Many reports of near-death experiences sound positive and uplifting and blissful. Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli discuss those that are reported as distinctly negative and distressing. What happens in them, what do they mean, and what are their implications?

I really needed this episode now. I haven't had any NDEs but I am constantly falling ill and I was complaining about it instead of suffering patiently. I was frustrated with why God allowed this to happen. For some reason this opened my eyes to accept where I am now and abandon myself to God.

It is reported that St Jerome had a 'disturbing' NDE. In a letter he wrote he described the event: During the season of lent, whilst in a bodily weakened state, he was afflicted by a fever: this left him so ill that his whole body grew cold, and preparations were made for his funeral. In this condition, he is dragged before God’s judgement seat and professes to be Christian. He is told that he is no Christian but a Ciceronian (because he loved reading Cicero), ‘For where thy treasure is, there will thy heart be also’. The order is given for St Jerome to be beaten: as this is done, he cries out for mercy, and the bystanders also plead on his behalf. St Jerome swears that his experience was not sleep, nor an idle dream, and states that he felt the bruises from the beating for a long time afterwards. As a consequence of this episode he forswears pagan authors, gives himself over to the study of scripture and has undertaken fasting and night-time vigils, as a penance for his previous devotion to Cicero and Plautus. He admits to having previously preferred the secular writers to the scripture (which seemed ‘harsh and barbarous’ in comparison).

@@JimmyAkin I'd really like your opinion of Bill Wiese's vision of hell. It wasn't an NDE, but he fell down at 3:00AM while getting water and wrote a book called 23 Minutes in Hell and gives speeches by the same name. He doesn't seem dishonest he said he doesn't drink or do drugs or even drink caffeine and he gave up a 6 figure real estate company to talk about it and made no money touring to talk about it for the first 8 years if I remember the number correctly. He described it as unbearable - that he couldn't breathe, had no strength, demons were throwing him around and slashing his flesh and he couldn't believe he was staying alive through it and that 23 minutes felt like forever. He said Jesus told him to tell the world about it before he came to on his kitchen floor screaming. Like I said he doesn't seem like he's lying and we know Jesus doesn't lie, so I can't think He'd give a false vision, and it's been really unsettling to think some people would have to spend eternity like that. I don't really understand why we can't believe in annihilationism, too. It's bothersome.

Isn't a real nde when the heart stops and blood stops flowing to the brain? This area is the fascinating subject and even more amazing is when people a dead for a minute or two they get resuscitated and report going somewhere. But throughout history people have saw things but I don't know why you would call it a near death experience. You need to die for a minute. So did Saint Jerome's heart stopped for a minute or two and then he got resuscitated?

I know this episode is not about Sleep Paralysis, which I occasionally suffer from, but it is a terrifying sensation of knowing myself asleep and being unable to awaken. Because of my own sleep paralysis experiences, I knew where you were going with the end of this. When i am unable to awaken from a dream, the One Thing that will overcome it, is when I manage to make myself begin Praying. Usually the Lord's Prayer, sometimes the 23rd Psalm. (i've been christian for many years, going thru rcia right now; my expectation for future is that additional Catholic prayers will also help.)

Most vivid sleep paralysis I had were having my face Holden by a extremely dark huge skeleton thing I felt it and saw it , and having the feeling of my mom walking around my bed or entering my room although she is not home. And wierd thing is she sees a person who died at her work place and the owner confirmed with pictures it was the previous owner who she sees walking around sometimes. I thank the experiences since they just reassured me of God

I met a guy at my job, and he had gangster tattoos on his face and neck, and he told me he used to live the gangster life down in LA, then he said he got shot and died. He said that when he died, he had a feeling of utter darkness and felt hell around him. He said that he was brought back to life and became a Christian. He said he left LA and his gangster life and now lives for Jesus.

1975? That's the year I was born. Well, I have been in three car accidents. One due to falling asleep at the wheel and rolling the car. I didn't lose consciousness. The second was when my father was driving and was distracted at an intersection and the car was sideswiped. Third, I was foolish enough to be distracted by changing music on a phone and I collided with a semi and was seriously injured. I did lose consciousness briefly off and on until I was at the hospital and they sedated me. I never experienced anything supernatural. This has not affected my beliefs about God, the Church, or His angels and saints. Aside from surgeries and injuries, I recovered quite well, thanks be to God. It is very true that He can take very bad circumstances and bring a greater good out of it. Thanks for praying for me as I will for you.

