO she uses a perfect sound for these pieces, plus the variation she uses during the repeats makes it a very interesting listen. Too many players don't use repeats in Bach to add anything, they just repeat what they've just played without any kind of variation.
@gwedielwch11 жыл бұрын
Natalia Gutman discussed this in her 1999 interview with Tim Januf. "In 1990 I began using a baroque bow when playing baroque music and I now have a 5-string cello that I use for the Sixth Suite. I have found a new range of expressive possibilities and articulations with my baroque bow. ... I'd like to think that I'm playing in a manner that is more authentically baroque than I did before.."

I love Natalia Gutman & I love Bach. She will be playing here in Istanbul this month. But shouldn't get excited, we ordinary people are never allowed in these fantastic concerts: by far too expensive to afford. Music is not just for the rich!
@iremg.87910 жыл бұрын
türk organizasyon şirketlerinin aç gözlülüğü.. öğrenci olmak biraz avantaj sağlıyor en azından. türklerin klasik müzik gibi muhteşem bi şeyden mahrum kalması tamamen fahiş konser, kurs fiyatları yüzünden. muhteşem trionun dünki sinagog konserinde 150 lirayla gelen sosyete kokoşlar çıkmak için arayı bile beklemiyorlar halbuki..

This is going to be my cello teacher when she get old. I can just feel it
I knew a cellist who used to hold his bow like that as well. He said it felt like he had more control over it. If you hold it closer to the center, then your arm doesn't have to arc as far when changing strings, and it is easier to have more pressure on the strings when playing with the end of the bow. I don't know if she has the same reasons, but as you said, she obviously knows what she is doing. Stunning piece of music.

Une grande pureté de style et très beau son . Un tempo qui me parait être excellent! Une prise d'archet étonnante, certainement proche de l'époque. á moins que les bras courts de l'artiste ne l'obligent à cette technique.

You will I think like her next point: "[Rostropovich] ... does not believe that one must strive to play in a baroque manner. He believes that you should bring Bach to our time, not go back to Bach's time. I don't want to play Bach in his way, but when I listen to him I deeply respect that he's playing Bach with all his heart and that he does so with great conviction. Fortunately, there's no right and wrong in music, so I can enjoy performances both by him and Anner Bylsma."

@John Nikolatos I think he's referring to the f# at the end of the bar where it returns in G major, which is the descending 7th, which takes to the VI grade (E minor), but, talking to @Martin King, it's kinda hard to explain why it makes you have goosebumps... Maybe studying music theory would help :)

She does not play better than Yo Yo Ma. It is musically restrictive because she follows the structure and manuscript closely. Music is spontaneous not predictable.
@BetterMe9817 жыл бұрын
She's playing authentically to how it was written by Bach. Yo yo Ma plays it in a modern virtuoso style... you cannot fairly compare.
@kevinlebagousse65176 жыл бұрын
shorter the bow, shorter!!
@Cellodore12 жыл бұрын
Meh. Not a very sterling performance, certainly not a very evocative one. Though it may sound cliche, Yo Yo Ma's recording remains my favorite of this prelude and most suites. With her, though I can grasp her phrasing, everything seems to fall flat and comes out rather clumsy. But then again, I don't really like Rostropovich's style of playing either, so I guess I may just disagree with the school she comes from. Bach is hard to rough up, though.
