Apparently for tribute effs that cards you control it doesn't care if its face up or face down.

I don't want to be that guy but, if a head judge told you that, he was incorrect. Name checking in this game isn't required to be public information to resolve card effects unless the card requires it in some way.

a face down monster can always be used for a tribute, regardless if it's cost or part of the effect, including effects which tribute for a ritual summon. It can also be used as a fusion material. Viceversa, if the cost is to, say, banish a monster with specific conditions on field a face down monster can't be used, even tho it's cost.

Followup with set Chamber from detached Sharvara + Contract for discard. other: set Contract, pop with Sharvara, Yama summon another Sharvara, make Caesar, overlay into Machinex for 3 succ.
