“O Menschenkind” just one of the finest pearls the Thomascantor created. Impressed by the sublime tempo and the cohesion between the vocalists and instruments. I can’t stop to listen this wonderful Cantata again and again. Especially the two chorales with the spiritual organ and cembalo intermezzi. Great performance.

Indeed. Thanks to Jean-Baptiste Lully for the invention of this pleasing form. Bach realised its greatest potential in the 2nd Orchestral Suite, his last orchestral work.

What a stupendous performance of one of Bach's great masterpieces. Extraordinary on every level. For me Daniel Johannsen achieves the perfect declamation of the text, combined with effortless (but never facile) technique and amazing presence. I am a Bach specialist (having now performed and recorded 95% of Bach's harpsichord works) and recall the excitement of collecting all the performances of Harnoncourt & Leonhardt from the early 1970s (and working with many of their musicians over the years). That the next generation creates performances of this level of insight and quality, available in HD video to anyone online for free is an indication that the world, in some respects at least, is truly moving forward. Thanks (and bravo) to Prof. Lutz and also his amazing cast of musicians for this achievement. One other feature that is easily overlooked: the high quality of the large Italian-style harpsichord (with 4' register as well as the usual 2 x 8' - used here in the recitatives and the solo interludes between the strophes of the final chorale). This was a feature of Harnoncourt's earlier Concentus Musicus performances (of the secular works of Bach and Monteverdi especially). I wonder if we can know who is the builder? It is an exceptionally fine instrument and this makes a huge difference to the result

Wonderful comment. My father was a colleague of Mr. Lutz and involved in the "renaissance" of Baroque music of the 1970s-90s in Switzerland. Watching these recordings in the past year and listening to old recordings of my father I am floored by the flourishing of this art form over the past few decades.

That's the problem for classical music nowadays. The performers are young enough but the public is old. So the interest in high quality music will literally die out. The millenial public flocks to stupid and grotesque dance festivals where they can take drugs.

Well yes, there is the violoncello piccolo with 5 strings, but this is not used in this particular cantata. You might mean the violone , which is played by Markus Bernhard in this recording.

Excellent performance, as always. Thank you for sharing! The superb recording technique stands out as well. The alto part sung by a male spoils it for me. No disrespect to the gentleman - I am sure he is top in his class, but a female alto gives the part more warmth and is more flexible. And it sounds more natural.

1st performance: June 11, 1724 - Leipzig. It's not unusual to have 3 oboes in a Baroque orchestra. There are 3 oboes in movements 1, 5, 7, 8 and 11.
