Few cool facts about this song. It was written by Barry Gibb but he decided to have Frankie Valli sing it because he thought people were getting burnt out on his vocals after Saturday Night Fever and Frankie and Barry sing in the same range. Peter Frampton is playing guitar. Frankie Valli didn’t even have a record deal when he sang this. He signed with Warner’s and this song sold 8 million copies.

This probably makes me sound REALLY old haha, but I actually saw this film at the drive-in with my family as a young child back in the late 70s when it was a new release. This opening song and title sequence is one of the most potent memories I have of that great period in time and it takes me straight back there. I remember playing on the drive in playground before the film started in my pyjamas. We then went to the candy bar for a choc top before settling in to the movie. I also saw Star Wars at the same drive in! Going to the movies was a big deal back then. At the cinema, there was always a short feature and then an interval before the main feature. Everyone clapped and cheered at the end of the film. This clapping stopped around the mid 80s when video stores became prominent.

LYRICS: I solve my problems and I see the light We gotta lovin' thing, we gotta feed it right There ain't no danger we can go too far We start believing now that we can be who we are Grease is the word They think our love is just a growing pain Why don't they understand? It's just a crying shame. Their lips are lying, only real is real We stop the fight right now we got to be what we feel Grease is the word Grease is the word, is the word that you heard It's got groove, it's got meaning Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion Grease is the way we are feeling We take the pressure and we throw away Conventionality belongs to yesterday There is a chance that we can make it so far We start believing now that we can be who we are Grease is the word Grease is the word, is the word that you heard It's got groove, it's got meaning Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion Now grease is the way we are feeling This is a life of illusion Wrapped up in trouble Laced with confusion What are we doing here? We take the pressure and we throw away Conventionality belongs to yesterday There is a chance that we can make it so far We start believing now that we can be who we are Grease is the word Grease is the word, is the word that that you heard It's got groove, it's got meaning - ahh groove and meaning Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion Now grease is the way we are feeling Grease is the word Is the word (5x)..............................

This montage was originally cut together for an entirely different song-- a 50's style song called GREASE. Paramount just had a big hit with the theme for the show "Happy Days" and hired the composer of that song, Charles Fox (he was also the composer of "Killing Me Softly"), along with lyricist Paul Williams (then the reigning Oscar winner for "Evergreen" from "Star Is Born") to write the period sounding song. That original version was in the movie right up till a few months before release when the Bee Gees song replaced it. That song is also on KZbin with the exact titles.

@Vanguarded_Heart 117 True, the director Randall Kleiser loved the 50's version by Charles Fox & Paul Williams, but the film's producer Robert Stigwood replaced it with "Grease is the word" written by his client Barry Gibb. 40 yrs later, it's hard to argue with the song's success, and the film in general's success-- but there was a lot of politics in the decision making, according to the film's musical director Charles Fox, in his memoir "Killing Me Softly - my life in my music". Fox and Paul Williams also wrote a ballad for the movie which was to be sung by Travolta, but the scene was cut from the film. Fox did produce every song on the album, other than the 2 new ones, but ultimately took his name off the film and left to do another Paramount film "Foul Play". The GREASE album became the biggest in Soundtrack history. At the Oscar's that year, Fox's hit song from Foul Play ("Ready to take a chance again" sung by Barry Manilow) was nominated against Olivia Newton John's hit song from Grease ("Hopelessly Devoted to you")-- but both lost to Donna Summer's "Last Dance", from the movie "TGIF"
