Really outstanding... I never heard the cello payed so perfectly in tune for so long, and with such a wide range of sounds and volume. I think I prefer the chaconne on the cello, with all the opportunities for dark colours and whispers that the cello offers. Hearing any familiar piece played masterfully on a related instrument always throws new light on it, and especially on Bach. The cello suites sound interesting and different when played on the Viola by Lillian Fuchs, and eye opening when on the V. Da Spalla played by Sergey Malov. You are a now a member of a small and elite artists' club who can pull this feat off. Congratulations.

Way to go Gabriel! You are a real artist. I have a vid of this myself playing it also in g minor. I played it today in a concert in d minor. I strung a cello up with an e string. I think it's better. Although I'll say that you do really good job of keeping the low notes and chords really clear. Mine is perhaps muddier... the e string cello really helps with this a lot. I actually played the whole partita! It's really cool. Especially the Sarabande. Anyway, bravo to you! You're pretty young yes? Bright future ahead....
@gabrielmartinscello3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the comment, Rafael! I knew that in taking on this project clarity could be a big problem in the low registers. I’m sure some people think it’s still too muddy, but I tried my best to compensate! That’s a great idea about the E string- perhaps one day I will be brave enough to try it! Definitely planning on learning the rest of the Partita soon too, such incredible music. Bravo to you! All best-
@rafaelhoekman47123 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielmartinscello It think that there are pros and cons to it. I see guys playing it in d minor in all those awkward positions, and it really changes the composition too much from an instrumental point of view. I think some guys do pretty well; Santiago, Jonah Kim, but, it was never meant to be a struggle...part of the problem with the 6th suite as well...how to keep it in your fingers for a long time, so you can play it often... Check out Mario Brunnello. He has played and recorded all the sonatas and partitas on what he calls a cello piccolo. The early music cellist Elinor Frey has a slighty smaller cello tuned with e string she calls it a tenor violin. I bought my extra cello off Kijiji and paid cash for it lol! It's pretty cool. It's not fancy, but it's a 100 year old German cello that has a decent tone at least, even if it's not loud. I got pretty lucky. I have 3 cellos now anyways cause I was gifted one, and I loaned my other one to a student (temporarily). I am certainly enjoying playing some of these violin pieces on the e string cello. Try the 1st mvt of the partita in b minor! There's just nothing like it in the cello suites! There is an anonymous transcription on Imslp of everything. I have to confess that I read the bass clef pitch on the e string cello. Good thing I don't have perfect pitch! Anyways, I really liked your Chaconne a lot, and you did do very well keeping it clear on the low strings. I watched the whole thing! Usually I lose interest...Nice that you managed to get a plug on Slipped Disc! How'd you manage that??

I loved listening to this: you sound so sure and so spontaneous, absolutely making it your own. I am curious, though, as why did you chose to play it in G minor, rather than in D minor, as many other cellists do?
@gabrielmartinscello3 жыл бұрын
I thought about doing it in D minor, but in the end I chose to prioritize the open strings and natural positioning that it takes place in on the violin. Playing it in G minor on the cello makes this possible. Thank you!
@wadesdavis3 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielmartinscello I agree completely! You’re a beautiful cellist! I’d love to connect with you. Look up Wade Davis cello and you’ll find my Bach Suites video for Washington Bach Consort. I’d love your thoughts on it.

@@gabrielmartinscello Accurate choice, since in D minor it loses the armonics of the open strings, very much needed for the over all mood of the piece.
