Wearing the right quality gear saved my brother's life when he should have died when a car pulled out on him. He had a broken neck, snapped thigh bone and several other broken bits. He was wearing proper armoured leather suit and gloves, boots and a good Arai helmet which actually cracked at the chin section. His Yamaha R6 had banana front forks and a smashed engine which was just hanging in the frame. People reading this will know to have good gear already. It really puts a shiver up the back of my legs when I see people riding in shorts and T-shirt.

Grandad's helmet was clearly a little difficult to talk about, but really did illustrate a very important point, so thank you and well done for that. As you say, never trust a helmet you don't "know". Bikes scare the crap out of me, but a helmet really is a crucial bit of safety kit, not to be messed around with.

My first bike was a Honda ss50 for the price of £35. I swapped a flick knife for a full face helmet with no visor, fun in the rain squinting like mad. An old belstaff wax jacket that I loved and a scarf from the back of dads wardrobe. I went everywhere flat out and loved every minute apart from the soakings in the rain and the ice.

I work in a motorcycle shop and tell people this stuff all the time, most listen but some are like 'yeah but your a salesman, you would say that'!. Airoh Valor is a 5 star sharp rating lid we sell, might not be the quality or plushness of an ARAI but they're £125 not £500 plus. And I concur with the others, more bike content please.🏍

Interestingly Arai used to have a department, possibly the racing department who would check a crashed lid for damage. They x rayed the shell for fractures and removed the painted surface for a visual inspection and tested the polystyrene liner for signs of compression. They did this for me, foc I think and proclaimed it safe to continue using. I had lost the front and had a more slidey kind of accident so, not a big impact 😊.

I have worn either a shoei or an arai helmet for the last 35 years the quality generally goes right down their range so you don’t have to spend the £600 to get vents that work and the plush feel. I couldn’t agree with you more about buying from a shop rather than online as I found that the shoei GT air didn’t fit me but the rf1200 did and I have never found an AGV that fits my head shape which is inconvenient if you have to keep sending them back. Last tip don’t keep your gloves in your helmet Velcro will rip the liner apart and you sweat enough just from your head without adding what is on your gloves to the mix.

Great content, I would certainly love to see and hear the Triton. I stick to the rule that the helmet is due for replacement after 5 years, if in daily use (300 days+) per year, to account for wear and tear to the interior fittings and exposure to Uv. Mainly though the washing of the interior is difficult, so I bin it when its smelly. I have never bought an Arai, maybe a replacement interior would be more cost effective. Top tip - if you handle the fuel pump with gloved hands, avoid storing them in the helmet, most soft interiors do not like fuel contamination. Looking forward to another 2 wheeled episode.

Excellent advice, I look forward to your future bike vids, one thing that doesn't get mentioned very often is ear protection, I think it's important to where ear plugs as hearing loss is not noticeable and never recovers, for a couple of quid foam ear plugs are essential for me..

Welcome back to the bike world, James. Great summary of helmet dos and donts. One thing I'd add is that - even if they are just for display - cut one or both straps out of the defunct helmets to ensure they never get used again. Also, Arai are famous for building the best helmets they can, for any rider, with no special helmets made for bike or car racers. They set one standard for all. More motorcycle content please!

Great video. Your lid is vital. MCN did a great article on the safety markings and fakes. I won’t even sell my old helmets and if I’ve ever dropped one it’s immediately consigned to a hook in the garage and never used again!

That's some very good advice regarding helmet age and to always buy one in person. I'm personally more of a Shoei guy as it fits my head better. Both are great brands and both are indeed hand-made in Japan.

I just replaced my seven years old Shoei GT Air with a Scorpion-EXO R1 Air Carbon. It's ECE 22.06 rated, same as your Arai, fits perfectly, feels incredibly lightweight, is feature-packed and looks stunning. It even has good old double-D rings, not one of those bulky and annoying ratchet things!

Good content Jay. The age of a helmet thing I do believe is down to an number of issues regarding the degradation of the lining and probably the shell too. Like UV rays externally but internally things like hair products, whether you wear a balaclava so no direct contact with the lining, storing dirty gloves in the helmet when not being used. As mentioned in a number of the comments obviously pricier helmets will be more plush but not necessarily safer and the fit/ weight should be a major consideration. I wear Shoei but the quietest and lightest was an AGV K5 but the internal visor was pants and broke repeatedly and was repaired under warranty 3 times: put me off buying another. Please give us more bike content, top bloke 👍🏻

I’ll be interested to see some bike content. I got back into it last year after about 25 years out of the saddle. I’m now doing track days on a Panigale SP2 and have a SportClassic from 2006 for the road. Totally different experiences and great fun.

