Down south here, you can be sure of good weather if you can chase it, usually either side of the southern alps or north or south from home and sometimes when we leave for our summer break, we don't know where we are going and then we open YR (not the metservice) to tell us where we are heading. Keeps it interesting, but most importantly, dry

Summer always begins here when the schools go back, which I'm sure you know! There were some great glimpses of Simpson's Beach through the rain. It's a beautiful beach and was my first experience of 'freedom camping' as a uni student. We explored the Coromandel on our one-speed bikes, from Hamilton. No mean feat back in the very early '70s.

I find February is the best time for going on holiday by that time everyone is back at work, in the late 70's and early 80's i used to work through my Christmas and go for my holidays in February/March

You seemed to forget (in your planning) that it was school holidays) - esp for Tauranga. I've never seen kids wearing life jackets for a beach swim but not a bad idea looking at how murky the water looked. Shame about the weather but I'm guessing that helped keeps crowds away.

Damn... rainy weather is no fun for a beach holiday. My daughter got married at Simpson's Beach (my father-in-law used to have a place there). Many years spent there on and off.
