I'd love to let you know that your extremely beautiful and moving violin of these Bach pieces stopped my neighbors twice. I was playing this video in my living room with my door open in two different days. Each day, different neighbors gently and politely knocked my door to say, "Sorry if we interrupted you, but we heard this classical music and had to figure out who's playing. " Both of them are of course classical music lovers. Most recent neighbors introduced themselves to me and said, ''You made our day with this beautiful music!'' I said, ''Great! Come and talk to me anytime when you hear his violin from my room with the door open. We're still handling the virus every day in different levels, but I wanted to share this story with you as your violin is magical! And I also have a Japanese origin - you're inspiring!

I think in fact that the music does not transport me to simpler, slower times. Instead, for me, it dissolves time and shows me the universality of human existence and experience. I hear in this music, affirmation that my troubles and terrors, and my angels, are the same as those experienced and so miraculously expressed by Bach. This music is time travel, and at the same time, the annihilation of time.

Assuming that these performances were recorded in single takes, their technical proficiency and supreme musicality are almost miraculous. Such purity of intonation on a modern violin is beyond most players, but on a baroque instrument with gut strings it is almost superhuman. But it is the sheer musical and humanity, as demonstrated by Sato's approach to embellishment, that is most impressive. I've heard many recordings and performances over the years, beginning with Milstein's never to be forgotten account of the third partita to Isabelle Faust's performance of all 6 at the Berlin Philharmonie a couple of years back, but Sato is in a league of his own when it comes to combining musicality with virtuosity, and these remain technically very demanding pieces (as can be judged by the hash many celebrated players make of them live).
@Fr_OE4 жыл бұрын
These are most likely not performed in single takes.
@boblon56934 жыл бұрын
I actually find barque instraments easier to bach well like this. Gut strings do take time to settel, but once they are there, they produce much better sound and seem to have so much more color to them than synthetic. I will say playing without a chinrest takes some getting used to. I personally just ended up putting one on my baroque violin for comfort reasons. Either way, modern instrents are harder to play bach on than baroque violins. baroque violins have flatter bridges and a different and lighter bow which makes bach mechanically easier to play. However baroque violins are not very condusive to romantic period music or anything paganini. Oddly enough it is a pretty good for fiddle music though a longer fingerboard is prefered.

Well said. I’ve only come across him a few months ago and I agree: he’s extraordinary!
@JL-fh4qw4 жыл бұрын
Hard disagree friend, I find Sato's choice of articulation and dynamics to be very sloppy and arbitrary, he makes decisions based on tonal characteristics of the instrument and not structure, it sounds entirely chaotic.
@boblon56934 жыл бұрын
@@JL-fh4qw True. I kind of like it that way though. But I do prefer the romantic period music more than baroque so that may come into play.

Sometimes the sonaten are recorded so 'close' The microphone right up to the instrument, like it's in a sound booth. This recording captures the three places I think music should reverberate: the instrument, the space, and then the ear.
@s.l57875 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. One should not have to focus on extraneous noise that an instrument generates and is more apparent when up close. That said, I'm not a huge fan of this recording. Why do Baroque musicians insist on taking even more liberal approach to rhythm than modern players? There's simply no historical justification and from a structural perspective, it does not represent Bach's structure at all. This interpretation is just pretty sound, the structure is non-existent. In fact, every time Sato rubatos is to precisely get more tone out of his instrument, which to me is very superficial and indulgent playing.

@pierfrancogangemi90045 жыл бұрын
@@vasccer3000 and Sea, the matter of respecting the rhytm is a general issue in the whole history of music. In my opinion one should consider the particular reasons to respect it or not, in the specific passagess and with the specific interpretations that the player gives of the thought of the author. In my opinion Sato emphasizes how the phrase flows with the bow movement. That, specially with a baroque bow, is absolutely correct, as Bach was totally aware of this effect and was utilizing it with expressive purposes. Maybe some other players are more histrions than interpreters: Sato is proportionate and correct.

I have to respect not only the quality of Sato's performance, but his mastery of the Baroque violin. In particular, the phrasing must be clear in order to avoid inadvertent accents and squeaks from the gut strings. Well done. Magnifique prestation...
