I suspect having his Great Great Grandma played by the same actress was just so they could do the "waking up" joke one more time...but if you want an in world explanation, you could just say the McFly men have a type...😊 If you look carefully in the 2nd movie, rich Biff is watching a Clint Eastwood movie where Eastwood does the exact same thing with a makeshift bulletproof vest.

The "Maggie McFly looking like Marty's Mom" thing was explained in the FAQ of at least the first trilogy DVD set, which is basically what @trolleyfan and @stargazer1682 are saying here: Q: Lea Thompson plays Maggie McFly, Marty's great-great-grandmother, as well as Lorraine, Marty's Mom. But Lorraine's family name is "Baines." Why did Lea play Marty's paternal great-great-grandmother, when she's really not part of that family? Is there something kinky going on in the history of the McFly family? A: Lea plays Maggie because we didn't want to make a Part III without having Lea in it, especially in a "Mom is that you?" scene! Of course, we thought about whether it made any sense; obviously, Maggie McFly and Lorraine Baines cannot be blood relatives. But we did come up with a satisfactory answer. It's a well-known adage that "men are attracted to women who remind them of their mothers." Clearly then, when Seamus married Maggie, that insured that the McFly men would have a genetic trait that attracted them to women who bear a resemblance to Maggie or Lea Thompson (even Jennifer is the same physical type!).

30:37 The first horseless carriage was invented in 1769 and ran on steam, it was the precursor to the train and the modern automobile; and steam-powered horseless carriages were present right up to and through the 1794 invention of the Internal Combustion Engine, with the first commercial engine patented in 1823. Unique Horseless carriages continued to appear, usually built by individual engineers, up till Bentley patented his specialized horseless carriage in January of 1886. Though not commonly present due to a lack of filling stations, from 1823 till 1894, when the first steering-wheel was invented, horseless carriages were a curio but were not some unheard-of fantasy dream. Once the steering wheel came along people suddenly just wanted to drive, and Ford's assembly line made it possible for the average person to own or rent a car within just a few years. Also, foot races and running just to run were things people did from the dawn of humanity up to and through the old west. Fred Bonine was considered the fastest man alive in 1885. Jogging was unheard of, running as exercise, but running for fun is as human as cooking over a fire. This movie is ridiculously ridiculous, but it is fun.

You two cuties just earned yourselves the first place on my list of people reacting to “Back To The Future”. You didn’t waste one single minute, the only pause was probably the editing … and that shows how much you liked this trilogy (THE trilogy). I told you it will wrap up like no other movie you’ve seen. I don’t know if you noticed in your uncut reaction, but when Marty came back rolling the DeLorean on the rail track, a sign could be seen saying “Eastwood Ravine”. In the first one there is also something similar - when Marty came back a few minutes earlier to save Doc, the sign near the parking lot said “Lone Pine Mall” (not Twin Pines Mall). You girls made my day - THANK YOU! I hope you watched those two short clips I mentioned in my previous comment and I hope you liked them. Salutations from Romania …

People always wonder why didnt Doc with Clara on the hoverboard get to the Deloreon to catch up with Marty. Well Doc on the hoverboard cant catch up with Marty .... the hoverboard cant go over 80mph. I dont think it can even go 20mph. So there is no way he could have got in the time machine and got in the car with Marty. There was no time for that anyway. At that point is was more about saving Clara's life.

Same reason they don't work on water, "unless you've got power". That type of hoverboard had no propulsion of its own and therefore wouldn't have been able to keep up with something going 88 mph, barring Doc or Clara holding onto the train and pulling themselves to the Delorean before they reached the edge of the ravine.

"Your future hasn't been written yet. Your future is whatever you make it." - Doc Brown Legendary trilogy of films. Something to bake your noodle. We see about eight different timelines as we follow Marty. It couid be argued that there are over twenty different timelines but some "fade away" as they change history such as what's seen with the picture Marty has of his siblings, a couple of newspapers, the tombstone, the You're Fired fax... In 1995 there are four of the Delorean Time Machines from different timelines there at the same time. Marty's first trip back, Future Biff's trip back, Marty's second trip back and the one hidden in the old mine from 1885. Time travel is brain melting but Back to the Future keeps it together so well that you're just having an amazing adventure.

Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis co-own the rights to the movie franchise and are adamant that it never be remade or another sequel done; especially co-writer and director Bob Zemeckis. He has been adamant that as long as he and Bob Gale are alive it will never happen. Purportedly, Bob Gale even has it in his will that his estate is to not allow it to happen, but that's anecdotal at best.

The reason why the great grandparents look similar is because in real life DNA has a tendency to recycle itself through your family's lineage... Grandchildren often take on the looks and characteristics of grandparents... and over time through the generations, certain parts of DNA will pop up and reassert its dominance... for example facial structures, eye color, skin tone, even hair color, whether the child grows bald when their older... DNA recycles over time... I admit using the same actors is kind of silly, but the director was just trying to show how a grandson or son can look very similar to a grandparent or great grandparents from the past. They used the same actors to make it a little more fun, but it's based on real DNA evidence. Love your channel. Keep it up...

Remember, when we had to wait years in between films it gave us the chance to think about the earlier film(s), rewatch them, fall in love with them even more. Then when a new one arrived it was not just a movie, it was an event. Sometimes I wonder if consuming entire trilogies or series in a short time really robs modern viewers of that experience, and does not allow the deep fandom and love we grew to have for these types of movies.

I agree in general, although possibly the absolute hardcore fans will always be hardcore no matter how they watch them. But perhaps it also explains why we (older people) also "hate" certain sequels more than recent viewers. The let down was more impactful when a sequel didn't live up to the hype built over years.

It is a little weird that Marty's great-great-grandmother on his father's side of the family look identical to his present day mom. The two possible explanations are either that his family is a bit inbred, or that the men in the McFly family are attracted to a certain type of women, and thus both Marty's dad and his great-great-grandfather ended up marrying women that were similar looking, but unrelated.

About the McFlys in 1885: Hill Valley is a small town. A Baines... No the McFlys moved here from Ireland. William McFly, the baby, must have grown up and then had an illegitimate child who was a "bane" on the family honor, and given that name: "Baines", and that kid grew up in Hill Valley and then had a brood of their own, and then the son of that son would be Lorraine's father. But now Marty can see that. So... um... It's meant to be cute, but it's really, REALLY weird if you actually think about it. The second and third movies are totally unnecessary sequels. The third one makes the first movie unlikely to transpire, it really makes it unlikely that George McFly would be a weenie, and his family would probably be one of the most prominent in town; and they beat Mad Dog Tannen who got arrested, totally changing the course of history, so Biff would never have been a problem, to begin with, so the second movie could also never have taken place. It really destroys the whole series, logic-wise, but it's fun.

Mad Dog could have had a child before being arrested. Or, he broke out and had one later. Seamus was a rural farmer, so he wouldn't have been too prominent, I wouldn't think. 🤔 And, I figured the McFly and Baines family tree looks like a dual phase sine wave. 😂

43:47 Before Marty went to rescue Doc in 1885, in his original timeline, Doc saved Clara simply by picking her up from the train station. When Marty went back, Doc got distracted and didn't pick up Clara. She's actually in the background when Marty and Doc are talking to the conductor. So she had to rent the horse and buggy as she had done before, and the horse got spooked as it had when she had originally gone over the ravine. With Marty, Doc dramatically saved her. Either way, they fell in love- only with Marty there, Doc didn't get shot and killed, etc. You guys didn't notice that Clayton Ravine became Eastwood Ravine with Marty going off the ravine. As for Marty looking like Seamus, originally, Seamus was supposed to be played by Crispin Glover, but he didn't film parts 2 or 3- so Michael J Fox took over. There's a whole story about Glover's likeness being used in Part 2 and him suing so that no other producer can do that again. As for Jennifer, Elizabeth Shue became an even bigger star than Claudia Wells and is STILL beautiful today. Yes, Claudia Wells was even more beautiful as a kid. I hope you guys do the Karate Kid series, Shue is Part 1 of that and that franchise has become part of modern culture with 6 seasons of Cobra Kai

I can't recall, but I think because Doc was the only person available to pick Clara up at the time, she didn't lose control of the horse and fall into the ravine. Had he not been gone to the past she would have died. Glover had the audacity to ask for more money since he and the other secondary cast had a huge part in making the first film a success, but the producers didn't want to pay. The producers tried to make audiences think Crispin was still in the second film, which is wehat the law suit was about. With the advent of advanced CGI, long dead actors will populate future movies, meaning studios won't have to pay popular actors at all.