Just bought a new Shoei size L to replace my (ahem, 10 year) old Shoei size XL - both fit great. Shop-bought so I was able to try it on and get the right size, which wouldn't have been the case had I bought online. Shoeis seem to fit me well, and iirc they're a shade less expensive than Arais. And yes more bike content please

Not a biker myself but have been interested for a while. 29 years old now and been into cars since I was thought of. Bought my first helmet recently for a car track day, also from J&S (St Albans). Cannot recommend them enough. Went for a bike focused full face helmet with the expectation I will go ahead and get my licence in the next year or so. Your helmet is the kind of thing I was looking for (a spiritual successor to the design of my karting helmet from when I was a kid). I ended up going with a carbon fibre Scorpion exo 1400 which I've just checked and does appear to comply with the ece 22.06 standards you mentioned so that was nice and around the £300 mark. The track day went fantastically (mx5 owners club takeover weekend at Blyton) and fortunately the helmet survived to try another day! Looking forward to seeing some bike content from you!

It really is a different world that is very hard to understand unless you actually experience it (sounds snobbish but its kinda true). Good vid James! I’m the proud owner of a couple of Arais myself. Have tried other brands but they just seem to fit me best! A wee tip here, be careful putting your gloves away inside your lid! The Velcro closures on your gloves can stick to your chin strap and destroy it’s integrity eventually! Can’t wait for the bike vids!👍😊❤️

I originally had no head protection at all but then bought a Kangol open face in the early 70's once wearing a helmet became a legal requirement. In the later 70's I upgraded to a Bell full-face which were the dog's danglies back then but don't seem very common any more. I currently have a budget Frank Thomas but the best thing about it is that it has a built in flip down sun-visor, something which had not been invented back in the 70's. I didn't wear glasses when driving/riding back then but do now so having the flip down is a real blessing. I've subscribed now that you're onto bikes. I’ve been following the main channel for a while and didn’t know you had that much experience. Awesome! Time to substitute one of the 4 wheeled vehicles for one with 2. 😎 Sound advice about helmet fitting and the like. I’d go as far as to say if the person at the shop doesn’t engage with your ‘best interests’ at heart, walk away. You want to be able to if the worst happens. Police are getting hot on dark visors so a sun visor is a must. Along with a lid that’s quiet so you can enjoy the ride.

Some good advice given. Rode bikes from 16 to 44, moped to Fireblade and then stopped until a couple of years ago - now 64. Always wore a Shoei as they were the perfect fit although Arai were regarded as the better helmet. So skip forward 20 years and I now have a Arai because it fits perfectly and Shoei’s don’t. Either my head shape has changed or their helmets have but always try before you buy.

The helmets have changed, it used to be you either had an Arai shaped head or a Shoei, I recently tried a Shoei, they now seem to fit just like my Arai did, so of course I bought an HJC...

I believe the perfect helmet is the HJC RPHA10 or 11 - I absolutely love them. However, after owning both & going through literally tens on visors, I now ride in an Arai Profile-V. I believe HJC have a RPHA12 in the pipeline & I really hope they put the new visor lock on it (like the RPHA-1 has). If they do & it's priced right, that'll be a strong contender for my next lid...

Bought an Arai in 1980’s when they first came yo UK. Saved my head when I hit a french truck in 1982. My Schuberth saved my head when I crashed in Kazakhstan in 2019 (part of my two up round the world trip). Just bought new C5 Schuberth which is the new ECE 22.06 standard like your Arai. Echo everything you have said about buying from a shop so you can try different brands and get sizing right.

Great vids. Liked and subscribed 👍. These days I prefer a decent open face helmet. Most of my riding now is slow speed and a lot of it is in town traffic. For me, the extra visibility provided by an open face helmet is a safety feature in itself. But it's all about balancing risk and I completely understand those who prefer some chin protection. That said, my current helmet (Shark Nano) has an extended visor which covers the entire facial area and actually tucks in under the chin when fully lowered. I always renew my helmet every 3 to 5 years as long as it's not been in an accident or dropped - when I'd take it out of service immediately.

Nice. I started riding motorcycles again last year, after an absence of over 40 years... Hardly ever use my car these days, 80% of all my travels (including commuting) are on 2 wheels. On the subject of helmets: I just got myself a Shoei NXR2. Also ECE 22-06, very basic full face helmet, very light weight. By the way, many experts state that a drop on the floor from let's say saddle height does not really damage the helmet...

My Arai saved me from serious injury when together we slid down the road surface with my still running Harley Davidson for over 60 feet! I recall thinking how uneven asphalt really is as I bounced along it. I was basically ok & being under my bike that was saved too. On our ride out, the 97F sunny day in 2010 had melted the road surface. Luckily I was wearing proper Kevlar riding pants & jacket. No-one else was wearing proper gear. Two girls had on bikini tops & shorts and they refused to go any further after seeing me. I stopped riding a year ago as I wasn’t enjoying it so much. I sold my 2017 very heavy bike, but I fancy a lighter bike again.