What you mentioned about scruples at the beginning is very true. I used to obsess about Hell as a youth and wondered if I was the one person who could not be saved. I didn't know about religious or regular OCD at the time. I still struggle with scrupulosity, but knowing how to deal with it mitigates the control it has over me - because I go to God in confidence. Having a prayer life is important. If you are used to praying you are more likely to consider calling out to God during an NDE or even a negative life experience. I am so happy that you mentioned the toll houses. I doubt the purgatory part since one must be judged before being purged (the souls in purgatory know that they are saved). Thank you for covering this wonderful and intriguing topic. God bless.

I had an NDE and I had the outbody experience although it was not frightening or delightful it is unforgettable because it is unique. Now about the negative NDE I had an experience but I will say this was an Inside body experience that started as very frightening out of nowhere and I was no asleep I was pretty much awake but suddenly I was able to perceive evil it will come from humans it did not come from images or sound but it was a terrifying feeling like all evil became air and surrounded me and to avoid that feeling I will turn my head away from the people it was in my room and avoid watching TV but the evil will start to come out of the walls There was when I thought I am screwed there's no way I can scape this so I stopped fighting in I stopped Avoiding it and I started to observe like becoming brave and staring to face the darkness or the evil it's when everything will start to turn around suddenly the evil transform in light like the energy of love it was so amazing what I saw after that fighting experience that I thought I wouldn't mind to go through it again because I know after that I will feel the opposite the light of love and perfection. Maybe it's not an NDE but it is a unique experience where my senses opened to perceive the whole spectrum from terrifying to Devine and its so hard to explain the contrast but they exist.

I had a death experience. It was sudden. I went to a foggy place with hoards of people. There were people surrounding Mr there were all soaking wet . There was fog and all the people were dressed the same with long white gowns like people wore long ago to sleep in. They were all wet due to the air it was very foggy and humid but cold. So they were cold and wet the and people were grabbing at me saying help me . I was scared, everyone was in black and white like in a photo.i was scared. Suddenly a woman stepped forward and she was in color. All she did was to put her hands on my waist and said that I didn't belong there. She lifted me up and I was then back in my body. I assume I was in hell or purgatory. What does this mean. I have felt extremely ashamed. Not what I expected

I was riding in my car with my husband driving. We had just went out to eat and we're going home. About 10 miles from home something went south in my head I said to my husband, something's not right. I went into flight mode. I tried to get out of the car. I was yelling that it's going to get me. He didn't know what was going on and I just couldn't stop myself. Yelling something's happening, I gotta get out of here. We finally reached the driveway and I said I gotta throw up. That's all I remember til that place I went to. My husband was having to watch me die 3 times. I had grand mal seizures and stopped breathing all three times. When I was back in my body and opened my eyes, I saw Jesus or what looked like Jesus but he was smiling. I thought why are you smiling at me when I just went to hell. I closed my eyes and opened them again and there was my husband. He got me out of the car and I immediately told me I had a dream. He said I got something to tell you also. I slept for hours and then it was time to talk about what happened to us both. He said babe, you were dead.

Distressing NDE's are not something most people want to hear about it. The people who went to Hell understandably do NOT want to admit it , let alone talk about it. Can you blame them? So many people don't think that Negative NDE's exist, and /or Hell doesn't exist. They are wrong. People have experienced Hell and or negative NDE'S.

Negative NDEs seem to go against positive NDEs where the experiencer comes to learn that there is no judgement, that you can’t do anything so wrong in life that you wouldn’t still be loved and accepted by God or Source who loves unconditionally. People who didn’t have faith or who lived bad lives found themselves welcomed with open arms. Inconsistent messages from NDEs.

