I've always been fascinated by armored cars, even in modern day they are very much still in use for multiple purposes.

You'd think a radio would be the first thing they'd account for and install in a recon vehicle.

The available vehicle short wave radio equipment, of the late 1920's and early 1930's, was cumbersome, required a lot of power and the range was only a few miles, due to the inherent deafness of the receivers employed. A further problem would be the vastly reduced performance of truncated short wave antenna system, mounted on such a small vehicle. Base station short wave antenna wires are normally many tens of metres in length, to achieve optimal transmission & reception performance. On an armoured car as small as this, we're looking at a truncated handrail antenna of drastically reduced performance.

You completely missed the context of inception of this vehicle. Original need was for lightly armored car for policing purposes and staff/courier vehicle. D-8 fitted that role perfectly and was used by nkvd for a long time.

the German Sdkfz.220 series only had 2 crew and a open turret (although had small armoured turret walls) and they did pretty well, typically if you're getting shot at you're doing it wrong, the later BA-64 still only had 2 crew but actually had 4x4 and ground clearance

Considering the posture of the men driving it in the video, it must have been miserable to operate. A recon vehicle with a means of calling back to base makes sense but the lack of a turret would be a killer.

Well, AK 47 is cheaper than M16 but mostly use in many wars.
@Klovaneer
@Klovaneer 11 ай бұрын
That's a myth - soviets used to basically gift AKs left and right but in terms of cost in manhours and raw material it was on par with M16. Furthermore AK receiver needs a serious setup for steel stamping while AR15 is relatively easy aluminium machining you can actually do in a shed. If you compare mid-2010 military contracts for AK-74M and M4A1 they come out at the same price in hard green dollars.

Nightmare to operate for the commander/gunner. The spade grips of the front DT will smash you in the face when moving, or the rear DT will open your the back of your skull. Clearly a dual coffin.

That is such a stupid comment, you're questioning an entire country's war participation based on one very early armored vehicle design. Did you even watch the video or know about anything other countries made during that time? This thing was one of the first armored vehicles the USSR ever built and it is pretty much on par with a lot of vehicles other countries built at the time, since no one really knew how to properly design armored vehicles in general since they were a new concept. You should look at what the French, Italians and British made around the same time with concepts such as tankettes (Italian CV.33 or the British Carden-Lloyds). Additionally, this thing was made a decade before the German Invasion and even in the video they said that it's highly unlikely that they participated in the war, since by that time they were outdated and the Soviets also had much better designs as they improved and learned in the ten or so years since that vehicle was made until the beginning of the war for the country.
Why no Allied StuGs?
