The original concerto in Dm is lost forever, I am just glad Bach loved it so much he reused it as an opening sinfonia and then as a harpsichord concerto. Sadly we will never know if the original concerto was in fact a violin concerto and what were the exact notes :( But I am happy with this reconstruction!

Its a tough for a violinist because the person has to shift to maybe 6th position or even 7th to play those hard double-stops.

The bariolage part? The bowing is easy (correction: Gets easier over time the more you practice it) but gets really tiring and painful after a while. The inotation feels like hell is alive in your violin.

Some people use this observation to argue against BWV 1052 being originally a violin concerto, because Bach never wrote notes that high (even with double stops) for violin

Hi, It's a definite fact that two of his concerti for Keyboard are arrangements of Violin concerti by Bach (BWV 1054 and 1058). Two more are arrangements of Brandenburg Concerti. There is strong evidence suggesting that all the others are arrangements of wind and string instrument concerti. Bach frequently re-used his pieces many times. Examples of this can be found in the cantatas.

"Like the other harpsichord concertos, BWV 1052 has been widely believed to be a transcription of a lost concerto for another instrument. Beginning with Wilhelm Rust and Philipp Spitta, many scholars suggested that the original melody instrument was the violin, because of the many violinistic figurations in the solo part-string-crossing, open string techniques-all highly virtuosic." - Wikipedia

It is thought that the original Keyboard concerto (BWV 1052) is an arrangement by Bach of an older violin concerto (the same is thought of all the keyboard concerti apart from one, I think). There have been many attempts lie this one to restore and reconstruct the older concerto for violin.

It didn't exist actually, this is an arrangement of the d minor harpsichord concerto by Bach. At Baroque era it was very normal to compose a concerto and arrange it for another instrument(s)... So, Bach did the same thing.. He composed concerti and later he arranged by himself his concerti to harpsichord(s). All harpsichord concerti of Bach are actually arrangement of other concerti. Mostly we have original concerto and the arrangement of that... So mostly we have 2 version of the same concerto. But 1st harpsichord concerto (in d minor) is different because we don't have the original concerto... We assume that it was a concerto for another instrument and later on arranged for harpsichord ... As we have original harpsichord concerto, we try to create the"original " version... for that reason there are many versions of this "violin concerto"...

This recording is being played on what is known as Baroque Tuning. Baroque Tuning is basically a semitone lower than our usual tuning nowadays which is 440 Htz. In Baroque tuning however, it is set on about 415 Htz.

No what happens is that baroque music is often tuned very low like at 438-440 so it sounds like half a step lower than the actual key( here it sounds like C# minor but the actual piece is in D minor)
@quiquebou7 жыл бұрын
Ruben, sorry. How can you say 438-440 is very low? Today a' is 440 Hz ! Between 1500 and 1670 a' was 466 Hz., so half a tone higher! Here it sounds in Dis.

In case anyone is reading this, the normal tuning for period practice baroque music is A=415 these days, although it varied quite a bit back in history.

Brilliant piece, but the solos should be played in tempo throughout the piece. If one plays very evenly, at a slower tempo, because of the even motion, it makes the performance sound as if it were done at a faster tempo. But because it's broken, it loses a lot of the continuity and drive; it loses a sense of impetuosity (in the sense of playing with great force) when you break the phrase; and from that, it makes it seem that the artist couldn't handle the passage work. You'd never do that in the 32nd note passages in Brandenberg Concerto #4; and this is a full-on work for the violin: so why do it here ? Accordingly, there is a reference for this concerto having been originally written for the violin. It works well either way for violin or harpsichord: but the violinist has taken certain passages up an octave in some spots, which works well, but probably would not have been done in Bach's day. The other part that I dislike is that the first passages in double stopping has been changed to single notes (letter C, International Edition). Those double stops are in the "cadenza", so why are they not in the original solo part ? And the only real cadenza is the flourish in the 4th bar before Letter E: the "cadenza" which comes later (10 bars before letter G) would have at least had a drone note playing in the background, much like a Vivaldi concerto: but there is another edition which has the accompaniment clearly spelled out. Playing that passage as a cadenza is a new trend with the younger fiddlers of today. But Hellmesberger also created cadenzas for the a minor concerto as well: this is why it just doesn't sound right to me. They use the cadenza to slow the tempo to make it easier. It SHOULD be difficult, like the Brandenberg #4. The spirit of Kolja's playing is quite excellent: it only needs a steadier tempo. Likewise, I REALLY appreciate his intonation. Too many "period" performers actually don't play with the corresponding intonation. It doesn't matter that the pitch is lowered: the notes are STILL going to be in the SAME PLACES on the fingerboard. The ones who play consistently out of tune (Monica Huggett, for one example) make the intonation into a total distraction. Kolja doesn't miss the intonation: and because of that, he deserves the higher accolades. I hate poor intonation because it makes you wonder how good the piece could have been if they'd just done some careful scales and double stops to get rid of the dissonances. Josef Gingold was teaching a masterclass at I.U. once and he asked "What is the #1 most important thing needed in great artistry?" I immediately replied "perfect intonation", but he ignored me and the rest of the class came up with a huge array of answers. Then, he announced it was "perfect intonation". How could it not be so ? If you want to play that out of tune, please switch to country music where you can put as much "English" on a note needed to get your grease going..... But I won't be tuning-in to hear it, excuse the pun.

Oh dear, you are totally crazy, deaf or ignorant. One of these three.
@gensoustudio62703 жыл бұрын
In period music we don't play everything in equal temperament, and the violin is especially not an equal temperament instrument, it is tuned in 5ths, so the notes are absolutely NOT in the same places on the fingerboard, you must adjust intonation based on your key, etc, to get purer intervals. Furthermore there is no such thing as perfect intonation and no violinist has perfect intonation because perfect temperament doesn't exist. This violinist has a well trained ear and adjusts their intonation to be in harmony with the rest of the ensemble, and no the performers are not perfectly in tune but they are plenty in tune with each other. Haven't really heard Monica huggett so maybe her playing is just as atrocious as you claim, but just because the official concerto was for keyboard doesn't mean the violinist needs to play with fixed notes.
