Back Seat Flying In The Bonanza V35B

I love my SR-22, but when asked to tag along in my friend's V35B, I jumped at the chance.
On every flight, I learn something new. Especially when I sit in the back seat. I totally disconnect from the PIC role, and focus what the PIC and right seat pilot are doing.

Hey. I have a quick question: Would you recommend a Cirrus SR 20 as a first A/C? I have my CPL and had my IFR with twin -engined ratings though I have not flown in a long time. 230 hours TT! So assuming I get back to it and grab ten to fifteen hours on a 172 to dust off the skills, would a transition to a SR 20 be recommended? Thank you.

I am not one to suggest one airplane over another for the situation you describe. I suggest focusing on your mission. How will you be using the airplane? What destinations? How far? How fast do you need? How many passengers? And of course, how much plane can you afford. The SR20 is a great airplane for the right mission. When I bought my SR22 (with partners), my wife wanted a plane with a parachute. That limited my choices, but I loved the SR22 and that's what she was used to. We have flown in a Bonanza and she likes that too. As you get back into it, don't limit yourself to the 172, although that's obviously a great airplane too. Really focus on the ultimate missions and let that drive the type of plane. Maybe break it into some segments. Less than 180 Horsepower, vs 180- 235 Horsepower, vs 235 - 310 Horsepower. How many seats (4 or 6), how much weight it carries, etc. Sounds like fun. Let me know if I can answer anything else for you.

Commonly referred to as a "hood", pilots will wear a "view limiting device" which prevents them from seeing outside the airplane, so they can practice flying solely by reference to the instruments. In order to do that, it is required to be good weather and they must have a certificated pilot in the seat next to them to watch out for other airplanes or dangers, all in the spirit of safety. This kind of practice is essential, as flying in the clouds or with limited visibility is a skill that is perishable. Only Instrument rated pilots are allowed to do that, but if you don't stay proficient, even instrument rated pilots can have fatal accidents if they aren't at the top of their game.
