"I never play for musical connoisseurs because they don't need me. They can appreciate music just by looking at the score. I play for the people who may be listening to a piece for the first time in their lives and I try to express as much as I can and as strongly as I can in an effort to help them appreciate at least a large part of the piece." - Mischa Maisky

Whether Mischa is playing this too slowly or not is only of insignificant importance. The fact that he is getting the point of the Allemande across is more important. It would be dreadful if the Allemande were both slow and chugging along, like a clock that takes 3 minutes to get past 60 seconds. With that said, Mr. Maisky's phrasing is wonderful and he never loses direction. It is a work of beauty.

This music is therapic... It takes you to deepest, most hidden memories and wounds your heart deeply with all your forgotten desires and hopes. It opens your heart and makes it bleed. Truly and unreservedly.

snob: oh my this is so beautiful.. one of the most beautiful i've ever heard from any instrument. bravo maestro maisky, you are the greatest! (upon learning score says Allemande) snob: I CHANGE MY MIND, THIS IS TERRIBLE, TOTALLY RUINS THE BAROQUE STYLE. NONE OF THE ALLEMANDE ARE PLAYED THIS SLOWLY. I TAKE BACK MY EMOTION. note to snob: relax.. just enjoy the music, okay?

I don't think this molto adagio tempo is out of bounds. The score is enormous for an allemande, and playing it this way contrasts with the preceding and proceeding movements perfectly.

I love how he takes the time to play this wonderful piece, it gives me the pleasure of taking the time to listen to this wonderful music, and the delicate, simple, mastered notes allows me to bask in thoughts such as beauty, sadness, tranquility, love, passion, and life's simple joy. if only music stayed this way, life would be a whole lot different...

its sad that music like this isn't seen or made as much as it used to be. Almost as if the true meaning of music is being lost.

I'd been wondering whether the tempo in my KZbin post of this Allemande isn't a little too slow. So I've just listened to Starker's version on KZbin; and it's no faster than mine. And now I'm listening to Maisky's version, and guess what? His tempo is even slower than both mine and Starker's. So if I take it overly slow, I can at least say that I'm in good company.

I think this is the most difficult part of Cello suite N6. Interestingly all of the ornaments are noted which is not usual in in this time. This rendition is so moving! This music is comes from the deepness of soul.

@3:18 probably the best chord in this song, so rich and melodic and it fits right into this beautiful piece and just lifts your spirit and places it into a realm of perfection, somethin on Mischa could acheive

The chord you marked appears at the repeat of the 'a' part of the movement which is in aabb form. Therefore the same chord appears in the first time played 'a' as well, precisely @00:43. I also love that chord. It is so rich in timbre. Here second b is cut although it was video recorded as well. With it, the entire movement clock a stunning 13 minutes!

@Violinater yes he surtanly is a genius, but I must say my musician 'préféré' is Beethoven. Bach is soothing, Beethoven has more emotions involved. And that's what I like about his (beethoven's) music. Never the less, Bach is a master of music, and kicks the assess of all 'modern' music! truly timeless...

I don’t like the discussion about playing pieces how they were supposedly played in style at the time … I’d like to think to please the composer and make him like the way I play his or her piece, which can be different to historical performance practice, but who says, that another way would make the composer unhappy? Although I would play it differently, I really respect this interpretation of Maisky!
