Last time I drove the back road actually taking my grandmother, mother, sister and girl friend around the island we went from Kihei back to Kihei. The road will bring you to up country near Kao kao Park where we got married. And then back then there was a road that you could take that was a dirt road down to McKenna area. Then back to Kihei. That was only the last time I drove it actually drove on it many times and I drove around the other side of the island as well just going to different beaches hiking in different areas just enjoying my time on the Island. Originally moved there in December of 1980. Spent a total of about five years on Maui loved every minute of it

Is this the reverse route to Hana?

Yes it is! If you are doing a one day trip to Hana and taking this route, I suggest you leave very early in the morning ☺️

I kidnapped my family and brought them on a drive around the island about 20 years ago. I found it interesting. They were pretty mad at me by the end of the long day.

I too (mom) do all the planning, so I understand, lol. I'm sure it's a funny story now when you guys talk about it, these type of trips are usually the most memorable. Have fun travelling and stay safe!

Here is the GPS coordinates of Kalahaku Overlook: 20.736812, -156.233905 Road to Hana have a lot of stops and it takes a full day to finish, I don't think you can do both on the same day. Kalahaku Overlook is inside Haleakala National Park, you can do this and watch sunrise or sunset at the Haleakala Observatory. Hope that helps. Have fun and safe travels!
