Nobody like Marín Mazzie, Lupon lacks of the necessary emotion, but she fullfills the task.

I know the song is, but when did Patti do Ragtime? I didn't think she had... I assume this is from some concert, I was curious which one and when.

Wasn’t this written for her? When was this?

Written for musical Ragtime

@@PS-DLMA I know but apparently she was the person the writers initially wanted to play mother in Ragtime.

Interesting. She's too syncopated with her delivery. It loses all meaning. Marin Mazzie owns this song.

I don't think that means what you think it means - she's doing an extremely straight, on the beat delivery. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syncopation

Interesting. Well, she's singing it loud, but she's not singing it with any understanding of the words.

I understand what you mean. She is keeping a very strict time and it does seem like she is just keeping time rather than feeling the song. She's amazing, but this is not my favorite rendition of the song. Marin definitely owned it and I have heard other actresses really nail it. (Particularly when I did the show in Boston.) This feels too measured.

There are different styles of performance. Sometimes people will emote and try to make you feel what they character is feeling. But thats not always what people are trying to do. Some styles of performance call for no emoting, because if they audience is just experiencing the story from the point of view of the character they don't really have the room to think about what is actually being presented to them. Take Brecht's V-effect for example. What I get from this style is that she is trying to draw your focus to the text, to what is being said, not the emotion it draws up in the character. This gives the audience a chance to understand where she is coming from but also to take a step back and see this character as she presents herself to the rest of the world. Hence the staccato delivery.

Compared to so many other lovely versions...terrible. She just has too many affectations and my objection to her has always been this vocal laziness....like some lyrics matter and some don't. For the first half of the song, she might as well be reading real estate listings. No feeling.

I'm not a Patti LuPone fan to begin with, but this is pretty cringe inducing. Not only is she performing it in almost a sing-speak style, but she's putting no feeling behind any of the lyrics. It feel like she's rushing through it. I've heard poetry readings that had more feeling than what she did here.