48:00 My grandfather had an NDE. He was a worker at a power plant in St. John NB. He was electrocuted and his heart stopped for 5 minutes or so as the other workers tried to restart his heart. He saw himself come out of his body, then saw a flash of blue light, then was on top of a beautiful valley with a light in the middle of the valley. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen and he wanted to be with it forever. A blue light flashed and he was right next to the light now. Then he saw flowers beneath the light. He knew they were his wife and kids. Then he knew he had to go back, and he was sad because he would have to leave and go back to this life. My mother told me this story when I was 8 years old, and I was always struck by my grandfather's sadness. Later on in University, I could put words to that sadness, when I read Saint Augustine's confessions - Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee. God is the fulfillment of all our desires. And he rightfully claims our love above any other love.

A lot of nde influencers on YT only report the positive "no judgement", "everything is fine", "religion lied to me" experiences, and don't want to talk about these. When I recovered I was scared of the darkness. I found it to be deeply disturbing. I was very troubled at the time. I had attempted to end things only a month before I got mugged. I had a lot of self loathing and other issues. The gift I received from this time is I lost all self loathing. I was still deeply troubled by that darkness, but I found light. No thank you, I will not give my opinion, Sam-I-Am. I thank you sincerely for the advice given in the final portion of the podcast, especially the bits about the reason we mustn't lose hope for the souls of the departed whom we personally know, and most particularly for the attitude of disinterest in the numbers who go to heaven, purgatory, or hell, as given in the passage you highlighted. I do know someone whose heart stopped and was clinically dead for a period of time. This was not a very lovable person. When the person's adult child asked what happened during the time of clinical death, the person snapped, "Nothing." And no more was said. I had a sense that the person did experience something unpleasant just by the tone of the dismissal. But I had always prayed for the salvation of this person's soul, as I myself can be judged harshly for my own sins, and hope someone prays for my salvation. The person did become more pleasant after that, but reverted, which, upon looking back, I now understand to be the beginning of the dementia that ultimately led to the person's actual death. I prayed the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy in the person's presence, while sitting beside the death bed. I have hope that this person, as a beloved child of God the Father, is or will be with Him for eternity in heaven. God doesn't make junk, so no matter what my feelings about the person or the troubles caused by the person's actions, the fact that God, Who created the highest mountains and deepest oceans, decided the world needed this person too, is good enough reason to intercede on behalf of this soul. Jesus died for this person, suffering worse pain than I can imagine to save this soul, and so for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, may God have mercy on this soul and on the souls of all the faithful departed.

Sometime in the past month, I saw a video online of someone who claimed they left the faith after a negative NDE. They heard others having positive experiences, and hers was negative. She concluded it was because of her faith believing in ...well, I didn't watch most of the video, but I think it was the belief in Purgatory or similar. Those who didn't believe in that seemed to have a good NDE experience. I kept thinking it was foolish to leave based on that. If it was a real experience, then it should have been a warning to change in ways to avoid that fate. If it was just something in her mind, then it may have no bearing on her actual afterlife. Likewise, those with positive experiences could also be just in their minds, or they may be on the right track in terms of how they live their lives. The poor conclusion led me to not bother watching much of the video, and I only watched enough to get a sense of why the NDE led her away. It was sad.

All NDEs are incomplete experiences because the person did in fact return to life and did not irrevocably reach the afterlife. It may be true that DNDEs would resolve to good ones, but it’s also possible that the ones that initially appear pleasant could turn into a bad experience if it had been extended longer. We don’t know for a fact that these experiences directly correspond to the person’s eternal destiny.

Except some NDE experiences describe that they are in a place of eternal bliss, peace and happiness, being one with the universe and/or God, etc, a perfect place where they are want to stay but are made to go back. Sounds like they were at the “end destination” but were sent back. As afterall, being one with everything, knowing and understanding everything, feeling infinite love and peace, it’s hard to see this as “incomplete” or to imagine there is something above this or beyond this. But, perhaps there might be.

I was Swedenborgian before becoming Catholic. I started to read his book on Heaven and Hell, and the description of his dark tunnel with caves and scary things inside the caves scared the fluff out of me. I never returned to that book, and I avoided any further discussion about it. But his description and my dread has lingered for 20 years. Normally I listen to your show as soon as it’s released, but it took me 2 days to work up the courage for this topic. And as I listened, I thought Emmanuel Swedenborg’s description was much like the lady who saw the wells. And by the end of the episode, my mind was finally at ease. Thanks, Jimmy and Dom. This episode was definitely a public service announcement, and I truly appreciated it.