Great and important video. Age is not your friend when it comes to helmets. A good helmet will be, and should be expensive. I have quite a few as mementos now. If you are going to race, you always need a replacement handy. Not if, but when.My youngest brother got a new bike sometime back and asked me for one of my old helmets. He got mad when I told him no, it wasn’t safe. I told him to go to a shop and ask to get fitted. Shortly after, he was run over and dragged underneath a company suv, operated by a drunk employee who attended an open bar Christmas party. My brother has some brain damage as a result, but a new, properly fitted helmet saved his life. I recently reminded him that he had two shit helmets he has been riding with, so he bought a nice brand new one.

The whole thing about dropping your helmet and then it's done is a myth. It's not an airbag it will be fine with that kind of impact. Just don't do it a lot.

Had a few years of dry, but last year I bought a new bike - if someone wants to know, a gorgeous Z650RS - and just recently I startet to Look for new bike gear. Ordered Yesterday some Goldtop gloves and for the helmet currently deciding between a Shoei Glamster or an Arai Concept-X. Side Note: Your shed has potential for a nice Workshop / filming Studio. I'm not a bike guy but as I ran out of room for cars I recently restored a Kawasaki KT-250 bike and am working on a Velocette Noddy bike. I only ride around our garden and maybe the neighbours farm (and ride slowly!) but I figured a proper helmet was a good idea so I got an open face Bell. Definitely agree there was no way I could buy that online so off to a shop where they were super helpful and let me try many things. If I ever actually decide to get a bike license so I can ride on the road (unlikely) I would definitely get a full face helmet.

Excellent point about using "unknown" helmets! As you've so aptly demonstrated it's impossible to tell if a helmet is still safe to use just by looking at it. It's the main reason you really should never use second hand helmets. Motorbike helmets are DESIGNED to flex during an impact with the internal padding taking up some of the force of the colision. The outside of the helmet can then look perfectly unmarked and undamaged, but the internal padding has done it's job, it's now compressed and useless in that part of the helmet, so should you have another impact in the same place you'll far far less protection than if the helmet was new.

When I learnt to ride, the instructors always said NEVER store your gloves inside your helmet! Also for fit.... they always say you are either an Arai shaped head or a Shoei shaped head...!!

I second the comment about not storing gloves inside the helmet. If you have velcro straps on the gloves it will stick to the inside and can ruin the lining over time. Also, your gloves will be covered in all the dirt and dead flies as you ride which is then transferred to the lining and then your head, not nice. The first time you see the dirty water flowing out of the lining when you wash it will change your mind on where to store them.

Wow prices really have soared since 3sy back when , I paid 200 for my Aria and similar money for my Shoei . It would be far too expensive to get back into biking unfortunately though it has been niggling away since watching these and a lot of other biking info videos recently. Very smart lid btw . 600 bar , ouch !!

Well, today’s Arai’s will structurally survive a drop from a bike seat just fine, the fancy vents may well take the brunt of the damage though, but they are replaceable, and they aren’t expensive. The reason helmets may have been toast in the past is because the shells weren’t tough enough to not allow the medium density stuff below to deform, but that is not the case today as the shells are more ridged and the medium density foam is designed to deform inside, not at the shell side so much. It’s also different density around the helmet giving better all round protection than ever, but that’s another story. They are hand made in Japan by a company that cares more about safety than anything which is why they are expensive and why they protect their pricing - they are expensive because they are expensive to make! If you are unsure if your dropped or lightly damaged Arai is still safe, Arai will also inspect a suspect helmet for you and give it an ok… or not. Most light damage is only cosmetic. When it comes to those test stickers, you don’t see the MotoGP logo because Arai doesn’t use an internal rotational slip system. They claim the shape of their helmet means it would rarely ever hit anything straight on, glancing off of objects, and the same shape allows it to spin - all the vents are designed to come away easily on impact and not snag too.

Not trying to critique, but the “if you drop your helmet, it’s toast” is a myth. Since there’s no weight inside it, it puts no real pressure on the EPS liner. Save yourself some money and inspect it instead to ensure there’s no damage inside. It’ll likely be fine, and you’re otherwise just throwing away hundreds of dollars.

I worked with a born again biker a couple of years ago, in his 60's, thought his old lid would be ok. It was from the 80's!!!! It weighed almost 3kg. I was new to biking so he didn't listen to my opinion, bcos what would I know, I'd only sat through HOURS of KZbin bike channels talking about helmets, spec's, fitting, as well going into dozens of shops talking with staff etc... I'm also the proud owner of a Quantic, one of the few Arai's I can fit my enormous head into, 62.5cm fits into the XL. Fun fact about the ECE2206 rating, Arai didn't have to do anything different to meet that testing standard, their helmets already exceeded the newer higher standards testing!
