You know, originally there was no second moviment, only the first. That is why when Bidu Sayao recorded this Bachiana, she only did the first movement! At the time there was no second movement yet! Perhaps Villa should have left it that way?

This soprano is a well talented artist, however, it's almost impossible for a non-Brazilian to sing it properly. The poem of the 2nd movement is full of colloquialisms and unique expressions, plus its selected speed is Alegretto. It's a tough accomplishment.

I fully agree, as Davrath's performance is beyond exceptional, and I am sure that Ms Hannigan, who sings such easy scores as "Mysteries of the Macabres" (while conducting at the same time the orchestra), would be able to sing the second movement of these Bachianas.

I heard this as a child at a church neighbors house. I was 30 years later when i heard Laurindo almieda’s version on guitar with voice and i was reduced to tears in my car. I had to pull over and immerse myself into the remaining minutes. The melody had haunted my dreams and i would hum it occasionally. But hearing it on the radio that day ignited love for classical music again. So glad this song found me again.

O poema é de Dora Vasconcellos, amiga do Villa. É lindo, não? The poem is sung on the midle section, omited many times in comercial recordings for films etc... It's very hard to understand what they sing, there is ususally meny problems of pronunciation there! Even the great Bidu Sayao sang the midle section with a sort of, not totally, but sort of italian accent! When she recorded it with Villa Lobos, there was no second movement to the work, only the first! That is why she did not record it. Villa wrote the second piece only later. And it makes a fabulous contrast to the firs one. It goes a bit lika cavatina and cabaletta in the Verdi or Bellini operas, ok?

While it goes without saying that Hannigan is magnificent, it should also be noted that the cellists are also fantastic. The first player has a magnificent tone and follows the soprano wonderfully. So many comments imply that he can’t take his eyes off her because she’s so beautiful, but this totally misses the point. He’s the conductor of the ensemble, and follows her with an eagle eye and real sensitivity.

An eagle eye. I noticed that too! Right off. Something seemed off about this all, though she does certainly a fastidious job, the passion seems theatrical but not what this music demands, which is exposure of a bleeding heart. She mimes it, she puts it out and acquits it, but I still find it a little "phoned in". That may seem ungenerous, but there are so many things like that these days, where it falls short of the mark of the great music. I would probably not say that if she weren't a pretty imposing "looker" with a splendid appearance, but we see this everywhere now: instead of the greatness and grandeur of the music, such as this surely is, we see a lot of skin exposed by female soloists, whenever it is there for the looking, whenever it is of a certain easiness on the eyes. CD photos on the case have it absolutely all the time, an industry standard, it's obligatory. "J'en ai ras le bol!" If we need to study all that, there's always the beaches at St. Tropez! But seriously, the classical music biz --and I sang many concerts with one of the very best ensembles (TCO)-- has become such a drag of commodification and bottom line manipulations, and it surely carries over to the concert stage in these terms. You may see Hilary Hahn (and she may be one of the more demure) in a strapless dress with well-coiffed mane flowing over her shoulders while her body, and cleavage "zone", bobs and weaves in sync with her bowing. This is the contribution of MTV, where the emphasis is all on the image these days (decades), and not the music, and in supplementing the actual music often imperils the purity of the performance. ( I'm talking only about classical genre here, the MTV product is a totally lost cause, for all that.) Just farcical. These days, as a male, I always try to turn things around, the ol' switcheroo: what if a male soloist, piano, violin, or singer soloist, were to strut out in a "muscle shirt" from the gym, or tank top, and flex his muscles in various body-building poses while he played the music? Ridiculous. You would laugh yourself senseless. You would think it was a take on Professor Schickele in PDQ Bach mode, you would lose it in laughing unto tears. So, why are women accorded the double duty of playing great music and also fully primping whatever physical endowments they may have to add to it? Sure, they want to be gloriously presentable, but the mode today is to cross over into pandering. It's just so pathetic, and makes a mockery of the magnificence of the music, such as this great Villa-Lobos masterpiece. I think I'll sing it a capella, busking, et al. In modest attire. Maybe a tux!

Villa Lobos Tears start streaming down my cheeks before they even begin to play. I've been "around the block". I'm 70, my brother-in-law, master's and DMA from Northwestern, recently retired, after 34yrs as a cellist in the Denver Sym. My sister, full harp scholarship to Eastman School of Music, harp faculty at University of Denver, Denver first-call union harpist, etc, and my mother, Northwestern music ed and piano major honors grad and so forth was the family milieu. And I taught clarinet and sax for 35+yrs, sang 20yrs in the Milwaukee Sym. Chorus etc. It was a perfect performance, soloist and strings! She's amazing! I just ran across her a few days ago on KZbin!Unbelievable! Hope you had a similar responce! Wow, thanks
