The original of this was written in Venice by Vivaldi for 4 VIOLINS and string orchestra. A few years later, Bach got hold of a copy of Vivaldi's Concerto for 4 violins & Orchesta and ARRANGED it so he (Bach) and three of his sons could play it, substituting HARSICHORDS for Violins. To do so he had to compose a lefthand part for each of the harpsichords. The Bachs played this Arrangement of Vivaldi's Cto at Zimmermann's Koffee Haus in Leipzig. Bach was the Director of Music for Leipzig for the four principal Lutheran Churches at the time. He moonlighted as Director of the Collegium Musicum (Friends of Music), a group that played weekly at Zimmermann's.

This is Bach's beautiful transcription of Vivaldi's 10th concerto in the L'Estro Armonico set, originally written for four violins, and it is a tribute by one great composer to another. Bach also transcribed the Vivaldi concerto Grosso for two violins and cello (L'Estro Armonico number 11) for the organ alone, which is an even more magnificent arrangement. Just some thoughts, I've always enjoy listening to classic music, but KZbin seems to be compressing the audio bitrate in every videos to around 128kbps AAC or 160kbps OPUS. As many already knew, 128kbps or 160kbps aren't enough for detailed music. Though KZbin's video guideline suggests uploaded video should have the audio quality set to at least 512kbps (which is a pretty good audio quality, balancing between minor music details and the size of the audio), what we hear afterwards will still be restricted to 128kbps and 160kbps. To be honest, KZbin's audio quality is completely okay for most music. Their compressing technique is very good many wouldn't be able to distinguish it between lossless file, but not for classical music, as higher bitrate does makes differences. Each instrument sounds different, and higher bitrate allows us to distinguish them and thus also makes each music piece be unique from each other. It will be better if Netherlands Bach Society can simultaneously upload their original recorded audio file to some places such as SoundCloud etc which accept lossless audio files such as .flac. Please don't start a war below please. This is just my grumble when listening to good music.

As I tried to say previously, Ameling sings perfectly on key. Her tone quality is superb, warm, & expressive. There is no better singer anywhere, especially of lieder-she leads the listener into a perfect world of lovely tone quality, intonation, expressiveness, text interpretation, fantastic understanding of the poet’s inspiration, she does not abuse her physiological assets- l believe her physical vocal cords should go with her into her older years without a wobble, without a slip in intonation. She projects a silvery vocal sheen that colors her legato singing (definitely superior to that of others with equal gifts & talent). Her tonal ease tend to promise she will not stress her physical assets, after all it’s the configuration of her vocal instrument that makes her a superior musician, & results in aural pleasure for her listeners.

I'm grinning like the guy in the audience at 3:02. I love the footage of the soloists' faces from 5:02 to 6:00 (particularly Tineke Steenbrink). And the overhead footage at various points is great. The camera work and editing of NBS is masterful, as deserved by the superb musicianship.

Ah yes. This piece is one example of the relationship Bach and Vivaldi had. They were born in the same year, though.

The part at 1:39 makes the violins sound like woodwinds! At least for the first few notes.

Thank you very much indeed for posting this splendid performance for so many of us who are scattered throughout the world with restricted movement. Such fine musicians, and so many strings to keep tuned together, especially those four temperamental harpsichords!! These are truly happy sounds which are ushering in hopefully a truly Happy New Year! Bless each of you and those you love. Best regards from Tennessee USA.

Amazing recording, wonderful perfomance. That is a great example of how to set up a professional gear in order to get a super high quality recording of baroque music. There are so many sound engineers whose simply destroy the audition of classical music by having a bad taste or even a severe lack of technique on recording a baroque orchestra.