My mom had a what I suppose was an NDE after she choked at a restaurant and was unconcious for several minutes. She would likely have died had the customer at the next table not been an EMT who was able to get an ambulance there immediately and perform CPR while they waited. Anyway, she told me she was suddenly in a beautiful filed of rolling hills, and walked up to a bench where my sweet Grandpa was sitting. My mom and grandpa, who had died some 10-15 years before, were extremely close, and my mom was so happy to see him and hold his hand again. They sat there for a while enjoying the sun on their faces and the beautiful view, and then my Grandpa said, "It's not your time. You need to go back." My Mom somewhat regretfully left Grandpa, and woke up in the hospital.

Amazingly balanced and rational treatment of distressing NDE’s. So many more new age commentators on NDE’s want to quickly explain them away as if they couldn’t call into question any of their core beliefs, such as “there’s no judgement” or “nothing is ultimately right or wrong, good or bad.” Then there are the evangelical interpreters of NDE’s who want to show they “prove” every bit of their theologies or biblical interpretations. Honestly, when it comes to understanding and interpreting NDE’s there seems to be very little, even from many experiences themselves, that isn’t just immediately off on some unjustified tangent. This discussion was a pleasant surprise. Thank you!

That visions are rarely, if ever literal and are intended to convey something. Take the visions of the passion in which Jesus is shown to have his spinal column exposed. Not only does the shroud not show this, but it would be a physical impossibility. Plus, a flagum, the flogging device that the romans used, doesn't tear the flesh. But apparently it actually is more painful that the tearing of flesh.

My brother-in-law (BIL) had four (4) tours of duty during the Viet Nam War. He was a career NCO. He was crusty but lovable. He didn’t attend Church. He was not informed about medical procedures. I’m a Registered Nurse (RN). My BIL had a massive heart attack in an Emergency Department and his heart had stopped for 4 minutes. My BIL recounted to me that during this time, he floated out of his body and was hanging out by the ceiling. He gave me specific details about the medical procedures that were being performed on his body. He said that he felt warm and saw a bright light. As he was going towards the light he was slammed back into his body. He said that from that moment on that he was not afraid to die.

Before my nde caused by a heart attack in 2018 where I have been taken to Heaven I had a vision of Hell, before the Gates from inside. I could not believe what I saw as my normal dream just changed to the vision. My role in the vision was just to watch so I was moved/carried above the vast crowd of people gathering before the Gates of Hell trying to get out. No chance at all for no one. Some upper parts of the Gate looked already damaged - must have been some giant demon or something to reach that high. And it stood in white white-blueish flames so that no one could touch it. I was hovering above the people till I recognized some face down there. It was my ex's father who used to be an atheist. He stared at me and looked very desperate and beaten, and sad and absolutely broken with tears in his eyes, but I could not do a thing for him but watch. Couple of years he died.

Hi, I'm seeing this a month later. I did the same. I was Christian and lost my faith and became an athiest and then worse. I've come home to my catholic faith and experience so much love and forgiveness from God. I'm not an expert but I wanted to give my opinion in case it helps. I've heard lots of NDE stories and a few are from other faith perspectives but my faith has been Christianity. We don't know the outcomes of any of these since every person obviously comes back. As a religion, Christianity is the only one where God reaches for us. All others are people trying to find God by their own effort. As Christians, we rely on the grace of God thru Jesus. I personally have felt overwhelming love from Jesus-God since I've been back and I think everything else is a pales in comparison. I shamefully admit I searched for years to find another God and worshipped other God's in my past but I have never experienced anything like the peace, joy and love that I experience in my Christian faith. Everything else seemed hollow and I only experienced temporary peace etc. My advice is to pray to Jesus if you were a Christian before. Ifyou're Catholicc, go to confession and receive the eucharist at mass. I know God is just waiting for you to come home. The love I felt was overwhelming, and I sobbed with joy in the presence of God for years afterwards. He loves you and can't wait for you to come home. Please know I will pray for you and I wish you all the best. God bless you. I love you because he loves you so much ❤ Hugs