There's 3 timelines here. 1 - Clara falls in the ravine = Clayton Ravine, Marty lived it. The timeline of the ending of the second movie. 2 - Doc exist in 1885, and PICKS UP Clara like he was supposed to do, without Marty, also the Doc's tombstone = The letter Marty received in 1955, no more Clayton Ravine already, but we don't know the Ravine name in this 2nd timeline. 3 - Marty arrives in 1885, Doc forgets to pick up Clara, so she was alone with the carriage and horses, Doc saves her. No Clayton Ravine in this timeline, but now it's Eastwood Ravine. This is the timeline 1985 existing at the end.

@@regaubade8329 It is a little paradoxical. For sure we have: 1. The first Delorean, that Marty accidentally traveled back in 2. The one Old Biff arrives in from 2015 3. The one Doc and Marty arrive in from Hell Valley 1985 Now, there is a fourth iteration of the Delorean, buried in the mine, put there by Doc after being stranded in 1885 - _but,_ it doesn't exist there until the Delorean is struck by lightning; which has the effect of placing the Delorean in the mine in the past and being there contiguously for 70 years, overlapping those other moments with multiple time vehicles. So there is a point in the past where there were 4 Deloreans, but not from our point of reference as the view in-tune with the Doc and Marty retrieving the almanac, because it doesn't happen until _after_ we've passed that moment in time. It's like the Western Union worker. Was he already on the road to Marty's location before Doc got hit by lightning? Probably not. It's not predestination that Doc gets sent back to 1885. That was a change to history and the ripple effect retroactively put the Western Union guy on the road in the past after the lightning strike happened.

The McFlys, Tannens, and principals could have arguably (barely) repeated appearances in their descendants. There's no intergenerational line of Lorraines. And no reason these Lorraines would always marry a McFly. It's a known weak point that's allowed so Lea Thompson can appear in each movie. It's not about time travel, but about the director wondering if he could meet his father in high school, and dealing with the consequences of that meeting. Time travel is just a plot device to get characters where the director wanted to tell his story. You can find other time inconsistencies and the answer is Ray Bradbury on plot inconsistencies: A few years back, one dreadful boy ran up to me and said, “Mr. Bradbury?” “Yes?” I said. “That book of yours, The Martian Chronicles?” he said. “Yes,” I said. “On page 92 where you have the moons of Mars rising in the east?” “Yeah,” I said. “Nah,” he said. So I hit him. I’ll be damned if I’ll be bullied by bright children. In my stories the time machine can operate in space so Doc takes Clara, Jules, and Vern to the Apollo landing site so they can look at the Earth.

I think that the reality shift should have made Doc and Marty forget Clayton Ravine, because they had the photo of the reality with Doc Brown in the past. 23:10 According to the Bobs, Bufford Tannen shot Doc Brown this day at the festival. Doc Brown took two days to actually die. Such horror. I'm glad Marty was honest with Jennifer about at not being a dream. Needles apparently took him off the hook. Although I wish Marty had revved the engine but stayed put -- and spinning around was utterly superfluous.

Doc 100% would have drained the gas tank before burying the Delorean for 70 years; that stuff breaks down over time; and can even gunk up the works if there's anything still in the fuel line, etc. Anyone who has ever stored or winterized a car for even just a few months knows this; and I would expect a scientist/engineer of Doc's caliber to understand this as well. The fact he had been in 1885 for the better part of a year before writing the letter would mean the gas could have started going bad already; never mind 70 years.

