This episode was produced in partnership with The Gettysburg Museum of History. See how you can support history education & artifact preservation by visiting their website & store at www.gettysburgmuseumofhistory...
One of the keys to the Allied success on D-Day rested on the shoulders of the paratroopers who were tasked with securing the flanks of the area of operations in Normandy. Unfortunately, some of those C-47s carrying those men over the channel were hit with anti-aircraft fire and crashed before any of the men could make the jump. In this episode, we're joining Erik Dorr of the Gettysburg Museum of History to visit the exact spot where a C-47 carrying a stick of paratroopers from Easy Company, 506th PIR (Band of Brothers) crashed in the early morning hours of D-Day.

I have such days regularly, reminded by the tattoo on my arm of the six Australian diggers who died on my watch in Afghanistan in June-July 2010. I think of them all the time, the diggers (soldiers, and sailors and airmen) of the past from my own family and those they served with. I think of the allies from the US, UK, Canada, South Africa, India and beyond who laid down their lives, not for flags or glory but in defence of those who could not defend themselves, those who did not ask to fall under the heel of tyranny and for the man to the left and right of them, their buddies, mates........their brothers.

My great grandfather was in the 82nd. Pilot of his C-47 was named Thompson, friend of Cap. Vandivort. Watching this video is special because (according to the story) my great grandfather would have been with Meehan in that plan, however, he was switched the last minute and was in Thompson’s plane. A fateful switch

As a 70 year old, it still brings tears to my eyes and a massive lump in my throat whenever I see the sacrifice that these Men made to bring us piece. As a Brit I have visited Normandy many times, and you really have to visit any of the war grave sites to get a true understanding. Its such a powerful and emotional feeling to walk and read the Names and ages of these young Men who gave up their futures so we could live ours. The allies were the real heroes in this war, they left their homes, families, friends, and countries to bring to an end the evil that was the then Germany. " Many gave some, some gave all"

I went to France, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Germany not all at once but when i became a paratrooper in the early 80s i used to take military hops backb to the places where it all started. I also went to where the 82nd INFANTRY made their bones in WW1. This was before any movies made any unit"famous" per say. 90% of the monuments weren't up or even thought about. Except in Normandy. They made such an impression in me. Every year they had such a reunion. What movies really don't show you are the friendships the soldiers made with the locals. It was truly captivating. Since you're there in this video let me take the time to thank all the wonderful people in Normandy and in France for welcoming the soldiers into your lives and treating them with such honor, respect and love. In 1987 or 1988 i noticed the Germans started coming in numbers to meet their former adversaries with a handshake and a smile. So many men were able to heal so many scars when they came together now as friends. I'm lucky to have witnessed so much of that.

Thank you for sharing. The willing sacrifices of so many to keep this world safe from evil must not fade into the past. The account of their experiences must be passed on to each new generation. I understand that you can only learn so much about a particular point in history during school before you have to move on to another, and that is where we fail miserably. So many in todays fast paced society will never learn of the story you just told. That’s a shame. Again thank you for your sacrifices and time away from your family to bring these forgotten incidents of WW2 back to light. These men did not die in vain.

That area almost looks like it's only been a few years rather then 77 years since the C-47 crashed. Its amazing to see it in the condition that its in. There must be small areas of scared land like that scattered all over Europe where aircraft and other vehicles burned. My son and I have been to The Gettysburg Museum of History many times. What an amazing place with very unique exhibits well worth the visit. The foot stool from Hitler's bunker was eerie. My son purchased some Civil War relics from the museum, mainly bullets and various clips, fasteners, and hooks and a book recommended for collectors to identify the various bullets used in the war. He's hooked on military archeology and loved this video. Well done.

I’ve been researching on WW2 for several years and can only say that this channel ranks amongst the best of what’s on the subject on KZbin. The videos distill the stories and present just the right angles with the shots and commentary in unison...there is enough here to make any American proud of the valour and honour of its servicemen. One suggestion - a collaboration with Mark Felton may bring the best of your storytelling technique and historical research together. I’m not an American but I believe that what your country achieved starting 1942 all the way till the end of the space shuttle program in 2011 really brought humanity to a better place. I truly hope this great country unites again and the experiment of democracy doesn’t fail in the face of challenges born in recent decades.

Both of my great-grandfathers served during WWII, one in the Royal Signal Corps and the other a US Marine in the Pacific. My paternal grandfather had an extensive military career and was a third generation Marine, he did a tour of Vietnam with them, and after his discharge he ended up in the Army as apart of the Air Calvary. Most of his time in the military post Vietnam was about 10 years with the 101st at Ft. Campbell. I'm proud to have this connection to the Screaming Eagles, as someone who's been a had a huge interest with WWII and the whole Easy Company story

Very sobering that someone’s cricket stayed intact after the crash and was found. Reminds me of a friend of mine that was killed when the Blackhawk he was riding in was hit by an RPG. When the melted hulk was examined, a denta stick was found remarkably intact. He used to always chew on those. Air crashes are weird like that.

This here my friend, this is what makes your channel so special. The content is of familiar origins, but you take a side story of it and along with research and occasionally special access. You make a video like this. That stirs the soul and weigh on the viewers heart. Thank you so much for you time, energy and passion in making your videos.

I just checked and something like 2,000 C-47’s were used and only about 20-30 or so were shot down on that morning. 1-2%. Odds were in your favor. Then you had the parachuting in. I don’t how many men were lost in the jump itself (at too high a plane speed for safety) immediately upon landing. Unreal courage of all of these folks

Least we not forget! And through your efforts we have been reminded of the sacrifices of these men who lost their lives. Many thanks to the efforts of locals and the land owner for providing access to the very spot. Without this access we truly could not of made the connection of the actual crash site. Once again your coverage is nothing less than outstanding!
