Soil Fertility Test of a Back to Eden garden analyzed by Penn State University.
In June 2021, I decided to do a soil fertility test and organic matter test for Back to Eden Garden that has been no-till, regenerative organic, for over a decade. I gathered soil from 13 locations throughout my garden and mailed a cup of soil to Penn State University. In less than 2 weeks I received the results in the mail. I was blown away by the remarkable results.
SOIL NUTRIENT LEVELS
Phosphate: 252 lb/A
Potash: 499 lb/A
Magnesium: 837 lb/A
Calcium: 10518 lb/A
Soil pH: 6.8
SOIL ORGANIC MATTER
38.8%
This is the first and only time I have ever had my soil fertility tested.
I share more of my gardening tips and mistakes to avoid in the Back to Eden Gardening Summit.

Grass clippings, leaves, straw will not do it like wood chips.

I'd love to see the results of a soil test of the ground NEXT to the garden. That would be (approximately) what was there prior to the wood chips being added on the grass when the BTE garden plot was first started

It would be interesting to do a microscope analysis from a certified Soil Food Web lab to get those numbers as well. This will give you the soil to bacteria ratio and the numbers of microorganisms. To confirm that would be optimal.

Hi Mark, thank you for sharing these results! Im curious, in the second lab results shown (minute 4:50) do you know what the acidity reading in the "exchangeable cations" section means, as I also see a pH of 6.8 listed in same table. I ask b/c I wonder how much you select for wood chip types (hard/softwood, acidic/basic…) and whether or not you feel that impacts the soil pH. Thank you!

I use the wood chips that are delivered to me. If there is a lot of cedar I will be sure they don't all end up in the same area of the garden because cedar breaks down slowly. Wood species does not seem to effect acidity! Yeah!

How deep is the soil?

Did they check for Trace minerals? It takes 13 trace minerals to produce the max yield. The soil test, did it tell what is available to the plant. Or just what is in the soil ?
