As music has always been a part of my life now for over 50 years, this is probably the finest sounding band that I have ever heard in my life! Such sheer depth with the lower brass, (and one string bass player) and the low woodwind instruments. Bravissimo!

@GreySarasa This is in fact a concert band. Most composers include parts for bass and harp in works for wind band; it's just that the supply of harpists and bassists is a lot smaller than trumpets and saxophones!

Come to think of it, even though no President of the US has assumed personal command of troops in the field since George Washington, and none has even threatened to since Zachary Taylor (in 1850); there must be laws on the books to cover the contingency. In that case, the President would assuredly be wearing the uniform of an officer of the highest rank. In any case, not relevant here. Were the President of the US to play in such an ensemble (if he could find the time), it would be as a civilian.

Actually Alto oboe;-FG I, it was originally called 'cor Englais' or English horn, by europeans owing to the fact that in England a few hundred years ago French horn players were scarce ,the Alto oboe or English horn, playing a `1/5 th removed from concert would often, easily take the place of French Horn Player/part..& so this practise was a quick solution-widespread gave rise to the Alto oboe being called, 'cor anglais'-English Horn. Most old scores refer..cor' Ang'l or something similar.

Michael L. you, of course have a right to your own comments. But, I disagree with your assessment that this performance is not great. I dare you to find a better concert band ANYWHERE! Coming from a musician who has an advanced graduate degree in music, and like Terry C.'s comment about having been "in the game" for awhile, (1979 in my case) trust me friend, it's the finest professional band that I've ever heard. Eastman School of Music's rendition of this work, (a very fine music school) and which can be found on YT pales greatly in comparison to the US Navy concert band's rendition. BTW, my father for years was a professional church organist for over 30+ years until his death in 1994. I heard him many a time play this classic Bach composition on the organ performing in his own concerts. If he were alive today and could listen to and watch this performance I guarantee that he would be impressed.

Excuse me Marco, my Statement Stands.!! You obviously do not understand that, which I posted.? It is very clear English. This is not popular theory !, in early years gone by in England,- the Alto oboe was used if there were no French horn players.Somebody had to play the Fr'Hrn part &the cor Anglais could read the Fr' horn part with very little effort. 40 yrs ago, I wrote/transcribed music proffesionally,& many times worked thro' the night for a Concert the next day,& we used whoever could do it.

Sorry guys - the tempo is too slow in many parts of the Toccata and of the Toccata-like parts in the Fugue. I know it´s hard for an orchestra but still ... Besides that: I hardly can hear an adequate phrasing. But that´s the salt and pepper in Bach´s music and it could be played even by a whole orchestra. If you are insecure about that - no prob - give me a mail and I´ll send you some suggestions for phrasing and articulation. - Anyway - love to see a brass band that cares for classical music. So thumbs up!

A few wrong notes, especially among the trumpets, and a lapse in the conductor's group coordination of the treble brass, suffering from a lack of sufficient sound projection and articulation. Overall, a decent performance, but it could have been better. As for Donald Hunsberger's arrangement, he suffers from leftover Hollywood-style addiction to 19th century overdoing of what could have been unaffectedly dignified Baroque interpretation. He needs further re-education in Baroque and Neoclassic styles of wind transcription.

O Marco !! you are not understanding, & I have 70 years Study behind me,stick to your theory instead of facts,if you must, I personally have books 150 to 200 yrs old, so how can you possibly be so silly as to try & diss me on this question.? Read up on 'Forsyth's Orchestration' .It does not matter a hoot, who made the first one,or where it was made,or who calls it what.-What counts is the continental musicians dubbed the Alto oboe the 'cor Anglais, because we used it in place of the Fr' Horn.
