Very nice job on your latest hutch. Great idea on the hinged divider. It makes your cages much more flexible.
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
Pidasian Hippie I love that divider! I'm going to make another for the other top cage and possibly one more in Kinley's cage. She'll be so happy....NOT! Thanks, April!

Great job Mel. I haven't had a bunch of bunnies in a long time. I only have one that belongs to my grandson. What I used to do for the water bottles is take a clothes hanger and bend the wire so it would hold the water bottles in place. You can make several wire holders with one hanger :) Just an idea....
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
She Wolf Thanks for the idea! That's a great idea. Did you have problems getting the water bottle off to fill it?
@LadySheWolfWitch9 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Just bend the wire into a U shape so it will fit around the bottle and then bend a small U shape in each end so it will hook onto the cage. They make the wire hooks for some of the bottles you see at the store but its easy to make your own and they last forever. I love the job you did on the cages. Great idea putting that inner door on there. I love it.
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
She Wolf Thanks, Wolfy! I'll give it a try! I have one more inner door to make. It has been the best thing I've come up with. After I make it, it's time to clean the cages!

Sometimes I have seen other rabbit owners put a solid shield on the bucks cages. Apparently they like to spray. FYI! Janice

jksatte Thanks, Janice. Yeah, I noticed Dustin liked to do that! Nasty things, boys...... I'll put something up between them when the time comes.

What about winter with these hutches?
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
Sher Thom My biggest problem is summer. Wool rabbits get so hot! Can you imagine wearing a coat that is 7 times warmer that sheep's wool all summer?! In winter they'll be fine. If it goes below freezing, I'll throw a tarp over each hutch condo. They'll be better off than me! If I see that one is colder than the rest, I can always put them in a cage in the greenhouse with a couple more bunnies.
@sherthom56729 жыл бұрын
Geez, and you have Georgia summers to boot. I can just see you building some type of rabbit air conditioning later this summer.
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
Sher Thom The only room that has A/C is my bedroom. I refuse to have 11 more 'domestics' in my house! LOL! They love their frozen bottles. The babies aren't as hot as the adults but they love to roll them around their hutches and make as much noise as possible!
@lizspencer6059 жыл бұрын
One Woman & Two Acres I have an angora rabbit on the back porch and I live in Texas. I freeze bottles too, but I also keep a box fan attached to the side of the cage that blows all the time and will shave him once it gets over 85. (should have done it last weekend but I was busy doing a cut out on a bee hive) If you have a box fan, try that too. It really helps George!
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
I'll have to work on a box fan for them. The problem is it's outside with no cover for the electrical appliance! I hate the idea of clipping all their wool off but I know I'll have to. I was thinking of growing grape vines over the hutches and above the walkway between them. That would create a lot of shade and have something cooling growing around them.
@heatherinparis9 жыл бұрын
Great job Mel....those hutches are wonderful. As far as the shirt tags....I don't tuck them in I cut them off! Those bunnies that are not "woolers"?? Can they be made into dinners after growing a bit more?
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
Heather Smedley I need to cut those stupid tags off! The non-woolers are really too small to make a meal, even for me. They're already 4 months and the largest weighs 4 pounds!

Hey Mel, you don't need help, it seems to me. The way you hoist the OSB up on those crates like that. You have a great positive, can-do attitude. Bravooo! Nice looking final product...lucky bunnies. :)
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
sunnyside30 The help would be appreciated but I can usually find something around to assist me. I love these new hutches. The prototypes fall short of being very good. They're roomy though so my rabbits and bunnies are all very comfy!
@kendire61359 жыл бұрын
Mel, I have a concern. The chicken wire on the back of the rabbit hutches. A raccoon can definitely rip through that. I would consider putting hardware cloth over that. I believe you have mink as well in your area as well, veracious devils.
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
Ken Dire Thanks, Ken! I didn't have any more hardware cloth and can't afford to even think about getting more. The racoons and 'possums don't dare come around. Nnyus, my bigger dog, is very protective of the property when it comes to the larger vermin. I haven't seen any mink or heard of anyone complaining about them. I certainly hope they stay away. My little dog would have a field day chasing and killing one of them!
@angelaangell85239 жыл бұрын
So you are raising rabbits only for hair to make knitting? Or when you cull them you will use them as meat rabbits? I was wondering because seems costly in feed unless you plan on eating some or selling a lot of skein after you make it.
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
Angela Angell They really aren't big enough for anything but a snack! I'll be selling the culls. They'll make wonderful pets. Most are calm and easy going. I've come up with an idea for the wool that would be even more cost effective than selling by the ounce. I'll keep you updated as soon as I have my first 'creation'!
@HoneyHollowHomestead9 жыл бұрын
I was feeling your pain when you were handling that "plywoodish" thingy. :D If you have any paint lying around, you might want to paint it. That stuff doesn't like moisture much. :( Just what you need, I male yelling at you! LOL!
@angelaangell85239 жыл бұрын
MotherOfManyHorses Yea I was thinking that, too. She should've painted it before putting it up there cuz rain will make it swell up.
@HoneyHollowHomestead9 жыл бұрын
Angela Angell She can still paint it while it's up, if she has any paint. It's not the end of the world if she doesn't. She has a nice over hang on that roof that will help to keep rain away.
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
MotherOfManyHorses You know, I was going to paint it before I put it up but just couldn't wait that long to get the darn thing up! One of the bunnies had found a way through the tarp and down on the open hutches below! I'm going to paint the exterior and then use the hinged dividers to move bunnies around and paint each individual cage. Hmmm... I wonder when I'll be doing that? LOL! And you are so right about another guy yelling at me! I thought I'd finally gotten rid of all my boy pest problems!!! ROFL!
@OneWomanAndTwoAcres9 жыл бұрын
MotherOfManyHorses Thanks, Angela. I really do need to do it but it's not on my 'high priority' list. I'm sure I'll get around to it one day.
