« Vom Herzen ! Lovely to see the often under-rated Bass Stephen McLeod in more solos. I even prefer his "Mache dich" (Bach, St. Matthew) to dishy-voiced Per Mattei's rendition. The bass adds more solemnity. Lovely to see young performers, but alarming to see an audience that appears to be 90% Senior Citizens... As the young performers mature, who will follow them? Who will be their audiences? Beautiful and joyful... our youth need that!

I agree it is such a joyous piece (and I think this totally comes across- amazing performance!) but try singing the opening movement- it is extremely challenging to do well so I'm not surprised the performers might look serious- they're just focussing intensely! This piece is among the hardest of the Bach opening movements to sing out of all of his cantatas, partly because it is an adaptation of a virtuoso instrumental piece.

Simon Hunt Not so excellent, it is a modern trumpet, XXI century instrument, with holes, not the real original natural instrument, as played by Madeuf today, or the musicians of Bach times. It would be astonishing to see the same player playing the real deal, he is very good, but not excellent.
@simon123218 жыл бұрын
Henrique Silveira might consider the possibility that authenticity is not the only criterion for excellence. Madeuf does, remarkably, play almost in tune without holes and with a fine tone. The beauty of his playing is enhanced by its slight vulnerability. But is it authentic? I’m not sure. And, however much there may be authenticity of sound production, can we ever listen with authentic ears? No we cannot! Besides, I have a theory that Gottfried Reiche, who appears in a portrait holding a coiled trumpet, might have drilled into it one or two discreetly placed vent holes: thus he would have achieved the excellent tuning Bach would have liked. As we know from contemporary accounts, Bach insisted that his organ tuners allowed him to play a tolerable A flat major chord. We also know that he figured out a way of tuning his clavier in such a way that all keys were possible. Given his interest in tuning, I doubt he’d have formed such a high opinion of Reiche unless he was able to play Fs and flat As in tune, and possibly with even greater accuracy than Madeuf achieves without holes.

Edmund Spenser: the concept "in tune" is not absolute, it relates to temperament. I really love the natural harmonics outside the equal temperament, Bach wrote with that in mind. Moreover, there is no proof at all about holes in XVIII century. The holes produce a tune tamed for xxi century ears, including conductors, educated in equal temperament. I suffer a lot with the awful major thirds, including in the so called hip...

In the duet, the organist has been instructed to invent a counter melody to the cello melody composed by Bach which anticipates Bach's vocal lines. I can't stand that sort of clutter. All the organist should do is play the proper harmonies. What Bach wrote is entirely sufficient. The soprano is "reading" it through her fingers, by the way.