You're right, his great-great-great grandmother on his dad's side of the family wouldn't really look like his mom (since his mom comes from another family). But they didn't imply she's related, they just thought it was funny to use the same actress, just to have the same funny scene when a woman (his mom in the first two movies, and his great-great grandma on this) tend to him when he wakes up. His great-great-grandfather however, could very well look like him (he could be where Marty inherited his looks from).

There was a Back to the Future cartoon series in the early/mid 90s that featured all of the main characters traveling around through time, using both the train and a rebuilt Delorean. In fact, Christopher Lloyd did live action intros and outros for the show, with the stipulation that they had to be science based; usually involving some kind of Mr. Wizard-esque experiment that kids could do at home and spark an interest in science. The one I still keenly remember, in the episode they ended up stranded somewhere in the past and needed electricity and they realized they were in a lemon grove and used hundreds of lemons fed into the Delorean to generate the power they needed. Live action Doc then demonstrated the real world science of making a lemon battery. I don't think I ever got around to actually making one, but as a kid I was obsessed with the idea of a lemon battery for the longest time after that episode.

In 2015, Marty was pursued by Biff's grandson, _Griff._ He didn't have access to a skateboard, but he discovered its technological _descendant;_ a device called the _hoverboard,_ which he was then able to use to outwit _him._ But this is 1885. There are _no_ hoverboards, skateboards, or _pavement,_ and Marty is being pursued by Biff's great _grandfather,_ _Buford._ He needs _help._ 13:17 And here it is.

In the bar the can that fell on Biff was a spittoon. These were containers left around the place so people could spit there chewing tobacco into. Chewing tobacco was packaged like a chocolate bar, (compressed tobacco leaves I suppose), then you bit a piece off and chewed it, I guess to release the nicotine, and after a while spat the dregs out either on the ground or into a spittoon if you were indoors. Also there would have been two time machines in the 1800's. The one Doc put in the mine and the one Marty used to get there. (ohh, plot hole). So when Marty arrived the other time machine would still be in the abandoned mine where Doc mothballed it. Also it's a bit suss that Doc couldn't have synthesised some fuel close to gasoline from plants or alcohol, rather than randomly pouring liquor into the car. You can even boil oil down to gasoline. (in fact they would dump naturally occurring gasoline into rivers because there was not large scale use for it before the automobile.) Glad you were so invested in the films, they are fun...
@LarryLeeder

The two time machines co-existed only briefly, just as all the other characters' paradoxes. Once Marty took the one back to 1985, all the loose ends clean up.

Doc said they couldn't disturb the other DeLorean because it needed to be intact for 1955 Doc to repair. No plot hole. I also found it weird that Doc couldn't synthesize fuel. He only needed a small batch.

When it comes to Clara, there are three timelines: First is the original, Clara is not picked up at the train station, dies in the ravine, and it's named Clayton Ravine. In the second one, Doc goes back to 1885, picks her up from the train station (falls in love), she does not die, and the ravine is named Shonash Ravine. The third is when Marty ends up. The ravine is named Eastwood Ravine.

3:27 - How could he be commended in 2015 if he's in the past? That version of the Doc was FROM 2015; that newspaper headline had already been written; he had already been commended before accompanying Marty to 1955, then zapped back to 1885. Edit: ...Wait. Wait, no I'm wrong. 2015 Doc stayed then. Marty went back 1985 and everything was supposed to be fixed, but he didn't know about Biff's messing with the timeline. He ended up in Biff's 1985, which was all wrong. He found 1985 Doc, who helped him back to 1955 to fix things, then he got zapped with lightning. That was 1985 Doc that got zapped! So you're right; that Doc never got a chance to live his life from 1985 to 2015. That whole future timeline has been erased in that moment. I've gotta re-watch this whole trilogy now, and sort through which Doc is which! Meh. Time travel is wild. Don't think about it too much; it'll fry your brain circuits.

The funny thing all Marty would have to do is tell doc about everything and he wouldn’t have to go back to the west just tell him about the sports almanac and tell his other self not to buy it. Plus a plot hole in time traveling is traveling to the future… if you travel to the future that means your future self wouldn’t exist anymore cause you’ve taken yourself out of the original timeline.
